Peter Ilsley was a self-taught ceramic artist who achieved world fame. He died in 2014. He became a full-time potter in the late 60’s and was also an actor who played minor roles in several TV series including Dr Who, Basil Brush and Z Cars. Peter was also chairman of the Midland branch of the Craft Potters Association. A proud follower of the Arts and Crafts Movement, inspired by John Ruskin and William Morris, he specialized in hand-thrown vases and bowls and conducted hundreds of experiments in his ground breaking development of spectacular crystalline glazes. Peter wrote a book, “The Challenge of Crystals” published in 1999, which led to him being in demand for exhibitions, lectures and workshops in Asia, America, Canada, and throughout Europe. The Chinese invited him to demonstrate to a huge audience of ceramicists at Beijing University. The puzzle mug was one of his creations ... Oil on canvas painting by the well known American artist, Harry Roseland. Signed lower left and dated 1919. The painting depicts a beautiful young lady wearing a pearl necklace and with red roses in her hair and on her dress. Unlined. Craquelure throughout, minor stretcher bar wear. In paint in face, roses, neckline and background areas. Unframed. Harry Roseland was born in 1866 to German immigrants in Brooklyn, New York, where he lived his entire life. Roseland studied art under John Bernard Whittaker at Adelphi College in Brooklyn, James Carroll Beckwith in Manhattan, and possibly Thomas Eakins in Philadelphia. Before arriving at the style he became known for, Roseland experimented with landscapes, figure paintings, and still lifes. Between 1888 and 1898, he mainly painted scenes of working and agricultural life in New York City’s outer boroughs. In the last years of the century, Roseland developed his signature theme: realist portrayals of Black Americans. Over the course of his career, Roseland won many awards at exhibitions throughout the United States including the National Academy of Design, the Salmagundi Club, and the 1902 Charleston Exposition. His work now resides in the permanent collections of the Birmingham Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and Morris Museum. Biography Questroyal Gallery.
