This Car Track can be easily carried around. Isn't that handy when you are on the go or just need a break? The mat is a great substitute for an electronic “babysitter” gadget or a dismissive time-out. Engaging enough for hours of independent play. Successfully tested on my very active son and his friends for years! This playmat was officially featured by Etsy multiple times, was chosen as the title picture for the Christmas kids' gift guide, and proudly displays the "Etsy's pick" badge. Etsy, thank you! The Road Map play mat comes in two sizes and designs: 20x20" and a more compact 12x12" version. Made out of acrylic felt with cotton backing. When folded closes on a button. The road, houses, and trees are sewn onto the background and adorned by hand embroidery and buttons. Die-cast cars are included - 3 for the bigger and 2 for a smaller option. Photos are samples, not the actual item you'll get. A copy will be made by order and will look as close to the original as possible in a handmade item. Unless specified textiles and elements are chosen out of current availability and will match a sample as closely as possible. 🦊 *******************************************************🐊 Most items by Fox Majeure contain buttons, beads, and other small elements. I'm so excited to finally show you my fun sewing project from a few weeks ago! I have some sweet friends from college who recently adopted their first child from Ukraine. Their son is so adorable! I wanted to make him something special that he could use both now and in the future. I decided to try my hand at a toy car mat. I saw some on various blogs, but they all just had one straight stretch of road. I wanted my car mat to have a little more action, so here is what I camp up with: I'm not really sure why that picture is showing upside down. Anyway, you get the point. I found some cute car fabric at Joann Fabrics and got to work. This mat used a half yard of fabric for each piece. I cut the fabric on the factory fold, so you could potentially get two mats out of one half yard. I didn't even think to take pictures of the process because I don't use a pattern and make things up as I go along. Anyway, I used two pieces of fabric (inner and outer fabric), felt for the interfacing, and gray felt for the road. I drew a pattern of a road on a piece of paper and then cut it out of the gray felt. Then, I laid everything out and sewed it up! The mat has a velcro fastener to keep everything snug. I'm going to make another one soon for someone else who has ordered one, so I will be sure to take pictures again and write up a tutorial for you. I am still just beginning to sew, so if I can do it, anyone can do it! Here are some more pictures of the finished product: The cars in their homes... And on the track! The best part about it is the mat folds up so the cars can always stay with it! I think it would be great to use as a quiet toy to keep little ones occupied during meetings and other times where they don't need to be running around acting wild and crazy. I really hope that my friends' son likes his gift. Welcome home Artem!

...and opened, I can show you what I've been sewing and crafting. First, for Kade whose birthday is December 23rd. This play mat was inspired by several pictures that I found on Pinterest. I then took the best ideas from each and designed this play mat to be about the size of a standard placemat with pockets to hold 6 matchbox cars. For Ruth ~ This quilt pattern was originally drawn up by my husband. He wanted a quilt that reminded him of a Norwegian sweater pattern. It was a bit more complicated as it included many snowflakes. I simplified it to make a table topper quilt. It finished at about 32" square. I love the pretty snowflake fabric for the backing. For my SIL, Mike ~ For Rio ~ Sorry for the dark picture but the dark green yarn was difficult to photograph. The knitting pattern makes a nice 2-sided scarf. For my DD1's puppy, Ole: Isn't he adorable? A tug-o-war toy made from t-shirt yarn. For the home and ornaments: My DD3 had this decorating idea using vintage glass ornaments from my grandmother. She framed them in 2 of her vintage white framed. They hung above our fireplace. See them here. I made this mimi book ornament for my DD2 and SIL for their first Christmas as a married couple. This book is about 1 1/2" x 2". Part of the table decorations at their wedding was book art. One of my family traditions is to make and exchange Christmas ornaments. These little drums are made from the tops of aerosol containers...like hairspray, etc. Yarn wrapped glass ornaments...knitting needles made from wooden skewers and wooden beads. 3-D paper star - made from left over scrapbook paper cut into 1/4" strips - 4" long. Here is the tutorial for making this star. Well that's about all for now...I also did lots of Christmas baking of cookies and my cranberry coffee cake...and I received some very nice packages in the mail...I'll share another time.
I took a break from selling on Etsy for most of December to devote some time to personal craft projects and learning to use my Christmas ...

A portable car play kit for fun on the go.
I fell in love with the car cozi that Jill from homemade by jill made for So You Think You're Crafty challenge. I knew I had to make one for my 2 year old nephew. Between Jills tutorial and the tutorial from My Little Gems I was able to make my own version. I did a few things differently then the tutorials. First, I used a really heavy interfacing that made the road part of the cozi really stiff so it could hold itself up if there isn't a hard surface to put it on. Second, I decided to make my road windy instead of straight. I thought that just a straight road might get boring sooner. I used No Sew Heat-n-Bond to attach the road lines, number and car decorations on the backing. I had some leftover car fabric from the curtains that I made for my son's room that I cut up and appliquéd to the back of the cozi. I put the cars just on the top portion so when the cozi is rolled up that is the part that shows. I was able to make the entire thing from scraps that I had in my stash. I love being able to use up my stash!
Car playmats are the perfect present for any little guy. They can be made almost entirely from scraps of whatever you have. I used a mixture of felt and fabric. Felt can simply be cut out and sew straight on...yay for that. Fabric does need to be "appliqued" on. That process can be as simple or as hard as you have time/motivation for. I used the freezer paper method. Then I also just used a simple stitch around the edges. If you have the mad skills and the time you can do something like THIS ah-mazing creation over at Homemade by Jill. Your car mat can be as big or as small as you want. You can personalize buildings or favorite spots of your child. My process: I brainstormed what I wanted on my mat. I used a regular piece of fabric for the grass and a heavier upholstery fabric for the back. The roads were stenciled on with freezer paper and then painted on with permanent fabric paint. Like I said earlier the details were all done with a mixture of felt and fabric. It was a labor of love and it will take a couple of days, but it will be the highlight of any little man's Christmas. Some of my favorites: farmhouse with apple orchard police station park with swing set gas station with car wash Linking & Sharing at: We Did it Wednesday: Sew Much Ado Creative Share Wednesday: The Trendy Treehouse

The other day my little buddy was playing trains with a friend. We have a little train track, but it was clearly not big enough for the two of them to both have long trains on it. I started thinking, especially because we have carpet instead of wood floors, that a board could be a pretty good surface to play on. I came up with this. It's a 2 foot square 1/8" thick particle board that I simply drew some tracks on with a black sharpie, modge-podged a few stations, some trees, a water filling station, and coal mine onto. Oh, and don't forget the helicopter landing pad. I tried to use scrapbook paper (versus cardstock) as much as possible because it will be harder for it to come dislodged. I think he may still be a little young for it, but we'll see. He doesn't really like that the "tracks" don't have a groove for his wheels to go in. Maybe it will become my train track . . .
Finally, my secret project for the past couple of weeks. This supposed to be Christmas gift for my best friend's little boy, big ZZ, but I had a really hard time picking it out. They are moving overseas soon, I couldn't buy any toy too big, which will only make their move more difficult. Since we are best friends for years, I asked her directly, what kind of small toys or items she had in mind buying for her boy. She said nothing, which was not helping at all. Then we all got sick here in the house, one after another, lasted more than a month. Obviously, I was not in the creative mood. I did lots of searching online, finally got this great idea. Since big ZZ loves cars and trains, and he already got a train table, the best thing I can get him will be a car mat. Of course those big rugs are out of the question. I found some great inspirations in the blogworld. Yes, I am being honest here, I am not the first one thought of this. Erin from Decor Allure made this amazing play mat with Michael Miller's "Merryville" fabric. She also listed other options, since this fun fabric was discontinues. I loved it so much, but after unsuccessful search online and on Etsy, I gave up this idea. But that drawstring bag is a brilliant idea. Then I found this well designed tutorial at Fiscars Fun This Summer by Lisa. I love the idea making it with felt. I having making felt stuffs for a while, and still have a big piece of green felt left over from my Toddler Safe 2-D Christmas Tree project. But that size is just way to small for my plan. I wanted something much bigger, one that big ZZ can play with on the floor, or table. But I loved how she made the gas station and the car wash, and the fact this mat has car storage. I also found this simple tutorial about how to make a matchbox car caddy with fabric. So, this is what I came up with. A car mat made with felt, about 2ft by 3ft, has a school, a house with garage, a gas station with car wash, a small parking lot, bus and taxi stops, a pond with some trees, a roundabout, some one-way street, and pedestrain lines.Everything made of felt, lots of hand stitching, unexpectedly time consuming! I also found this wonderful fabric, lots of different cars, trucks, and airplanes, perfect for the backing of my mat. Then I made a matching car roll and drawstring bag with the same fabric. I even handstitched a little car and letter D (big ZZ's name) on the bag, even though I don't do embroidery at all. I just love the final result. More pictures can be found here on flickr. What I didn't expect was little caterpillar loves it too!? I have a plan for her play mat already, now it seems like I have to make another car mat for her. But she is a girl, and girls don't play with cars or trains. Well, if she likes it, I have no choice. I am too soft, want to do everything I can to make my girl happy. After I finished the whole project, I found this one from A Girl And A Glue Gun. Much more details than mine, but made with a hot glue gun. I probably will steal some of her ideas for my girl's version, but knowing my girl's tearing pulling abilities, I have to secure everything. Guess way lot handstitching is ahead of me.

Zip zoom surely describes the kind of weekend I had, but I do so love a productive weekend. My list of accomplishments includes: replacing a jacket zipper, cobbling together cotton batting to make a bigger piece of cotton batting, taking my car to get new windshield wipers since necessary rubber pieces froze to the windshield and came off (I could have done it myself but it's under warranty so why not let them?), ran a few errands, did some blog upkeep, dusted and cleaned the bedroom, knitted a little, and made the babycakes a little gift. Throw in a birthday dinner for my dad and that tops off a very busy weekend. One that I'm quite pleased with. First off--I pootled around on my blog to add some social media icons without having to resort to understanding extensive code or paying someone to help. I found a really helpful write-up that linked to a few helpful sites (click here) and voila--a few little tidbits that will make it easier for us to connect. If you click on each one you'll be able to send an email, see my Facebook page, Instagram feed, Pinterest boards, and sign up for my feed. I realized I would mention "Oh I have this now" and never really provided a way to connect outside of that post, so there they are now if anyone is interested. When I don't have much to write about I tend to post photos or share links or other tidbits there, just in case you start to miss me :) If you'd like to do the same for your blog it was really quite simple and took me maybe half an hour tops to do it. OK, enough of that. Last weekend I was avoiding doing something, I'm sure, and looking at fabric online. The A-train is madly in love with transportation--trains, planes, helicopters, motorcycles, etc., so when I saw a link to a playmat kit I immediately clicked. I saw the price and thought "Um, no" but did buy a little bit of yardage to make essentially the same thing for about a third of the price. Throw in a snowy afternoon, some tea, and some light curvy quilting and you've got a recipe for a playmat. I still possess way too many pairs of toe socks for any sane adult to have, but I still love them. Oh, and there's the playmat. I needed to add some quilting to this as there's batting in there, but I didn't want to override the cuteness of the print by throwing in too many stitches and making it too quilty. So I went for outlining the roads and that's it. The spacing is fine as per the batting instructions, and you don't really notice it, which is what I wanted. Can I just tell you that curvy quilting is not easy? There was so much quilt wrestling you would have thought this was a much more intricate design. My stitching is not marvelous in some areas, but for something to go on the floor I'm not really minding too much. It gave a really nifty look to the back-- I didn't want the quilting to be seen much on the back, either, and it's not. I thought that this could be flipped over and this could be the landing strip side for when they're landing helicopters and doing other important playtime tasks. I bound this with a plain black and white stripe as it reminded me of road signs, as well as the streets themselves. I opted again for a fun stitch for the binding. This one made me think of railroad tracks so I went with it (more for my own amusement than the baby's). I'm still loving putting on my bindings this way, so I'm going to keep at it. It makes the least enjoyable part of making a quilt (for me, anyway) much more fun. If this might tickle the fancy of someone you know, I got my fabrics from the Fat Quarter Shop (except the binding, which was in my stash). The main print is 'Zip Zoom Playmat Multi' and the back is 'Madrona Road Haystack in Graphite.' This was a great Saturday afternoon project, and quite satisfying. The nephew got quite a kick out of it, too. He'll probably be more interested when he's home, as opposed to in the middle of a crazy house where there are bookshelves to clear and soccer balls to roll around. I am quite tuckered after a long, busy day so I'm calling it a night. Have a good week! I'll be in meetings at work all week.
