This is a vintage coiled rope art basket crafted by Ruth Lescohier in the style of Native American tribes of "Nova Albion". The heavy, roped and coiled textile basket features rich tones of burgundy, olive, and tawny. A stone hang closes the hinged lid of the basket. 5th Place Winner of the 2020 Writer's Digest Poetry Contest and a Semi-finalist in the 2020 National Poetry Society of Virginia Poetry Contest The title Searching for Nova Albion comes from a pilgrimage Pamela Cranston, an Episcopal priest, once made to Drake's Beach near Point Reyes, California. There, in 1579, Sir Francis Drake landed the first English ship in North America, which he called Nova Albion (New Britain). The title poem is a protest against abuses of the environment and of power, wherever and whenever they happen. Inspired by the works of George Herbert, Gerard Manley Hopkins, R. S. Thomas, David Scott, and Rowan Williams, the author aspires to follow in their footsteps as a fellow poet-priest. Searching for Nova Albion displays a distinctive kind of spiritual sensibility found both within twentieth century English classical music and the Northern California landscape. These poems display a love for the roots and beauty of the English language, as well as an appreciation for the mystical, but also keep a critical eye to question, laugh with, or doubt Christian tradition. Common themes that arise are unexpected encounters with nature and the numinous; questions about life, death, and eternity; writing and finding one's voice; dealing with loss and defeat; and the recompense of joy.
Genuine Antique Map 1800 Maker: Thomas & Andrews Black and White Antique Map of North America, by Jedidiah Morse, published by Thomas & Andrews in 1800. Includes New Albion and Sir Francis Drake's Harbor in California. New Albion, also known as Nova Albion, was the name of all North America north of Mexico, from "sea to sea," claimed by Sir Francis Drake for England in 1579. The extent of New Albion and the location of Drake's port have long been debated by historians, with most believing that he came ashore in the Bay Area on the coast of northern California. Also includes the River of the West, an imaginary river that connects the east and west coasts (promoted by Thomas Jefferson). Quivira also appears on this map. Quivira was one of the Seven Cities of Gold that drove many people to search North America for these cities. The north of the continent has a coast, which hints at a passage from Hudson's Bay to Alaska although it was actually unknown at the time (other maps often left it blank, including maps published later). This map appeared in several editions of the Morse atlas. less

Old World Map 1630 This beautiful decorative world map by Henricus Hondius is one of the most famous map of the 17th Century, and shows the world as it was known at the time. In North America, New England appears as Nova Albion, California is shown an island, the Rio Grande incorrectly flows into the Sea of Cortez instead of the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi river is barely represented, and the Great Lakes are altogether missing. Korea, called Isthmus, is for the first time no longer represented as an island, while the Philippines appear as large land masses. New Zealand is missing while the Southern continent named 'Terra Australis Incognita' (Unknown Land of the South), shows an early appearance of Australia's coastline. Also depicted are the four elements, Fire, Air, Water and Earth. Interestingly, the four corners of the map are adorned with pictures of the famous Claudius Ptolemy, Gerard Mercator, and Julius Caesar, but also of Henricus's own father, the cartographer Jodocus Hondius. Our reproductions are carefully restored by hand, with care and respect for the original craftsmanship. We dedicate extensive time to repairing faded colors, mending any damages, to ensure that every detail is faithfully represented. When you acquire one of our pieces, you're getting more than just a printed copy - you're getting a revitalized historical treasure, meticulously brought back to its authentic form. This piece is printed and assembled in our downtown Los Angeles studio using our 12 color Canon Pro 4100 large format printer on Epson Exhibition Satin Canvas, a heavyweight 23 mil semi-gloss textured canvas that is enhanced with protective elastic polymers. Decorative wood, stained and varnished is added on the top and bottom, with two eye-hooks mounted on the top piece for hanging.
