Vintage print of a study for a female representation of the Iliad by French neo-classical painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780 - 1867) for his 1827 painting "The Apotheosis of Homer," a symmetrical composition depicting Homer being crowned by a winged figure personifying Victory or the Universe. Forty-four additional figures pay homage to the poet in a kind of classical confession of faith. At his feet sit personifications of Iliad and Odyssey. The original of this painting measures over 12' x 16' and resides at the Louvre. (If Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey are epic poems, this is an "epic" painting!) The print offered here is a copy of one of more than 100 surviving drawings and sketches Ingres painted in advance of creating his masterpiece. It's a photographic print measuring 14" x 18" and it comes loosely inside a textured paper folder with window. Printed on the bottom left: "INGRES - Study for the Iliad, T. Edward Hanley Collection [St. Bonaventure University, Saint Bonaventure, NY]," and on the right: "Published by Shorewood Publishers, Inc., Distributed by Penn Prints, New York." The original has since passed from the Hanley Collection and has resided at The Met since 1971. We estimate the print dates from the 1960s. Excellent preowned vintage condition; ready for framing.
$6 FLAT RATE SHIPPING (see shipping policies below). This listing is for an 80+-year-old menu from famed New Orleans restaurant Antoine's (home of Oysters Rockefeller, so named for the richness of the sauce) commemorating its 100th anniversary (1840 - 1940). The menu is completely in French, except for a notice at the top concerning pricing. The most expensive item on the menu? Chateaubriand $6.50. The least expensive? Demitasse $.10. A souffle au chocolat would only cost $2 (for two), but you'd have to wait 40 minutes for it to be made from scratch. The "notice to the public" warned guests that "good food takes time; if we make you wait, it's to serve you better and please you." Fascinating Louisiana collectible or foodie/chef gift. It measures 8-7/8" x 11.5". It's in good vintage condition with creases where it was previously folded and some stains, nothing major for a paper item this old. A NOTE ABOUT VINTAGE: Everything we sell at AlegriaCollection is vintage, meaning that it's at least 20 years old, often much older. Consequently, most of our items show evidence of previous use and, in general, this is viewed as adding to the aged character of a piece. SEE SHIPPING POLICY BELOW. Such a fun find: a manual, pump-action vacuum cleaner from the early 1900s. This primitive "appliance" was originally painted a dark burgundy red with great gold graphics reading "Everybody's Vacuum Cleaner, Trademark Reg. U. S. Pat. Off., Patent Pending, Manufactured by Everybody's Vacuum Cleaner Co., New York, N.Y." It consists of a long metal tube with a wooden plunger insert with handle. Originally, there would have been what today we would call a "brush/roller" attached at the very bottom and a flannel bag inside. Sadly, these pieces are missing. Theoretically, you'd push the wooden handle into the tube to remove the air, then pull to create a suction and hopefully vacuum your floors. Even with the missing pieces, we can see why this design didn't catch on and the vacuum cleaner was bound to evolve. Great conversation piece; you could even use it as a fireplace bellows, as it appears to blow out more air than it takes in. Measures 44 in. long. Good antique condition with expected wear to paint and wood finish, and minor dents, all consistent with age. May ship partially disassembled. SEE SHIPPING POLICY BELOW. Delicate vintage Monticello by Steubenville creamer, creamy white body with sky blue gadroon around rim and foot and gold gold accents with a bead detail. The backstamp features an image of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and reads "Monticello Trademark Dinner Ware, Made in U.S.A., Pats. Pdg." The Monticello shape was produced by the Steubenville Pottery Company of Steubenville, OH, in the late 1940s and early 1950s. This piece dates from the earlier part of that period as it refers to patents being pending, while later pieces refer to specific design patent numbers. The Steubenville Pottery was in business from 1879 to 1959. The cream pitcher has crazing and discoloration, as well as a small nick on the foot and a repair on the spout (see photos); otherwise, in good used and usable vintage condition, but priced accordingly. The creamer 6.25" from spout to handle x about 2 7/8" tall at its highest point. It has a lovely shape and the delicate colors and decor style are typical of tableware of the 1940s (HANDWASH ONLY, PLEASE). See photos and use zoom. Two matching pieces are listed separately and can be found here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/AlegriaCollection?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=1235625851&search_query=monticello If buying all three, please request a coupon for 10% off. SEE SHIPPING POLICY BELOW. Huge vintage etched brass bell with wooden handle, all original. At 14.5" tall x 5 3/8" in diameter, this bell has presence. It's fitted with its original clapper, and it's very loud. The abstract etched pattern resembles leaves. We believe this is a fairly old piece, as the finish on the wood has alligatored over time (see photos); it was obtained from the estate of a very elderly woman who owned lots of antiques and eclectic collectibles. The brass finish has lots of uneven patina, with some dark areas. It's possible that it could be polished to a more even finish, although we can't guarantee it--it's beautiful as is. There's shallow surface crack on the handle and a small amount of play where the handle meets the top of the bell, neither of which detracts. This would make a great addition to a Christmas vignette or old-fashioned school room display; a bell collector's "holy grail." See photos, use zoom and ask any questions before buying, as there are no returns. SEE SHIPPING POLICY BELOW. Vintage vegetable serving bowls in the Virginia Rose pattern by Homer Laughlin--sold as a set. The bowls are identical, except for the added color trim, one red, the other blue. Each bowl has a scalloped edge with raised floral designs. A floral bouquet is the focal point at the bottom of the bowl. The rims are decorated with a colored band (green on one, red on the other), and heart designs (also sometimes described as four-leaf clovers). Garlands follow the hearts, and finally, vertical lines in graduated sizes reach towards the bottom of the bowls. Based on the date codes, these bowls were manufactured in 1939 (red) and 1940 (green). They show wear consistent with age and continual use (see below for dimensions and condition). They are emblematic of the everyday dishware used in American homes during this period--utilitarian but decorative--and today they make a great addition to the farmhouse aesthetic. DIMENSIONS: 9.5" diameter at the rim; 5" diameter at the base; 3 1/8" tall CONDITION: Good used vintage condition showing wear consistent with going on 90-100 years of constant use. The red bowl has several chips on the underside of the rim; the floral medallion is faded but still colorful. The green bowl shows lots of crazing, discoloration and a very faded floral medallion. Both bowls have a dark mark on the interior wall. See photos. Priced accordingly. The original book was published in 1948. It's unclear when this large print edition was issued. This is a former library book, last due date in 1979. The book is a cloth-covered hardback with dust jacket. It tells the story of the Gilbreth family: industrial engineer parents raising their large brood in the early 20th century. A best seller when first published, and "gloriously funny" according to the dust jacket, the book chronicles some of the "time and motion" studies conducted by Mr. Gilbreth with his children as the subjects. Excellent used vintage condition with some tears on the dust jacket--not a professional book grade, but visual observation. Measures 11.25" x 9". See photos and use zoom. SEE SHIPPING POLICY BELOW. Lovely fruit or serving bowl with 22-kt gold filigree embellishments and a central fruit motif. Made by the Atlas China Company of New York (not to be confused with Atlas China of Ohio--see brief history below), the bowl has a mostly square shape with rounded corners and subtle dips along each of the four top edges. The gold design of wispy fronds appears in the top 2 or so inches of the interior and exterior walls. The rim is topped with a thick gold edge. The central fruit medallion features a pear, peaches, an apple and grapes in vibrant yellows, greens, blues, and reds. The mark on the bottom is stamped in gold and reads "Atlas China [within a diamond shape], New York, Since 1918, Warranted 22 Kt Gold." There's also an incised 0 and a code within an oval that looks like BB4. The bowl measures 10 1/2 in. from corner to corner x about 3 1/2 in. tall at the corners; the base is 6 1/8 in. in diameter. The bowl is in excellent vintage condition with no cracks or chips. There's very minor wear on the gold rim and minimal utensil marks on the flat surface; appears to have been used very hardly at all. See photos and use zoom. This is a beautiful piece, in great condition, suitable for gift giving. HISTORY (from online sources): The Atlas China Company NY was founded in 1918 by Samuel Bernthal and Nathan Zank. They produced Currier and Ives wall plates and tableware featuring floral motifs and 18th century courting couples, all with lots of gold embellishments. Pieces with a fruit motif appear to be more rare. The company may have made wares for other companies, such as Homer Laughlin. It's believed that it survived into modern times, but we were unable to find any additional information. A NOTE ABOUT VINTAGE: Everything we sell at AlegriaCollection is vintage, meaning that it's at least 20 years old, often much older. Consequently, most of our items show evidence of previous use and, in general, this is viewed as adding to the aged character of a piece. We make every effort to accurately describe any flaws and encourage you to carefully read the description, particularly when purchasing vintage as a gift. SEE SHIPPING POLICY BELOW. Lovely pressed and dried flowers framed under glass. The flowers are artistically arranged on a grayish hemp-like fabric. The hardwood frame is a light brown, which complements the colors of the flowers. Included are pansies, delphiniums, and asters, among others. There's a label remnant on the back which, after some digging, we determined to be from Poland's "Cepelia" (the phonetic abbreviation of "Centrala Przemysłu Ludowego i Artystycznego"--literally: Headquarters of the Folk and Artistic Industry); see history below. Overall measurements are 14 3/4 x 7 1/4 in. There's a metal hanger on the back. The piece is in very good vintage condition; colors are still vibrant. Some petals on the right side towards the bottom have become loose and the dust cover is torn, but it's perfectly usable as is. The handwriting on the back appears to be the names of the giver and receiver. See photos and use zoom. HISTORY (from online sources): The state-run cooperative known as Cepelia was established in 1949 by decree of the Economic Committee of the Council of Ministers. It quickly bloomed and proliferated. Special sections were organized in all of the larger cities across Poland, with new work centers created where employees underwent special training. All other related cooperatives in the folk and artistic industry were gradually absorbed by Cepelia, including those that had been organized in the early 20th century but had become inactive due to both world wars. Thousands of people found work in the production units of this new institution, while the number of its craftsmen was estimated to be around 200,000. The primary objective was to promote and support traditional folk arts and crafts--from pottery, to textiles, to furniture. The sugar bowl and lid have extensive crazing and discoloration, and there's a small nick on the underside of the bowl's base (last photo); otherwise, in good used and usable vintage condition, but priced accordingly. The sugar bowl measures 5.25" from handle to handle x about 3 7/8" tall to the top of the lid's finial.
