The official Facebook page of Turkey's pro-government daily, Sabah, for example, is filled with praise for the destruction of the cathedral. Sadly, Islamic supremacism not only targets the churches of Western Christians. It targets Yazidi, Zoroastrian, Buddhist and Hindu temples too. These religious minorities in the Muslim world are completely vulnerable, defenseless and severely persecuted.... In many Muslim countries, Muslim-on-Muslim violence is also quite commonplace. The Islamic hatred of different religious groups is not about geography -- the East or the West. It is about religious faith. What is heartbreaking is that arson and other forms of desecration of churches have been going on in France and other countries on a regular basis, with barely a mention by the media or Western governments.

The path of Adel Kermiche, born in France to immigrant parents from Algeria, and one of the two men who murdered the elderly priest Father Jacques Hamel, looks like the path followed by many young French Muslims: school failure, delinquency, shift towards a growing hatred of France and the West, return to Islam, transition to radical Islam. The French education system does not teach young people to love France and the West. It teaches them instead that colonialism plundered many poor countries, that colonized people had to fight to free themselves, and that the fight is not over. It teaches them to hate France. All political parties, including the National Front, talk about the need to establish an "Islam of France". They never explain how, in the internet age, the "Islam of France" could be different from Islam as it is everywhere else. Many French Jews fleeing the country recalled an Islamic phrase in Arabic: "First the Saturday people, then the Sunday people." In other words, first Muslims attack Jews; then when the Jews are gone, they attack Christians. It is what we have been seeing throughout the Middle East.

Therese of Lisieux prayed before the statue for help in becoming a nun when she was otherwise too young. The church has been very popular for many people desiring bold victory by our Blessed Mother. The title was originally given to Mary by Pope Pius V after the Christian victory in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. It was an enormously important naval battle which stopped the Muslim advancement in the Mediterranean and turned the tide on expansion by the Ottoman Turks. The basilica was begun in 1629 by King Louis XIII, dedicated to his Catholic victory at La Rochelle. It wasn’t finished until 1740. Over the next century, the commercial aspects of Paris came to surround the church, and it had trouble existing as a parish. Then the cure, Charles-Éléonore Dufriche-Desgenettes, had a vision from the Blessed Mother. She said to dedicate the church to her Immaculate Heart and to found the Archconfraternity of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He did both, and immediately the parish went from having a dozen people at Mass to four hundred. The most useful and available key to someone's position lies in the expressions he is prepared to make his own. Language clearly reflects the bearings we have taken as well as it reveals how aware we are that we have taken them. The language he uses not only shows us where someone stands but also lets us in on the extent to which he understands where he stands. And if the expressions we are prepared to utter are so revealing about our position in the world, perhaps the language we use can also reveal some basic facts about the world itself--or the world as we most basically see it. Language would then prove a valuable key to that style of question long called metaphysical. This book is an attempt to follow out some of the clues that language gives us about the world, specifically those offered by a privileged set of expressions: analogous terms. David B.
