Here are my February shelves. Put together with a little extra love! Brilliant little jewelry boxes. . .opening and closing containers. A perennial hit in the classroom. Spooning gems. No little girl can resist playing with gems. spooning sand. we always need a little zen garden in our class. This is salt and heart baubles. Llittle ones love this tactile work and yes it is always a mess. So be prepared to teach how to sweep. It is attractive as well; it sits on shelf for a few short minutes before someone snatches it. These tongs are from Montessori Services. The children transfer heart baubles. The tongs make the work exciting. Takes minimal hand strength so most feel confident. Pretty pom poms. I keep finding them around the room under tables, in backpacks, on the playground... soon there will be one up someones nose, I just know it. Flowers in baby size colander This is super popular!! Cutting heart necklaces (Mardi Gras style via Michaels). Children cut each individual heart up. What they gather in the bowl they are allowed to take home in a paper envelope. To do what with I don't know???? maybe put in a bowl. This is about the process and not the product. and the kids can't get enough of cutting. Jen got these cute containers at Michaels. Children enjoy the simplicity and reading messages.

Ty was so excited to use tongs a few months ago and was doing well, but his interest completely dropped around Christmas-time. I would really like him to work on his grasp, so (after several weeks of working up the courage to do water indoors with our floors) I decided to see if he would tong objects out of water. He loved it! We used pieces from Toppletree, a balancing game he received as a gift from his Aunt and Uncle. He worked on 1:1 correspondence, placing each piece into it's own space in an ice cube tray. His focus and determination for this activity surprised me. He was really into it! Tyler seems to really enjoy being responsible for his spills lately. Yay! When Ty became bored with tonging, I gave him a large slotted spoon to practice scooping the pieces out and into a bowl. This was tricky...too tricky. The pieces moved around a lot in the water and seemed to avoid the spoon at all costs, so he ended up putting them on the spoon by hand and then dumping them in. I ran and grabbed him Duplos to use instead and he had a bit more luck, but the object size didn't matter as much as I thought; it was still difficult. He wasn't nearly as into it as he was with the tongs. We will repeat the tongs again for sure! Linking-up with the fabulous Living Montessori Now and 1+1+1=1

So better late then never... here's how we're celebrating Valentine's Day in the classroom... Practical Life shelf (left to right, top to bottom) tonging heart erasers, sorting colored hearts, transferring glass hearts, eye-dropper work, spooning sequins, pouring-pitcher to cup (with pink sand!), cutting veggies sewing heart valentines! cutting out hearts- the child traces the line with scissors and opens it up for surprise! heart pattern matching (I made this in power point- just copy and paste the hearts and add different colors/borders/textures- make 2 copies- cut one set out and laminate) (heart bracelet: paper heart punch outs, red pipe cleaners, puncher and pad. Pick out 6 hearts, punch hole in center and lace onto pipe cleaner) heart dot painting: cut out heart on card stock, laminate and re-cut out heart- makes an instant, customized stencil! draw-your-own penguin (not Valentine's Day related- but oh so cute!) <3 enjoy
