Creative Writer Worksheet – Writing Memoirs (PDF) This week’s worksheet is for the memoirists among us – those writers whose lives are their masterpiece. Or is that every one of us, after all? “How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live” – Henry David Thoreau.
I randomly came up with this idea during the last week of school. One of my reading groups had finished their book and project before any of the other groups had finished. Instead of giving them a new book (there was only one week left), I quickly created this template and told them to pick an event in history and research it. I had one boy choose the Vikings, someone else chose the atomic bomb, a girl wanted the great depression, and another student picked the Korean war. I loved that everyone had such diverse topics. After they got started, I saw some great learning take place in my classroom! Because it's an inquiry-based activity, they generated their own questions. And because they got to choose their own topic, they were excited and felt ownership over the project. I plan on using this next year as a fun fast finisher activity. This list is something I quickly generated. {I know it is not all inclusive - if I left something off that you really want me to add on, please leave me a comment.} This would be fun to hang up somewhere in the back of the classroom so fast finishers can work on a project whenever they want. I am leaving next week on an 8 day history trip to Virginia where I get to study at the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute! I also get to visit Jamestown and Yorktown. I'm so excited! I plan on posting lots of the things I learn, including pictures!

OK.... So.... some of us were talking one day... and I showed them how I was ready for my bat unit... Can I tell you?? a paper cutter is THE best investment (besides, of course the laminator)..and this is a cheapy one from Walmart (eek! don't tell on me that I went there one day..lol) Once I started cutting with this, the time I spent cutting out stuff was cut into THIRDS...lol... yes, we DO have paper cutters at work, but when I bring stuff home, print up and laminate at home, this is MUCH more convenient.... besides...ours at work are pretty dull...so I don't do my good stuff there... Anyway...back to the post... so, we haven't even SCRATCHED the surface with bats this week - it is TOTALLY going into next week... BUT, we did do some reading response activities. We did the "SWBSF" activity in my All About Bats unit... I NEVER knew about this until I started blogging... and OMGosh!! It. is. uh-ma-zing!!! so simple. yet so effective. click the pic to get a copy for your students! Then, I taught them how to take THAT information and make a paragraph.... It's a work-in progress... they have such a hard time with writing... So, everyday after lunch, I have to have my chocolate... it helps me to not binge on the junk food...ok?? ok. Anyway, so I ate TWO Dove candies... you know them.. the OH SO DELICIOUS chocolate?? uhhhhhhhh.....(envision Homer like drooling) lol... anyway, so I ate my TWO pieces... and they BOTH said the SAME thing!! Think someone is trying to tell me something?? Well, my friends... I AM going to do something for myself... I'm doing the MUD RUN this weekend!!! So excited!! Some girl friends and I are doing it - and my hubs is doing it too!! I'm totally going to kick his booty!! lol I totally will - he may be a man...and a firefighter...but I WILL beat him!! haha!! So tomorrow is a student holiday - teacher inservice day...my oh my, wouldn't I just LOVE to have an entire day to work in my room??? yeah. right.

For so many of us, our 20s are when life really gets rocking and rolling. We finish college, move out on our own, try to get a job (any job, seriously, just pay me, for God's sake), and take control of our own lives. Whether it's by choice or not,…
If you asked me 10 years ago after feasting at a trattoria in Florence on fiocchetti alle pere con salsa di taleggio e asparagi that one day I would be able to replicate the experience, I would have laughed in your face. Back then the only thing I knew how to make was frozen pizza. But time has a way of changing us, and that trip to Florence changed me too. Here I am 10 years later, recreating that meal of a lifetime.
