These Breckon cufflinks in sterling silver feature an enamelled three-wave design, delicately hand-finished in our workshop in Orkney. This collection was designed by Sheila in 2008 for Roy Leask, Lerwick’s Guizer Jarl at Shetland’s world-famous fire festival, Up Helly Aa. Each year the Jarl portrays a Viking character from the sagas, and usually with some kind of link to their own family. With Roy’s daughter living in Orkney, he chose to be Kol Kalison who supervised the building of St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, Orkney’s main town.Sheila designed the piece to reflect the detail on the Up Helly Aa squad’s outfit, which was inspired by the wave design on a carved circular stone in St Magnus Chapel.

This is a sterling silver Scottish bar brooch, c.1930s, featuring a front view of a Viking ship. From the 8th to the 15th centuries Vikings and Norse settlers colonised parts of what is now the periphery of modern Scotland. Scandinavian-held territories included the Northern Isles of Orkney and Shetland, the Hebrides, the islands of the Firth of Clyde and associated mainland territories including Caithness and Sutherland - hence the recurring theme of Viking emblems in Scottish jewellery. The brooch measures 2 3/8" x 5/8" (6cm x 1.5cm) and fastens with a simple hook clasp. It is stamped "Silver" on the reverse - the silver on the reverse is darkening a little, I have left it as it is but if you would like it polished just let me know. An ideal gift for a male or female friend or a great addition to your own brooch collection! It will come in the little gift bag shown (colour of tartan ribbon may vary). SHIPPING This will be mailed 2nd Class Signed For in the UK and Tracked/Signed Airmail elsewhere. You'll find lots of other vintage Scottish items in my store: https://www.LuckenboothVintage.etsy.com

The Quendale Beast vintage Sterling Silver Brooch Viking Heritage Scotland Measure 2 cm diameter Fascinating history Tests completely as 925 Silver Buy with Confidence The Quendale Beast From the 8th to the 15th century, the Vikings occupied parts of Scotland including the Orkney and Shetland Isles The Vikings were big fans of adorning themselves with items made from gold, silver, and pewter so a large amount of Viking jewellery has been recovered from Scotland. In the far South of Shetland, in a place named Quendale, a partial bronze ornament was found. Made from bronze, it depicted the back end of a winged beast however the head was never discovered. Jack Rae, a silversmith from Shetland, was tasked with completing the design which we now know as the ‘Quendale Beast’. Complete with a long fiery tongue, it is the epitome of Viking folklore and design. The Quendale Beast is now a world recognised figure and is often crafted as pendants or brooches 🎀Thank you so much for looking🎀 Please don’t miss my other items in this shop: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/PoshGemz *Please note I don't add boxes it makes postage expensive (Unless it is a box that is bespoke to the item) Your items will come wrapped carefully and usually secured inside a sturdy Large Letter Box & posted as "Signed For" with a Royal Mail Tracking Number
