Die Alpen werden gewöhnlich als Raum abseits von Modernisierungen und als wenig offen gegenüber äusseren Einflüssen wahrgenommen. Allerdings lässt sich ein Modernisierungsbegriff, der wirtschaftliches und soziales Wachstum als räumlich und zeitlich gleich bleibenden Entwicklungsprozess betrachtet, auch kaum auf die Geschichte von alpinen Kulturen übertragen. Die Beiträge beleuchten Aspekte alpiner Erfahrung und zeigen zugleich die Schwierigkeit einer Abgrenzung von 'Tradition' und 'Moderne'. Les Alpes sont habituellement perçues comme un espace à l’écart de la modernisation et peu ouvert à ses influences. Cependant le modèle de modernisation, qui considère la croissance économique et sociale comme étant le résultat de stades toujours égaux dans le temps et dans l’espace, ne se prête pas à être entièrement transposé aux parcours historiques des sociétés alpines. Les contributions rassemblées dans ce volume confirment les nombreuses facettes des expériences du monde alpin et la labilité des frontières entre les notions de 'tradition' et de 'modernité'.
