One of our learning objectives is studying Lines and the Elements of Art. I wanted a simple line project that incorporated many different types of lines while also reinforcing landscapes, the othe…
Last week, I posted about line drawings that my kindergarten students made with oil pastels and watercolor paints. To finish these off, my students glued paper strip lines (folded to make zig zags, curled and pleated) to the bottom of the page. The students reinforced their learning of types of lines and were introduced to paper manipulation techniques. Then, we rolled and stapled them at the top and bottom to create a hanging windsock. A little bit of double stick … Read more... →
The idea for this lesson came from an image I saw on Pinterest.. but after doing some investigative work - seems to have originated from the blog Art. Paper. Scissors. Glue and before that from the 1991 book written by Sara Beggs, "The No Nonsense Guide to Teaching Art." For this lesson we began by taking about what symmetry is and the difference between linear symmetry (1 line of symmetry) and radial symmetry (more than 1 line of symmetry). Then we talked about what a sculpture is (a piece of artwork you can see from all sides - it is 3-dimensional) and what a relief "sculpture" is (a piece of artwork that has depth on the surface but is not meant to be seen from all sides). Once students understood the principles behind radial symmetry and sculpture we began creating our very own radial paper relief sculptures! Students started by folding a piece of 12"x12" black construction paper diagonally both ways and vertical and horizontally (to create an 'X' crease and a '+' crease). Making these creases makes creating a radial design SO much easier because it gives you guidelines to work with. Once their papers had been folded and their names written, we sat them aside. Before having students begin folding their colored paper (each piece was cut to 3" x 3") to fill the inside of their design, I demonstrated 4 folds to them to get them started. *Students were allowed to deviate from these folds if they wanted to. To download the handout below, click on the arrow button in the top right corner (this will open it in a new window). You can download from there. My kids absolutely LOVED this project! They are already super into origami, so this project was like heaven to them! :) You might also be interested in checking out my Paper Poinsettia Sculpture lesson which uses the same basic concepts. What happens when a great book, creative task cards and engaging doodle notes combine? A Doodle and Do resource, of course! This Doodle and Do resource is designed for students to complete after reading the novel, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. It combines fun task cards with doodle notes. The task cards require students to write, chat, swap, and draw in response to questions about the book. Then, students add their responses to fun doodle notes for the novel. This resource will have your students evaluating the text, connecting to the novel, summarizing critical elements in the book, and working creatively and collaboratively every step of the way! About the task cards: There are four different types of task cards in this resource (12 cards in all). The task cards are super unique because they encourage students to respond and react to the text in really creative ways. When students pick the “WRITE” task cards, they respond in writing on their Doodle Notes. The “CHAT” task cards encourage discussions before students jot down the conversation highlights on their Doodle Notes. Of course, there’s a set of “DRAW” task cards! Students will create doodles and sketches on their notes in response to the draw cards. And…just to make things super fun and engaging, there’s a set of “SWAP” cards. When students pick a swap card, they’ll switch their Doodle Notes with a classmate and respond to the task card on one another’s papers! The creative task cards are not only fun, they also require students to truly reflect on the novel in meaningful ways! About the doodle notes: Just the format of Doodle Notes makes learning instantly more engaging! This resource includes 2 pages of Doodle Notes. The notes are filled with shapes and doodle sketches where students will add their responses to the task card questions. Students will write in lockers and on a chalkboard, add discussion highlights in thought bubbles, and doodle in fun shapes. The end result is a set of Doodle Notes that are not only fun to look at, but filled with students’ understandings of the book! How to use this resource: The coolest part about this resource is that it’s super versatile. There are many ways to incorporate the task cards and Doodle Notes into your classroom… WHOLE CLASS: Just copy a single set of the task cards and have students work as class to respond to each task card on their Doodle Notes one task card at a time. SMALL GROUPS: Divide students into small groups and let them work together to progress through each of the task cards while they complete their Doodle Notes. LEARNING STATIONS: Set up learning stations for each type of task card. Then, have students rotate around the classroom as they fulfill the tasks at each station. Included in this Doodle and Do resource: • Teacher Overview • Teaching Ideas – Detailed instructions for 3 teaching options • How to Complete the Doodle Notes • Student Directions for the Task Cards and Doodle Notes • 4 Learning Station Cards (in case you choose to do learning stations in your classroom) • 12 Task Cards for the novel (3 chat cards, 3 write cards, 3 draw cards, 3 swap cards) • 2 pages of Doodle Notes Other Doodle and Do Resources… Figurative Language Unit - Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Hyperbole, Onomatopoeia, Alliteration Doodle and Do Reading Skills bundle! - Making Inferences, Finding the Main Idea, Fact & Opinion, Sequencing, and Summarizing 5 Nonfiction Text Structure Mini-Units - Problem/Solution, Compare and Contrast, Descriptive, Chronological Order, and Cause and Effect How to Study for a Test Doodle Notes and 5 Learning Stations Writing Responses with Text-Based Evidence Doodle Notes and 5 Learning Stations Poet and Poem Study - Maya Angelou You may also like: File Folder Book Project - Any book! The past few years, I have received numerous emails about how to make the monster Alien head and the 3-d lizard head. Today I took some pictures to show the steps of how to create the head. It is very simple and can be done with 2nd -5th successfully. When making the monster, add eyes, ears, horns, antennae, teeth, tails, legs, spots, the possibilities are endless! This is also the same head for the Easter bunny puppet. There is a link to those lessons below. Monster Alien Lesson 3-d Lizards/ Chameleons You will need a piece of tag board/card stock about 8 1/2 by 11 for the monster a little bit smaller piece for the lizard. Fold in half cut in half and fold the tops down along the side edge Then cut off the bottom and discard. The top pieces should be perfect squares Fold the squares diagonal the other way, so that you see an "X" Cut one side of the "X" and stop in the middle glue those sides together to make two tiny pyramids tape them together evenly on the back And now Go to TOWN turning it into some kind of creative creature!! We have been doing so many things in art and I have just not had time to post lately. If you would like to see more detailed directions, or step by steps of these lessons, please leave a comment. I LOVE hearing your feedback and knowing what you like to see on the blog so I can post more about those things....I haven't heard from you in a while. Fifth graders are working on a grid creating self portraits Some classes are creating free form paper mache sculptures We are painting them tomorrow! WOOHOO! Since the end of the school year is nearing, some grades are finishing up their larger scale projects and doing one day projects for fun. This city project is SUPER fun and simple. I actually get an APPLAUSE when I open the paper to reveal the print!! This works best on regular zerox copy paper. First look at images of city skylines and talk about the shapes of the buildings, the sky and the reflections on the water. Then draw the city starting at the horizon line with trees, a road, and a bridge. Then draw the smallest buildings first so they can overlap the larger ones. They use a yellow crayon for the windows, stars, and fireworks, then color over them with marker to make a crayon resist when printed The you spray water on the WHITE part of the paper and fold to print Some fourth and fifth graders are finishing writing their names using two point perspective. This was a fun and chelenging lesson. I think they learned ALOT and have been using this technique in their free drawings for fun! They made HUGE frames with strips of large black paper and gold paint pens I was inspired by this post by the amazing Aly Marcotte at Artisan Des Arts, go check out her awesome blog!! http://artisandesarts.blogspot.com/2013/03/eye-study-grade-56.html kinder, 1st and 2nd grade made "Planet Power Pugs" For Earth Day! They turned out fabulous! We also did a Draw- A-Long Bull dog last week and each student gets to create a very unique background! If you would like me to post the steps and script to create these bull dogs, let me know and I will. I finally figured out perfect steps for %100 successful bull dog looking bull dogs! They are SO cute and a GREAT confidence builder for shy artists! Some of the first graders told me that their parents did not believe that they had actually drawn it!! So much fun! Many students used our Graffiti letters to write their dog names in the background and the two point perspective lesson to create backgrounds as well! I love seeing them apply what they have learned in open ended projects and free draw!

Like the Value Landscapes posted earlier this month, this lesson was inspired by Miriam at Arteascuola. However, these were "painted" with pixels on the computer rather than regular paintbrushes. Each year 4 student completed their own landscape in less than 10 minutes but still had valuable experience with using tone to create depth within a two dimensional artwork. After we observed and discussed the scenes created by Miriam's students the children took turns at making their own value landscape on the two available classroom computers while the rest of the class continued on with their set work. It was quick and easy but also meaningful for the children.
