Tangled vines and rosebuds sprout from their mouths, and in some cases leaves from plants pop from the busts’ noses, engulfing the faces in their entirety. In each bust the plants are used as both ornamentation and methods of destruction, forming crowns on the subjects’ heads as they wrap themselves around the neck in a threatening gesture. More

(Comments here are the Kunsthistorisches Museum curator's remarks on the accompanying plaque): Last Quarter of the 15th Century. Laurana created half a dozen female busts, which in their strict stylisation hold a mysterious attraction to the viewer. As two of these busts depict Battista Storza and Beatrice d'Aragona, it was assumed that also the other exemplars represent ladies from these royal houses, which so far could not be verified. Due to their striking similarity of the Viennese bust -- the only one which has preserved vestiges of the original polychromy -- with a portrait of Laura, Petrarca's legendary lover, she was also suggested as possible sitter.
