One day Nora and Tilly were in their playroom with their heads close together in deep conversation. "They're quiet up there," thought Mummy (me imagines a mummy in wrapping here) "I wonder what mischief they're up to." She went up and put her head round the door. "We were just wishing Daddy kept a shop" they said. "We could have fun serving behind the counter." "Well, how would you like to run the White Elephant stall at our Church Bazaar?" said Mummy. "What's a 'White Elephant' stall?" asked Tilly. "It's where people send all the things they don't want, like an old lampshade or a teapot" said Mummy, "and why not make a few things yourselves out of some old bits of material?" The next day they roped in several of their school-friends and in less then no time they had a splendid collection for their stall" At last came the day of the bazaar. A very grand lady was coming to open it and the children drew lots as to who was to present the Duchess with a bouquet. "I hope Nora wins" said Tilly. "She can curtsy so gracefully. I always fall over backwards" Well, Nora won, and after the opening ceremony, she hurried off to their stall to start business. "Where's Tilly?" She asked, but no one had seen her. Suddenly, they spotted Tilly threading her way though the crowd. "I had to run home to fetch a little parcel I had forgotten/" She said. "What is it?" asked Nora. "Something for the stall?" "Well yes," said Tilly, "But I don't suppose anyone will buy it," and she tore off the paper and string and there was a funny little needle-case mad out of tiny pieces of flannel, all different colors and filled with needles of all sizes. "Where did you get it?" asked Nora. "I made it myself," said Tilly. "But i'm afraid the stitches aren't very neat." "I think it is beautifully made" said a strange voice behind them. "I would like to buy it for my daughter's work-basket." They all turned to see who the customer was, and believe you me, it was the Duchess herself! After that, there was a rush of people round their stall, everything was sold.

This is an experiment to try and catch up with the 21st century, but the only thing I can think of to talk about is definitely not of this century - my paper doll collecting. You remember paper dolls, you cut them out and dressed them with paper clothing that had tabs on them. I loved them as a child and now that I'm middle aged I have the spending power to revisit my early passion. My favourites are those published by Merrill in the 1940s and 50s, with their beautifully illustrated covers by artists such as Pearl Frush (her usual works were "wholesome" pinups) and Norman Mingo, the creator of the first Alfred E. Newman cover of Mad Magazine in 1956. Pictured is Lucy locket and Kitty Fisher was by Charlot Byi who also illustrated mass market children's books. A favourite, which I think I may have had as a child, is Little Fairy. It has that same innocence in the jewel coloured Norman Rockwell style of graphic art. The cover artist was Morgan Kane and the clothing pages by Doris Richardson. Morgan Kane may still be active.He (or maybe his family?) has his own website. If it is him, it's not bad for someone who graduated from art school in 1942. He has also done many racy book jackets and pin ups in his career. Not at all Rockwell. Paper dolls also featured in magazines and comics. A highly collectable magazine paper doll is Nora and Tilly which was published in the British Woman and Home from the 1950s to mid 60s. The clear fresh illustrations seem to hark back to a more wholesome age. In the 50s their page had better quality paper than the rest of the magazine but this was phased out in the 60s. It is , of course, difficult to find the old magazines with the Nora and Tilly page still intact but it happens occasionally (probably from households who had sons only). A fellow collector in the UK has a much better strike rate than me, she has almost a complete set. I know of one other collector in Australia (I'm sure there are others) and like me she has benefited from the kindly shared images from the UK collector. Another paper doll which I had as a child and is very collectable is the glorious Golden Girl. This is also by a pin-up artist Arthur Sarnoff. (He also did one of Esther Williams the swimmer actress. Alas, I have only one doll and no clothes from that set.) He may have done only the covers, it was common to have one artist for the cover art and another for the clothes, the "body" art. As with many of the Merrill publications Golden Girl came in two versions, one with 6 pages of clothes and one with eight. The other version of this paper doll is Gay and Gail which was probably the one I had as it matches my name. Most of the paper doll sets that I had as a child are now the top of the range for collectors, obviously my mother had good taste! Unfortunately she was also very good at having periodic thorough clean outs when offspring finally left home!

base July is almost over. Back to school soon! lots of stuff happening at work. Busy busy. It's hot here! Anyway, this month's theme was Ballerina/Dancer. i pretty much just stuck with ballerina. I can't say I've seen many ballets, because I usually fall asleep but I love love love ballerina costumes. And a few of my favorite movies involve ballerinas (The Red Shoes, Susperia, Black Swan). As a kid, I loved ballerina paper dolls. Wait, I still do! Included are lots of tutus, including Odette from the Swan Princess. Three sets of ballet shoes, and three hair styles. I found these pages while going through a bag of embroidery someone gave me. I don't know how old they are, however, I also found newspaper clippings from 1961 in the same bag. I really like Nora and Tilly, ( I've always liked paper dolls ). The colors on both pages are very bright.

I started working on this embroidery (fabric from the Moda Minick & Simpson Snowfall collection) in November, and I finished it awhile ago. I had no real idea where it was going, but this morning, I figured out what to do with the small, highly detailed piece. Yes, cutting it apart was every bit as scary as steeking!
