He is Vice Director of the Paris-Saclay Institute of Neuroscience (NeuroPSI), one of the largest Neuroscience research institutes in France, and he is also the founder and director of the European Institute of Theoretical Neuroscience (EITN). He is a specialist of electrophysiology and computational neuroscience, and his research team studies brain states in general, such as the wake-sleep cycle, anesthesia, epilepsy and states of minimal consciousness. These subjects are investigated using a mix of experimental data and computational approaches, from mice to humans. Terrence Sejnowski is a pioneer in Computational Neuroscience and recipient of the 2022 International Gruber Prize in Neuroscience. He is the Francis Crick Chair at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies and a Distinguished Professor at the University of California, San Diego, where he a co-director of the Institute for Neural Computation. In this paper, inertial neural networks are under investigation, that is, the second order differential equations. The recently introduced new type of motions, unpredictable oscillations, are considered for the models. The motions continue a line of periodic and almost periodic oscillations. The research is of very strong importance for neuroscience, since the existence of unpredictable solutions proves Poincaré chaos. Sufficient conditions have been determined for the existence, uniqueness, and exponential stability of unpredictable solutions. The results can significantly extend the role of oscillations for artificial neural networks exploitation, since they provide strong new theoretical and practical opportunities for implementation of methods of chaos extension, synchronization, stabilization, and control of periodic motions in various types of neural networks. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the validity of the theoretical results.

Frequency-specific patterns of neural activity are increasingly interpreted as transient bursts of isolated events rather than as rhythmically sustained oscillations. This has potentially far-reaching implications for theories of how such oscillations originate and how they shape neural computations. As this debate unfolds, we explore alternative interpretations and ask how best to distinguish between them.
Every brain state is associated with a particular band of brain frequencies called neural oscillations or brain waves — delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma waves.
Complex networks have been programmed to mimic the input and output functions in multiple biophysical algorithms of cortical neurons at spiking resolution. Prior research has demonstrated that the ineffectual features of membranes can be taken into account by discrete fractional commensurate, non-commensurate and variable-order patterns, which may generate multiple kinds of memory-dependent behaviour. Firing structures involving regular resonator chattering, fast, chaotic spiking and chaotic bursts play important roles in cortical nerve cell insights and execution. Yet, it is unclear how extensively the behaviour of discrete fractional-order excited mechanisms can modify firing cell attributes. It is illustrated that the discrete fractional behaviour of the Izhikevich neuron framework can generate an assortment of resonances for cortical activity via the aforesaid scheme. We analyze the bifurcation using fragmenting periodic solutions to demonstrate the evolution of periods in the framework’s behaviour. We investigate various bursting trends both conceptually and computationally with the fractional difference equation. Additionally, the consequences of an excitable and inhibited Izhikevich neuron network (INN) utilizing a regulated factor set exhibit distinctive dynamic actions depending on fractional exponents regulating over extended exchanges. Ultimately, dynamic controllers for stabilizing and synchronizing the suggested framework are shown. This special spiking activity and other properties of the fractional-order model are caused by the memory trace that emerges from the fractional-order dynamics and integrates all the past activities of the neuron. Our results suggest that the complex dynamics of spiking and bursting can be the result of the long-term dependence and interaction of intracellular and extracellular ionic currents.
The amount of information our sensory systems send to the brain far exceeds its processing capacity. To cope with this constant barrage of information, our brain has developed the remarkable ability to select only the inputs that are behaviorally interesting and relevant, while filtering out irrelevant stimuli. These attentional mechanisms have been associated with oscillatory activity in neural populations (for example, in EEG recordings). However, it is not known how these network oscillations in the brain are related to firing properties of neurons. This book attempts to link the neural firing properties with oscillations observed in small as well as large neural populations, both in humans and monkeys. Establishing such links are key to understanding higher order cognitive functions such as attention, multi-sensory integration, working memory, and consciousness. This book will be of interest to anyone interested in understanding the relationship between neural signals at various levels, especially neurophysiologists and clinicians studying the functional role of oscillations (in gamma and high-gamma range) and theoretical scientists interested in rate versus temporal coding.
Since the discovery of synchronized neural oscillations in the primary visual cortex, intense efforts have been made in understanding the underlying neural mechanisms. Based on results from experiments in mammalian brains, computational models have been developed to study the dynamics of larger populations of neurons showing oscillatory activity. In this book we describe a model of phase-coupled oscillators, which simulates neuronal activity in the primary visual cortex. The phase model can be derived from a mean-field model by reducing it to basic functional principles. A comparison of the dynamical and synchronization properties of the two modeling approaches shows that both networks produce common results for simple stimuli, yet distinctive results for illusory stimuli. We introduce an extension of the phase model that reproduces the results of the mean-field network and allows to analyze the mechanisms of the perceptual segmentation of illusory figures in the brain. This book is set in the intersection of theoretical neuroscience, cognitive science and psychology, and directed towards everyone who is interested in the neuronal basis of perception.
