I had only ever seen Burnt-tip Orchid (Orchis/Neotinea ustulata) on one occasion, in Kent about 30 years ago (since when it has changed its name from Orchis to Neotinea). My memory was of a small group of flowers about 8cm tall in tightly-grazed chalk downland. They may have even had cages over them to stop the rabbits nibbling, as rare orchids often do. I was told about a site in North Lincolnshire where this rare and declining species occurs so I visited and was surprised to see tall vegetation more than half a metre tall, with tall Burnt-tip Orchids (up to c30cm) growing among the tall grasses. The flower heads of some of these were taller than the entire plants I saw in Kent. This species is often quoted as one of the most rapidly declining plants in Britain, with losses largely due to agricultural "improvements". According to the recent "State of Nature" report, it has disappeared from 27 counties where it once occurred. The same report states that 97% of lowland meadows were lost in England and Wales between the 1930s and 1984, amounting to 64,000 square kilometers. The site in Lincolnshire was a small meadow of a couple of hectares among many square miles of intensive arable.
Lucy Churchill worked for over 25 years within the fine-craft stonecarving trade. Work included many prestigious public art projects, and private commemorative commissions.
Range of high-quality prints created from my calligraphy illustrations of quotes. The House With the Blue door drawings come from my love for the coast in Lincolnshire. I draw every day in my sketchbooks using watercolours and inks. My drawing style is unique. It’s very loose, sketchy and full of colour. I like people to look at my work and see something that brings back memories. I also do sometimes go on tour and paint other areas of the country. My style is really informed by my years of being a calligrapher as you can see in the sweeps of white and black ink on my paintings. The name The House with the Blue Door comes from the name of my historic chalet on the Humberston Fitties near Cleethorpes. These high-quality prints are available in four sizes – small (A5 21x15cm), medium (A4 21x30cm) and large (A3 30x42cm), as well as postcard print.
