Welcome to our Teddy Bear Olympic Games! With the help of favourite bears we've been celebrating the Olympic Games, & been discovering different countries across the globe, new sports, & having lots of fun exploring this historic sporting event! Today we're exploring some of the nations taking part in the Olympics. Recently Minnie has shown a real interest in maps, & this coupled together with her enthusiasm for this years Olympics, inspired us to put the following together. We set up a selection of bears on a large world map & Minnie eagerly explored the different countries. We have friends & relatives dotted around the world & she's always keen to find where they live first. She soon had a bear sitting on each of her chosen countries & it didn't take long before the bears started to visit each other "for their holidays!" As you can see, my little explorer was keen to visit places too! This playful way of exploring a world map enabled us to discover where different countries are & their proximity to each other. As the teddy bears 'travelled' we also considered which form of transport they might use, & if the countries had hot/cold or similar climates to where we live. We then added flags to the countries she was familiar with, & positioned them with play dough. (To make the flags we simply printed off a selection from the computer, & attached them to lolly sticks using tape.) This was the first time Minnie had played with flags like this, & it amazed me just how quickly she was able to independently match the flags to the corresponding countries (something I hadn't considered she'd do). The flags also enabled us to explore patterns, shape & colour, & offered us an opportunity to spot the similarities between them. If you're looking to explore the countries further, how about tasting a traditional food or fruit, finding the national dress or the national anthem, or reading a traditional folktale originating from that Country. The bears soon had voices & an imaginative tale was being constructed around games & play! "Would you like to come to the Olympics?" asked one little bear... well, how they could they refuse! To start our Teddy Bear Olympic Games we needed an opening ceremony, so using our flags (along with some rubber bands wrapped around the bear's paws) each bear carried in their team's flag & paraded around the room Olympic Arena along to their national anthem (which we found on youtube!) We even had a torchbearer carrying the Olympic flame! Check out our Teddy Bear Olympics (Part 2) for sports & activities, all of which are perfect for preschoolers, & our DIY Olympic torch & winners medals.

Celebrate the Olympics with a Teddy Bear Olympic Games! Here are six fun activities based on popular Olympic sports, all of which are ideal for preschoolers! My girl was even inspired to create a few new sporting activities of her own! Discus First up was the DISCUS! To make these we used paper plates & decorated with paint dabbers/bingo markers. (We found using a single plate worked fairly well, but later taped two paper plates together which travelled much further.) A great activity for exploring gross motor skills, movement, & distance. Javelin Next up was the JAVELIN! To make our version we used a large sheet of newspaper rolled diagonally & taped around the middle. These could be decorated with pens, stickers, or wrapped in coloured paper/kitchen foil. The javelin was great for exploring another set of movements, & again measuring the distance travelled. Even the bears had a go! Hurdles After the javelin, we had the HURDLES! As you can see these were easy to construct with a few chairs & broom handles! Smaller children's chairs gave us a perfect height for younger children to climb/step over... or crawl under! Again we explored new movements, became more aware of space around us, & this time we timed how long it took to complete the activity. Oh, how much fun a stopwatch can bring, especially when your child is timing YOU to complete the activity! 100meters No Games would be complete without a RUNNING event. Here our teddy bears are all lined up waiting for the (almost) 100m race to start. Maybe piggyback races could be added to the Olympics?! Five bears made it to our finish line... the others got a little lost en route! This activity offered a whole new set of skills to explore, fine motor moves (as we attempted to tie the starting/finishing line), problem solving (as we created ways of transporting the different sized bears), gross motor moves (as we ran), & literacy (reading signs & recognising familiar words/letters). Basketball Our next sporting event was BASKETBALL! Ok, so it's not quite basketball as we know it, but here's our mini version of the sport, ideal for little arms. We used an old washing basket & a selection of different sized balls which we tried to get into the basket. We moved our starting line a few times to vary the distance the balls had to travel, which obviously made some attempts easier than others. This offered opportunities to predict & adapt our moves to reach the target which was perfect for encouraging hand-eye co-ordination. Soon we had Wellie Basketball! In the UK we have an alternative sport (mostly found at fetes & festivals) called 'Wellie Wanging', where the winner throws their wellies the furthest distance! And after the wellie boots... it was time for the bears to join in! A neat way to get children to tidy their toys too! Sailing Our final sport was SAILING! We made origami sailing boats with different coloured paper which we set sail (blew around) an old baby bath! (Any large container would be perfect for this.) We coloured the water with a little blue food colouring, & the boats were off! If you're looking for an alternative sailing activity, check out our upcycled sailing boats. This is a neat way to explore design, floating/sinking, & wind power. So there you have our super six mini Olympic Activities ideal for under 5's, & grown up kiddos too! Hope they bring you as much fun as we've had.

Welcome to part 2 of our Teddy Bear Olympic Games! We've had our opening ceremony, so now it's time for the games to begin! Here are six activities based on popular Olympic sports, all of which are ideal for preschoolers! My girl was even inspired to create a few new sporting activities of her own! Discus First up was the DISCUS! To make these we used paper plates & my little designer decorated each one using paint dabbers/bingo markers. (We found using a single plate worked fairly well, but later taped two paper plates together which travelled much further.) Before Minnie attempted our version of the discus, I showed her how the athletes threw them. She LOVED spinning around & throwing the plate discus, although initially it flew off in a completely different direction from the one we had planned! We tried again & this time measured the distance the discus travelled using a tape measure. She loved finding the measurements on the tape & shouting each number out, & we began to compare which distances were longer/shorter. A great activity for exploring gross motor skills, movement, & distance. Javelin Next up was the JAVELIN! To make our version we used a large sheet of newspaper rolled diagonally & taped around the middle. Minnie was keen to throw this across the garden asap so we didn't have time to decorate it, but these could easily be painted, adorned with stickers, or wrapped in coloured paper/kitchen foil. The javelin was great for exploring another set of movements, & again measuring the distance travelled. Even the bears had a go! Hurdles After the javelin, we had the HURDLES! As you can see these were easy to construct with a few chairs & broom handles! Using children's chairs gave us a perfect height for Minnie to climb/step over, & we still had enough room at the bottom for her to create a new game as she crawled underneath each one! Again we explored new movements, became more aware of space around us, & this time we timed how long it took to complete the activity. Oh, how much fun a stopwatch can bring, especially when your child is timing YOU completing the activity! 100meters No Games would be complete without a RUNNING event. Here our teddy bears are all lined up waiting for the (almost) 100m race to start. I guessed Minnie would run with the bears, but I never imagined they'd be transported like this! We used an old washing basket & a selection of different sized balls which we tried to get into the basket. We moved our starting line around to vary the distance the balls had to travel, which obviously made some attempts easier than others. This offered opportunities to predict & adapt our moves to reach the target which was perfect for encouraging hand-eye co-ordination, estimating, & controlling our motor moves. My girl got really hooked on this game & soon we had Wellie Basketball! In the UK we have an alternative sport (mostly found at fetes & festivals) called 'Wellie Wanging', where the winner throws their wellies the furthest distance! And after the wellie boots... it was time for the bears to join in! Loving this basket full of bears! What a neat way to get children to tidy their toys too! Sailing Our final sport was SAILING! We made origami sailing boats with different coloured paper which we set sail (blew around) in our old baby bath! (Any large container, or bathtub would be perfect for this.) We coloured the water with a little blue food colouring, & the boats were off! If you're looking for a simple, easy to follow demo for origami boats try this one, or if you're looking for an alternative sailing activity, check out our upcycled sailing boats. This is a neat way to explore design, floating/sinking, & wind power. So there you have our six mini Olympic Activities ideal for under 5's, & grown up kiddos too! We've had so much fun with our Teddy Bear Olympics, from discovering different countries to exploring a variety of sports, this theme has offered so many opportunities for play & learning. Our Teddy Bear Olympics wouldn't be complete though without an Olympic torch, so today we're sharing how we created two versions, one to play & parade with, & the other to decorate a wall or window. Our first Olympic torch is ideal for smaller hands to hold, & is sturdy enough to withstand the odd knock or two! To make the torch we used: Sequin Waste/Punchinella (we sourced ours from a local Scrapstore ) Yellow & Orange tissue paper Recycled empty yarn cone (alternatively use a rolled sheet of card & secure with tape) We started by covering the cone with glue & covering in strips of yellow tissue paper. We used the punchinealla to represent the perforated circles on this year's Olympic torch, & attached it to our cone with another layer of glue, securing the ends with tape. There are 8,000 circles on this year's torch which not only act as air vents, but also represent the 8,000 torchbearers who will carry the flame around the UK before it reaches London for the Opening Ceremony on 27th July. To make the flame we simply pushed a few strips of tissue paper into the end of the cone. And here's our Olympic Torch ready to be paraded around the garden & beyond!! Our second torch was super simple to put together & looks great on any wall. We cut a triangular length of card from a cardboard box, which Minnie decorated with punchinella & tissue paper. It was only later I realised the significance of the three sided card. Did you know the Olympic Games promotes three values; Respect, Excellence & Friendship? Such great values to share with children. Or how about using the three sides of the triangle to represent the Olympic moto "Faster, Higher, Stronger". With our torches completed it was time to make our medals. To make these we used: White card Gold, silver, & bronze crayons A hole punch Lengths of wool We drew around a cup to create our circles, then Minnie coloured each one in, cut them out & punched a hole in the top before threading the wool through. On the back of each medal I added 1st, 2nd, or 3rd to help Minnie understand what the gold, silver & bronze medals represented. We made a set of winners podiums using upturned baskets & added small cards by each with 1st, 2nd & 3rd to help her match the medals. Great for exploring numbers, sequencing, size, & colours. And here the winners are looking resplendent with their medals! These have been used again & again, & the medals are currently hanging by Minnie's bed! The torch has been paraded around the house & garden & we've been asked to stand & cheer as she races past with it. So much physical & creative play from some paper & card - just wonderful!
These Olympics activities are so much fun and are sure to teach your children many skills. Don't forget to grab all the printables; whether you are doing the winter games or summer games, I have you covered!
