The front of this approximately 17 X 46 1/2 inch patchwork table runner quilt is pieced using multi- colored 2 X 5-inch rectangles and 2-inch cream and/or white tonal and "low volume" background squares. All the little squares and rectangles make this quilt a unique "Vintage" look patchwork quilt. This IS a vintage pattern that I had printed out or copied from the '70's! I lost track of how many different vintage and new fabrics were used in this quilt. it is reminiscent to me of projects of the past! I did cut multiple strip segments of most of the fabrics. They were collected over a period of several years. Most of the prints are 100% cotton, but some of the vintage prints may be poly blend fabrics. I used a variety of cream or off-white tone on tone and muslin background prints alternated with the rainbow of prints to make this "Basket Weave" quilt. A friend of mine had made a small version pattern as a lap quilt and I was inspired to make this version which is different from the original in some ways. I quilted this quilt on my long arm machine using an all over design called "Laurie's Whirlpools" which features swirly swirls and arcs. I chose a multi-colored paisley print quilt backing fabric and the double fold binding. The binding was hand stitched to the back for a smooth finish. I used cream quilting thread for the front and "Royalty" purple thread for the quilt back and Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 quilt batting. Machine wash & dry on gentle cycles in large capacity appliances or line dry. I would suggest the use of "Color Catchers" JIC any fabrics want to bleed out since they have mostly NOT been prewashed and dried. Please note: The cost of shipping has been factored into the price of this item. Most of the cost of this quilt is in the hours of labor it took to stitch it! I use Priority mail for speedy delivery and will provide you with a tracking number and usually ship the next day after your purchase. So happy with how this quilt turned out. All the quilt top fabrics are from my stash. "Low Volume" has been a trend over the last few years. I've made a couple of quilts with low volume backgrounds but never a whole quilt till now. Karen quilted this one too and the texture is lovely. I love this very sweet fabric I used for the backing: "Just Another Walk in the Woods" designed by Stacy Iest Hsu. I have enough left to back the "Clambake" cot quilt I'm making at the moment.
Catching up here on quilts finished this year. I started collecting low volume fabrics a few years ago needing a break from all the bright fabrics and the calm was welcome. Turns out I had A LOT of low volume fabric as I finished this queen size quilt and still had plenty to make at least two more quilts. Earlier this year when I was looking for meditative quarantine sewing, I started making these partial seam blocks using Red Pepper Quilts Bright Hope block tutorial. I ended up with over 250 5 inch blocks, plenty for two good sized lap quilts. Finished with my favorite backing fabric, all over stipple quilting and hand sewn binding. These washed up beautifully soft and crinkly. Gifted to two important women in our family and a gift of quilt making therapy for me. Keep smiling, Kathy
I'm so happy to share this free, simple pattern today for a I Spy quilt with low volume fabrics. This is one of my favorite quilts ever! I wanted to make a low volume quilt, but with a little more zing than just simple squares. Don't get me wrong, I love simple squares, and they work great for this I spy quilt pattern. But for this I wanted an element that brought a bit of order to the craziness of 304 different prints. (I actually do have a few repeats, but you get the point.) I love the touch of the little solid triangles on each corner, and I tried to match them to their low volume squares individually. (By the way, if you're wondering what "low volume" means, there's a definition in this post.) Free Printable Version of "I Spy Quilt with Low Volume Fabrics" pattern Fabric requirements: (304) 5" low volume squares (304) 1.75" solid squares 5/8 yd binding fabric 5 yds backing fabric Start by sewing corner triangles. Mark a diagonal line across a solid 1.75" square and place it in the top right corner of a LV 5" square. Sew along the line, trim away 1/4" from the sewn line, and press out. Do this 304 times! I love this kind of repetitive, therapeutic sewing, especially when each square is something fun and new to look at! Sew the squares into rows of 16 blocks (19 rows total). Press row seams alternately, sew rows together, and press. Baste, quilt, and bind as you like! Maker Valley has quilt kits that come with 5" strips, perfect to subcut for this project. Holly is the queen of funky, spunky fabrics! These are sweet and simple low volumes. I really like these colorful ones, they've got come cute birdies and boats. Not all of these are low volume, but there are some fantastic "I Spy" fabrics in there, already cut! When I say "I Spy", I just mean anything fun little thing that's fun for kids to spot. Anything from critters and creatures, to foods and places, to cartoon and literary characters. This is a favorite section of mine, with the little Paris scene, the tea party, precious neighborhood, and Peter Pan characters. For my quilt, I started with a pack from Maker Valley, added lots of my own fabrics that I've collected over the years, and then my sweet friend @sewsabrina offered to send some when she saw what I was up to. So kind! She said she wanted to help the quilt reach it's full potential, and boy did she ever do that! I died over the fun prints she sent. I sent her some of mine in return, but they weren't nearly as cool to be honest. I do have lots of squares in mine that aren't necessarily "I Spy", they're just a calm low volume print meant to cool down the crazy! Here's a dog pile of little boys who have loved looking at this quilt since I first started putting blocks on the wall. There are so many fun little details to find! It's a fun kind of memory quilt for me too, as it uses almost every low volume I've ever put in other quilts. I had mine quilted by @emileehathaway in this cheerful bubbly design. I don't know the name of it, but I know she got it through intelligentquilting.com. I love the little soft puffy pillows that each circle creates. I knew this would be a heavily used kid quilt, so I had her put minky on the back since they love that. I bound it in Kona Bonsai from my local quilt shop, but they ship too! And they have every Kona, which is awesome. "Especially for you" is especially for my boys. It's hard to describe the delight of this quilt in photos and words. It's just so squishy, and interesting to look at up close, and colorful! We all love it so much. If you're wondering about QUILT LABELS, I got my personalized woven labels here. The one pictured here is a Tasha Noel label (and looks like those are on sale!), and I also have some of these cute labels. All kept in my Caboodle, which I love so much! I also have this bigger Caboodle, which I keep buttons and other knick knacks in. For this post, it was my first time using my new updated version of Electric Quilt 8 to make the mockups. I love it so much! I've used 7 for years, but it wasn't the best when I switched to a Mac. This new version runs like a dream, has amazing color options, and is really easy to use. Why work on just one queen size quilt when you can work on two at the same time? Thanks so much for all the love here and on IG for the Modern Fans Quilt (post here and here). Indeed I loved making that quilt (but then I can't remember the last quilt I didn't enjoy making) but all the new components of that project required focus. Making this Trip Around the World quilt was like therapy. Everything about it was lovely, calming and relaxing. Even though it is the biggest quilt I've ever made (just a few inches larger than the Modern Fans) I was a little sad to have it finished. The pattern is of course the tutorial by Quiltville. This is the second quilt I've finished using that pattern (the first is here) so I was familiar with the technique. Digging into my stash for low volume fabrics with a gray leaning created a colossal mess in the sewing room but was quite rewarding. That is, until I realized that even with the fabric requirements of a queen size quilt I was barely making an impact on my low volume stash! See my 2019 goal post for more on that challenge! Calculating the number of blocks I would need for a queen, I cut over 400 strips of some of my favorite fabric. Over a month or so I would sew up 10 blocks at a time and unpick the seams (see the tutorial as to why this is done) while relaxing at night watching TV. And soon enough, there were 72 beautiful blocks. Keeping with the therapeutic nature of this project, I just placed them on my design wall and didn't stress too much about the adjacencies of each block. This picture is the layout in process with my not quite queen size design wall. Table basting to save the back and knees!! Ah then the quilting. Over several days I quilted a leafy pattern completely covering the quilt. The flowing, repetitive movement of the leaves was so enjoyable to quilt and it adds a lovely softness to all those little blocks. Several hours of hand sewing the binding later, the quilt was finished. At least I know the quilt went to a good home and I can visit it whenever I want! My son and daughter in law loved the quilt and we had fun photographing it on a gray Christmas Eve outside their lovely antique home. Let's talk about the backing. It's Charley Harper Birch organic Western Birds and the best part is that it was a wide backing piece that I had in my stash! It takes a lot of hands to hold a queen size quilt up. Those birds are almost sitting on the leaves in the quilting. Sorry about all the pictures but I do love this quilt!! Although I had plans to finish three bed size quilts for my three sons for Christmas, I ran out of gas and gave one son an I.O.U. in the form of fabric selected for his quilt.
