Antique Lacquered Gilded Wood Shrine Statue Mongolian Warrior Ancestor Effigy Origin: China. Circa: Yuen, 15th century and earlier H 17 in. (42cm), W 9 in. (22.5cm), D 7 in. (17.5cm) Condition: minor burn and gilt loss Kublai Khan ruled China in the 13th century. He adapted Chinese traditions and made Buddhism the state religion. This wood sculpture of a Mongolian warrior is consecrated with ritual offerings, sealed with a rectangular wood plug in the back. The bulky Mongol figure stylistically belongs to the Ming period (1368-1644). Though time has weathered some of its former glory, the militant mudra (Tarjani) of his left hand, his clenching right fist, and the powerful warrior sitting posture clearly indicated his chieftain status. The statue has burn marks and extensive gilt loss in the back. The lacquered and painted front is largely intact. The figure is a rare shrine statue that chronicled the Mongolian's historic assimilation into the Chinese culture. *Authenticity Guaranteed.
