Shelly made this delicious quilt called Creamsicle, makes me think of hot summer day by the lake! The pattern is in the book Simple Color - Orange by Vanessa Christenson. Shelly is on a mission to use up her stash one colour at a time and this is the perfect pattern for orange. She asked for simple custom quilting and really wanted it quilted like it was in the book. I tried to convince her to let me quilt few feathers on there but nope, she is a modern gal so I did my best to make sure she was going to love it! I made a few changes to the quilting in the books sample to add my own touch to it! Here is a picture of the books version below. I changed out the cross hatching to echo quilting and added a double line in the petal. There are a lot of stops and starts to this style of quilting but so worth it! I used off white So Fine thread and the QP Curve 20" template for the curved quilting. I really want to make an orange quilt now, how about you?
Welcome to the fourth post of the Orange Peel Quilt-A-Long! The final linky party doesn't start until August 23, so you have plenty of time...
Is anyone else obsessed with the Orange Peel design right now? I have been dreaming of Orange Peel wall paper for my dining room, I just free motion quilted an Orange Peel design on my recently finished Scrappy Trip Around the World quilt (pictures coming soon) and I just started this Orange Peel mini quilt last week! I'm obsessed! Obsessed I tell ya! So when my boss at Just Sew asked me if I wanted to be in charge of the mini quilt of the month for August and she handed me the book 101 Fabulous Small Quilts by That Patchwork Place and I spied an Orange Peel quilt in it - I knew I just had to make it! I've always wanted to make one and this was the perfect opportunity. I decided to do a low-volume, scrappy background with bright fabrics for the leaves. I've been loving that combo for a while now so I'm pretty excited about finally doing it. (I had a little helper helping me plan my scrappiness. She's pretty cute, eh?) Because I'm on a deadline (this has to be appliqued, pieced, quilted and bound by the end of the month) I've set a goal to applique 8 leaves (or 1 row) every day. I figure each leaf takes about 10 minutes to applique so it's just over an hour out of my day that I'm dedicating to this project for the next week or so. I'm already half way done and I'm really loving seeing it come together! I've posted more pictures of this project on Instagram. Feel free to follow along if you'd like. My username is gigis_thimble. When I first posted about this project on IG, my friend Jodi Nelson of the blog, Pleasant Home showed some interest in the pattern so I roped her into making an Orange Peel quilt with me. Be sure to stop by her blog if you haven't already. She's posting about her Orange Peel quilt today too! We thought it would be fun to start an Orange Peel Quilt Along but after a little research we found out that Jessica from the blog, Quilty Habit has one going on as we speak! So Jodi and I are just going to sit back and enjoy the Orange Peel Quilt Along ride! We hope you'll join us! Jessica's got great pattern suggestions, applique tutorials, a schedule and there will even be some great prizes given away at the end! You can click HERE for all the details. Since someone on IG asked for it, I am going to do a tutorial on my favorite method of applique (the same method I'm using on this project). So be sure to check back next week if you're interested in that. So...Orange Peel - are you feelin' it? Yes or no? ~ Amber
There is nothing that wraps me in the seasonal warmth more than the enchanting aroma of orange slices drying, on their way to becoming yule decorations strung up around our home. This cherished solstice tradition has been a part of my family for as long as I can remember, but there's one little thing we need to talk about. Like the heel of a loaf of bread that arguably makes the best croutons or the savory bones from your roast chicken that create a hearty broth, I couldn't help but seek a higher purpose for those leftover end bits after cutting the perfect citrus slices for our holiday décor. Yes, I've tried hanging them up as they are, but let's be honest — capturing that golden glow of light shining through those wee stained glass windows is one of the best parts. This leads me to the main topic of today: crafting dried orange cap mushroom ornaments! These adorable, aromatic creations not only make use of every last scrap of fruit but also add a whimsical touch to your yule decorations. What could be better? First things first, before you set them out to dry using your preferred method, punch a decent-sized hole in the top. The stem usually provides an ideal spot for this! You can scrape them out to leave only the rind behind but I like to leave it as I find the segments dry to resemble mushroom gills! We then toss ours in the dehydrator for the day, but you can also use a low-temperature oven or even the natural warmth of the sun if you're in the right climate. Next up, you'll need some cinnamon sticks. Okay,

This is Sandra’s Cora Quilt and it is a pattern designed by Fabriculous Quilt Shop. I just love the large Ric Rac in the inner border, that really makes this quilt special. She purchased the pattern from Fabriculous, here is a link to their website. Sandra left the quilting design up to me and at first I thought I would do free hand swirl across it as she said this will be a dragger quilt for her granddaughter. But then changed my mind since the batting is Dream Puff and the backing is Minkie, I really wanted this to be a squishy soft quilt for a toddler to drag around, so more open quilting was the way to go. I decided on a large orange peel design since I had a perfect grid to work with and I also wanted to try more of my new Quilted Pineapple Templates. This time I tried the 10 inch template and I love how it turned out! I stitched in all the ditches and around the Ric Rac and then added a simple X in the outer squares for contrast.
