I {Kayla} teach a preschool class at my church on Wednesday nights and we recently did a lesson that I thought would be fun for any preschool classroom! Perfect to include in your geography/social studies unit, we explored the region and culture of India using our five senses {with a few extras thrown in, of course!}. The next two 'stations' in our exploration of India lesson incorporated the sounds and smells of India... The Smells of India {affectionately deemed "The Smelly Station" by the kiddos} At the 'smelly station', we used our noses to explore the various spices used in Indian cooking - ground cinnamon, cumin, ground cloves, turmeric, chili powder, and ginger. It was quite funny to watch the kids' faces as they caught a whiff of some of the more potent spices. After {carefully!} passing around the jars for a quick sniff, I offered each child a magnifying glass and we took a look at the spices up close. I asked them what colors they could see in each of the mixtures - the chili powder worked best for this exercise - and it was fun watching them confer with each other. As an extra, I added some sandalwood incense oil to the station, explaining to the children what incense is used for, what forms it comes in, etc. The Sounds of India Since our night was decently short, our "sounds of India" station was super informal. I downloaded a variety of traditional Indian music from iTunes to play in the background as the kids moved from station to station and printed out pictures of common instruments - the Indian flute, the sitar, etc. - to post by the CD player for the kiddos to explore on their own. After seeing how much the girls enjoy playing with the scented playdough we made recently (and how often) I decided to create a game including some other 'scents of Christmas'. At first Bubble was reluctant to smell any of the satchets, but once she got a sniff of the cinnamon (really, who doesn't like cinnamon?!) she was right into it, sorting the cards into two piles - the ones she liked and the ones that were "too yucky". I'll be elaborating on this activity tomorrow using photo cards since most of the scents are of things that Bubble has never seen before in their natural form. Our ten scents of Christmas: Cinnamon - ground spice Pine Tree - cut needles from a pine tree in our park Cranberry - crushed dried cranberries Clove - whole dried cloves Peppermint - essence on cotton pad Almond - essence on cotton pad Vanilla - essence on cotton pad Spice - ground allspice Chocolate - sweetened cocoa powder Ginger - ground I really wanted to add Nutmeg and Cherry to this list, but was all out of both nutmeg spice and cherry extract. I think they'd be a great addition though! WE USED: * cardboard strips (cut from a cardboard box) * small plastic snap lock bags (available at craft and dollar stores) * marker/texta * sticky tape * items to fill the bags (see list above of what we used) * needle These sensory cards were really simple to make - I cut strips from a box we had and used a marker to write the names of our 'scents' on each one. Each scented item was added to a bag and then taped to it's corrosponding card. The essences were added to a cotton pad cut to fit inside the bags. I used a needle to create tiny holes in the pine needle and cloves bags, but all of the other scents easily permeated their bags and needed no piercing. I loved this game as much as Bubble did, the room smelt so warm and festive with all of these scents in the air.

One activity we did for the sense of Smell was "Guess that Smell!" I put out four cups with four different types of items inside (peanut butter, lemonade, honey, rotten egg) and then I put tin foil on the top with a small hole. The kids then had to smell each one and guess what was inside. They then drew pictures of what they thought was in each one. I had shapes on the cups for the kids to be able to draw for example that in the circle cut they guess it was peanut butter, etc. It was great and it was a little difficult for some of the kids but they loved it!

Invite your students to explore Christmas with their nose! "The Sweet Smell of Christmas" by Patricia M. Scarry is one of those books that I just love for many reasons. It is interactive, simple to read and understand, and it integrates the all important sense of smell (and taste) with the holiday season...
Students gain a rigorous background in the primary human "sensors," as preparation for comparing them to some electronic equivalents in the associated activity. A review of human vision, hearing, smell, taste and touch, including the anatomies and operational principles, is delivered through a PowerPoint® presentation. Students learn the concept of "stimulus-sensor-coordinator-effector-response" to describe the human and electronic sensory processes. Student pairs use blindfolds, paper towels and small candies in a taste/smell sensory exercise. They take pre/post quizzes and watch two short online videos. Concepts are further strengthened by conducting the associated activity the following day, during which they learn about electronic touch, light, sound and ultrasonic sensors and then "see" sound waves while using microphones connected to computers running (free) Audacity® software.
