Today we're continuing with the theme of easy fall crafts. Couple of days ago I shared this really beautiful Sewn Leaf Art project that I made with my preschooler. Today I just wanted to share this gorgeous folded paper leaf banner. I came up with the idea after reading some fall-themed books with my son. Seeing all the beautiful colored leaves in the books made me miss the fall leaves back on the East coast. And then it hit me- why not make our own? Bring a bit of fall to our forever-summer state. And so, my son and I got to making and painting together. The results came out so beautiful that he insisted we hang the banner up in his room to spruce it up. Don't have time to paint leaves? Try this easy origami paper version instead! Materials Used: Thick paper (We used sketch paper instead of Watercolor Paper because it was easier to fold and hole punch.) Paint brushes Liquid Watercolors Plastic Tray Art Palettes Scissors Hole Puncher (We got our from Target and LOVE it.) Yarn Stapler Here's how we made our paper leaf banner! First, I cut out a bunch of 5 1/2" x 7" rectangles. Then, I took my rectangle and folded it in half, then in half, then in half again (along the length.) (This way I had lines to guide my accordion folds later.) Then, I punched a hole in one end. Then, I unfolded most of my folds until my paper was only folded in half. I cut a slanted line on one side (right in the image above) to give the general shape of a leaf. (The leaf's point is in the middle of the paper.) Once I had this general shape down. I cut out several different types of designs on my slanted side to make various leaves that looked realistic when refolded. Then, I open up my paper and accordion folded the paper along my pre-folded lines. I stapled the folds together. I opened up my accordion folds like a fan and pushed down on the leaf's edges to make sure they stay opened. I ended up with some really lovely and modern leaves. (Apologies if my directions seem rather intense. But I promise that once you make one leaf, you'll become a leaf making factory and churn out a whole bunch more.) Then, we grabbed your watercolor paints and painted away! At first we we looked at some photos of fall leaves and choose fall-themed colors. But then my son requested blue and purple too because he really loves those colors. I made a whole bunch of leaves for us to paint, but it took him 1/2 an hour to just finish painting one! He was very set on painting both the front and back and all the folded nooks and crannies. So while he worked on his leaf, I just splashed the rest with beautiful, vibrant colors. (Don't you just looove the pigmentation of Liquid Watercolors. Really, gorgeous.) Once our paint dried, I tied the leaves to a 3 long strands of yarn. And that's it! I really, really love how this activity turned out. I hope you enjoy trying it out with your children too! I'll bet it would make a wonderful play date or classroom art activity. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to remind myself that it's fall. (I'm just not used to warm temperatures at this time of year.) Chuck and I enjoyed doing fall crafts back in Jersey, so I thought we should try doing some fall crafts here too... even though it doesn't quite feel fall yet... During a nature walk, we counted quite a few red trees outside. Boy, was I surprised! So we drew inspiration from them and made these two-ingredient Homemade Puffy Paint Fall Leaves! This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support. Awhile back we had some success making gluten free homemade puffy paint. But I was feeling kind of lazy and didn't have all the right materials on hand. Luckily, we found a super easy recipe for puffy paint on several blogs, and tried it out. I'll bet you could easily make this puffy paint today. You probably have all the ingredients already at home. Here's what we did: First I cut out a leaf template from a cereal box. Then, I traced this template onto construction paper. Then, I cut our red leaves out. We made our homemade puffy paint by mixing equal parts of Elmer's Glue and Shaving Cream (the cheapest, white kind) and a couple of drops of food coloring. That's it! Then, we used old plastic spoons and popsicle sticks to spoon the mixture onto our leaves. For added pizzazz, we sprinkled on some sequins (because seriously- isn't fall a magical time of year?) We let our leaves dry overnight and poof! The glue/shaving cream mixture took on a lovely, spongy, puffy texture! Now it definitely feels a bit more fall-ish around here. :) Looking for other fun fall crafts? Then check out these great ideas from the other Creative Preschool Bloggers below! I miss our old home. But, slowly, slowly we're growing to love living on the West Coast. The sunny weather really can't be beat. Oh yeah, that and the flowers. When we moved here a month ago there were flowers EVERYWHERE. Lovely colorful blossoms greeted us from neighbors' yards, in front of super markets, along the highway, near bus stops.... it was so beautiful. I think that's what inspired me to create these duct tape daisy flower pens. They're bright and cheerful and make writing really fun. What happens when you have access to the internet, shortened daylight hours, a craft-and-math loving kid, and a deck of old playing cards? Well, if you're me... you rally everyone together to do a STEAM activity! Yeah! Tired of bouncing off the walls one night, our family tried our hands at making these nifty 3D Card Sculptures. They came out pretty cool and I thought I'd share them today with you! Let's Make Beautiful 3D Card Sculptures So I totally cannot take credit for the design of this project at all. I was in my crazed-mom-"gotta-find-something-to-do-with-the-kiddos-before-we-destroy-the-house" phase and I happened upon this awesome tutorial and template to make platonic solids from playing cards. Bingo. It was a life-saver. We just printed the templates out and used them cut slits into our playing cards. (Our playing cards were also smaller than the templates, so we just trimmed the template to match our cards.) Then, we slid the cards together using the slits. My son came up with this shape over here: And I made this particularly lovely octahedron. (Is it just me, or does this card sculpture make you swoon slightly? It's so pretty and I felt fairly accomplished after making it.) I hope that you have fun trying this activity out with your kids too. Looking for More Activities that Combine Math and Art? It contains quite a few simple projects that even beginners can do. Materials Needed: Computer Paper Scissors Markers How to Fold Balancing Origami 1. Cut out a strip of paper 1 1/2" x 11" (Along the length of your computer paper.) 2. Optional: Decorate one side of your paper now (Or you can decorate if once you've folded.) 3. Fold your paper in half lengthwise. (Decorated side out if you decorated it) 4. Open up your fold. Then, fold it in half again like a book (decorated side in) 5. Fold down the upper left corner of your paper to the middle line. Then, unfold it. (This will create a crease to help with the next squash fold.) 6. Then, fold your paper like this and squash it down! 7. Flip your paper over. Repeat steps 5 and 6 with the other side. 8. Rotate your origami so it looks like this. 9. Fold down your "wings" so they are behind the body. 10. Then, unfold your wings so they are back where they started. (This will create a crease to help with the final squash folds.) 11. Push down on the center of one "wing" and then fold it so the center crease becomes a valley fold. 12. Repeat for the other side. Your origami should look like this from the middle. 13. Fold down the flaps of your wings on both sides. (4x in total for both sides of each wing) And now... balance it! You got it! Did you know you can carve boats from soap? Last week during an impromptu playdate, we tried our hand at carving Ivory Soap Boats. This was such an affordable, easy and fun activity that kept two 3rd graders engaged for about 1/2 an hour! How to Carve Ivory Soap Boats with Kids How to Carve a Soap Boat: Unwrap a bar of Ivory Soap. The soap is so soft that you can use cutlery (spoons + knives) to carve the soap into the shape of a boat. I let both kids just go at it! Each child took a different approach to their design and it was neat seeing the two final results. Notes: Remind the children that once the soap is broken, it's hard to repair it! (One child went a bit bonkers on the carving and ended up breaking the front of their boat.) Soap shavings will get everywhere! If you don't want to make too much of a mess, have them carve over a bowl to catch it. (We just let the soap fly + then swept everything up + wiped everything down later. Once you're satisfied with your boat shape, try floating them in water afterward! And if you have extra soap, why not try carving something else from it? Like these cool soap ghosts or skulls?
