Micrographia is a writing disorder. It is often seen with persons who have Parkinson’s Disease. This writing packet includes writing exercises and information on how to implement the Amplified Air Writing (AAW) Program for helping to reduce the small print, reduced horizontal alignment, and spacing difficulties that occur in micrographia. Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a type of movement disorder that can affect the ability to perform common, daily activities. It is a chronic and progressive disease, meaning that the symptoms become worse over time. It is characterized by its most common of motor symptoms—tremors (a form of rhythmic shaking), stiffness or rigidity of the muscles, and slowness of movement (called bradykinesia). In PD, certain nerve cells (neurons) in the brain gradually break down or die. Many of the symptoms are due to a loss of neurons that produce a chemical messenger in your brain called dopamine. When dopamine levels decrease, it causes abnormal brain activity, leading to symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. People with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), may begin to write words so close together that they become difficult to read. Also, their writing of letters and words may become small in size and writing may begin to move away from horizontal to a vertical angle. All of these changes in writing skills can be signs of a disorder called micrographia. In the scientifically proven Lee Silverman (LSVT) BIG® and LOUD® treatment programs, patients participate in repetitive exercises that are high in intensity, increase in complexity, and ultimately help to improve motor dexterity. These treatments target the neural degeneration that Parkinson’s Disease (PD) patients experience. The neural degeneration in PD can cause a deficiency in the ability for these patients to regulate their speed and ability to make big movements. This can lead to a lessoning of various physical motor movements and muscular actions that control speech and body movements. Similar to LSVT BIG® & LSVT LOUD®, patients whom have participated in an exaggerated arm movement treatment program, prior to engaging in a writing tasks, have been shown to improve micrographia writing symptoms. During Amplified Air Writing (AAW), the patient can either stand or sit up straight in a chair and is asked to move his/her dominant writing hand with large strokes. The big air writing of sentences, letters and numbers is done with an extended arm (without a bend at the elbow) and a large item to hold such as; a remote control or cooking utensil. For two weeks they are asked to complete 4 writing tasks, 3 times a piece and twice daily. We invite you to take a look at the preview of this resource and to purchase it at our low introductory posting price in order to start helping to reduce micrographia in your patients or yourself today!
