Here are the last 3 blocks in my quilt guild's Block of the Month. These blocks make up the bottom row of the pattern, Jeni Baker's Half Square Triangle Sampler: Now I need to choose a background. I wanted to go with a colored fabric, rather than the white as shown in the pattern, and I thought I had found the perfect green: I put the first 9 blocks against the green background and lived with it for a while as I made the last 3 blocks. I began to think that although the green was a perfect match, it was overpowering the blocks. These blocks are only 6 inches, so the background has a bigger impact. I went back to the drawing board and found a lighter, less saturated green and tried again: It's a subtle difference, but I think the second choice helps the blocks stand out a little more. Here are the two fabrics side by side: And here are the 12 finished blocks, with the darker green background under the top 6 and the lighter green background under the bottom 6: This has been a lot of fun seeing how much variety can be achieved with just 16 Half Square Triangle blocks.

The calendar says it’s January, but the temperature thinks we’re in the southern hemisphere. It was over 60 F here yesterday and today – not bad for Southern Ontario!! In fact, a couple of crocuses were blooming in our front garden. They are in for a big shock though as the temperatures are supposed to plummet at the beginning of the week. I’ve been working away on my Poinsettias de Noel and this is what it looks like now. That big area in the middle is going to have a pot of poinsettias in it. I cut them all out last night and will start to get them assembled hopefully tomorrow. There will be red sashing between the blocks and a black floral border – at least there will be when I get it done! I took a break from it today to get some charity quilts quilted. I managed to get 3 of them done and the binding sewn on, all ready to be hand stitched on Tuesday at our Cuddle Quilt Day. While I was in my longarm room, I took a look at all my tops waiting to be quilted. I must do something about that. If the backs would magically piece themselves they would get quilted a whole lot faster. Lee and I were talking about making a bucket list of quilts. We all have quilts that we want to make, but somehow something else comes along and some quilts always get put on the back burner. As I was looking through some of my pictures today, I came across this one. It’s called Circle of Hope and I ‘think’ I got the pattern from Keepsake a couple of years ago. It wouldn’t be difficult, so I need to JUST DO IT!! Another quilt on my bucket list is a Hunter’s Star. It’s not like I want to make a New York Beauty (although that would be nice too) so I need to get busy and start crossing things off my Quilting Bucket list – the list that I haven’t made yet The Golden Globes are on tonight and Jon Bon Jovi has been nominated in the Original Song category with “Not Running Anymore”. He’s up against some tough competition with Adele in the category. I like them both, so as long as one of them wins, I’ll be happy! I’m afraid I’ve had to put a verification code on my comments as I have been getting so much spam and it’s really annoying. It makes you wonder – do they really get any business from all those spam comment links?

The end of the year is coming fast, so I have been evaluating my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts to determine which I want to finish and which I want to carry into next year. One of the RSC quilts I have been working on is the simple color block quilt made with 2.5" squares. For October, I made a couple brown blocks. I knew I needed some red blocks - so I went ahead and finished up three from squares that I had already cut and were in my stash. A couple of yellow blocks were needed too. At this point, I knew I was pretty close to having enough blocks to finish the quilt. When I moved the blocks from my quilting studio to my sewing room, I knew I needed more green blocks so I went ahead and made a few of them. So here is what I have so far. I still need to sew up two more blocks and adjust the layout a bit. I think I need another dark blue and maybe a pink. Hmmm.....What do you think? ********************************************* It is now your turn to share what you are making with scraps. I remember seeing a quilt by Kaffe Fassett where the sunlight shines through the fabric to give it a stained glass effect.
I KNOW I'M NO BETTER THAN ANYONE... BUT I'LL BE DAMNED IF THERE IS ANYONE BETTER THAN ME.
I made a Colorwash of exclusively Kaffe Fassett fabrics many of which are early and out of print. It is not the Kaffe Collective which includes fabric by Brandon Mably and Philip Jacobs. It is exclusively Kaffe. This wallhanging is made from the kit of 2.5" squares that will be offered to students of Colorwash 360. I used one of the larger prints on the back and I thought the black Fern print was perfect for the binding. Are you interested in making a Colorwash wallhanging too? If you haven't heard, I have an Online Course launching on October 1, 2018 called 'COLORWASH 360'. You'll learn gradation from light to dark (value) as well as gradation from one color another...And, how to select fabrics that work best. 'COLORWASH 360' opens for pre-sale on September 1. Subscribers will receive 24 hours early access to sign up for the course and purchase the limited edition kits of pre-cut squares or larger blocks to cut multiple squares yourself. Both Batik and Kaffe Fassett Fabric kits will be available in limited quantities to students of COLORWASH 360 only. If you aren't an Exuberant Color subscriber for the mailing list....click here to subscribe.

I'm happy to share two projects I designed that are featured in Stitch Magazine, Summer 2013. You will find it on news stands now! The first is my set of Petal Nesting bowls. Each individual petal and the bottom of the bowl is machine stitched. The individual petals and the base of the bowl are hand stitched together. It is a great project to take on the go! The bowls sit on my work table and are the perfect place to put small sewing notions. They would also be lovely on a dressing table for displaying your jewelry. I used Denyse Schmidt's newest Shelburne Falls collection. I love this collection! The theme of the issue inspired me to design this maxi dress. I love maxi dresses for summer time because they are so easy to wear - I love to feel dressed up and comfortable at the same time : ) This dress would be equally as lovely without the front ruffle! The flower is removeable and would be a fun embellishment on a hand bag! In celebration of these projects I am hosting a give-away! Brenda at Pink Castle Fabrics has generously donated a FQ set of the Maple colorway of DS Shelburne Falls. Please leave a comment below and I will pick a winner on Saturday. The give-away will be open until Friday 11:59 pm. PST. Good luck!!!
