This painting is attributable to the late Zand or early Qajar period (twelfth century AH / eighteenth CE or thirteenth century AH / nineteenth CE). This is an album, in the form of an accordion book, of Persian and Indian calligraphy and miniatures, as well as two European prints, assembled in the thirteenth century AH / nineteenth CE. It contains fourteen illustrations, two of which are ascribed to Bihzād (fol. 2b) and Riz̤ā Muṣavvir (fol. 6a). There are also bird and flower paintings attributable to the late Zand or early Qajar periods, as well as late Mughal portrait paintings. There are numerous calligraphy specimens in various Persian scripts, such as Nayrīzī-style naskh, taʿlīq, nastaʿlīq, and shikastah. This small, illuminated single-volume copy of Qurʾan was produced in Iran in the thirteenth century AH / nineteenth CE. The manuscript opens with an illuminated double-page incipit with the verses of chapter 1 (Sūrat al-fātiḥah) and the initial verses of chapter 2 (Sūrat al-baqarah) decorated with interlinear illumination and framed by a polychrome border and headpieces of floral design on a blue ground (fols. 2b-3a) . The text is written in a vocalized naskh script in black with reading marks in red and text divisions of sixty verses (ḥizb), thirty verses (juzʾ), and niṣf al-juzʾ inscribed in red in the margins. Illuminated discs with colored dots separate the verses. Chapter headings are in red or blue riqāʿ script on a gold background. The nineteenth-century lacquer binding with floral composition on a red field is contemporary with the manuscript. It contains twenty-five leaves of Persian and Indian paintings and calligraphies, photographs, and European prints. The pages range in date from the eleventh century AH / seventeenth CE to the thirteenth century AH / nineteenth CE. The calligraphies, in nastaʿlīq and shikastah scripts, are signed by Bunyād al-Tabrīzī (dated 1045 AH / 1635-6 CE), Ibn Muḥammad Riz̤ā Muḥammad ʿAlī (dated 1151 AH / 1738-9 CE), and ʿAbd Allāh and Ḥakīm, who are possibly ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusaynī and Ḥakīm Rukna. The Persian paintings include Safavid, Zand, and Qajar examples. The Reception at the court of Shah 'Abbas I (fol. 50a) dates to the early eleventh century AH / seventeenth CE. There are standing portrait paintings and images of female sitters that belong to the late Zand and early Qajar periods. The Indian examples are Mughal, with one erotic scene that is attributable to the Deccan. The European prints include English portraiture and French religious prints based on Evangelicae historiae imagines (Antwerp, 1593) and Adnotationes et meditationes in Evangelia (Antwerp, 1594) by the Jesuit priest Jerome Nadal. Botanical nomenclature: Trachycarpus fortunei Naini Tal Common name: Chusan Palm Family: Arecaceae A visibly robust and cold hardy cultivar of the Chusan palm that was introduced from China to the Himalayan town of Naini Tal and elsewhere in northern India in the nineteenth century, perhaps by Robert Fortune himself. In the 1990's, seeds from this cultivar have been widely distributed as Trachycarpus takil, which grows wild in the same general area but is a clearly distinct species.

The Major Diatonic Harmonica was originally intended for playing simple Folk music of the nineteenth century and its notation layout was adequate for that purpose. The Major Diatonic harmonica is the most commonly used tuning for playing Blues, Rock, Country Folk & Jazz. Several other manufacturers, using various names stamped on their cover plates, for marketing purposes, have the exact same notation layout as a Lee Oskar Major Diatonic harmonica. The original style of playing, known as 1st Position (Straight Harp), is suitable for playing simple melodies, Folk music and various other types of music that call for melody lines, along with some chords. 1st Position (Straight Harp), is still used by many players today, but due to its simplicity of sound, it is not as popular as 2nd Position (Cross Harp). The Major Diatonic is the standard Blues tuning and may be played in the 1st & 2nd Positions (Straight Harp & Cross Harp). The evolution of music introduced Blues, Rock and Country and along with these new forms of music came the need for greater expression. Harmonica players began to experiment and found that when they primarily used the inhale (draw) notes, a different kind of sound was provided. This resulted in a new and more fluid style of playing, known as 2nd Position (Cross Harp). 90% of today’s players use 2nd Position for Blues, Rock, Country & Pop music. 2nd Position (Cross Harp), is a Blues scale that offers a more expressive and soulful sound. Many of the draw reeds can be bent (a technique used to change the pitch of a note).
