Today we are so happy to announce Oda May's School of Sewing quilt-along! Class is in session... A note about ratings for this quilt-along: Overall, the quilt is rated as Moderate, but many of the blocks fall into the Easy category. You will see the ratings vary between Easy and Moderate from week to week. For more information about what these ratings mean, click on the graphic above. Welcome to Week 1 in Oda May's School of Sewing! It's me Oda May, here, the hostess of this quilt-along and the lady behind the scenes here at the Moda Bake Shop.
Hi everyone, I’m excited to share instructions for a medallion quilt. I’ve never designed one before, and it’s been fun to use so many different blocks and techniques in one quilt. But before I get to

A peek into my love of fabric, piecing, and quilting!
Is it really the end of September? Where is this year going? Seems like I just asked you all if it was really the end of August! Wasn't that just yesterday? So today I'm making an appearance over
Hello! My name is Allison and I am excited to be a first-time chef at the Moda Bake Shop. It was a delight to come up with this layer cake pattern. I named it “Arabesque” because it reminds me of a cl

I know, I know, I call these posts "Friday Fabric Refresh" but I just couldn't wait until Friday this time! I have a fun surprise at the end of this post so make sure to read all the way to the end! Are you a fan of the Moda Bake Shop? If so, you will love the newest Moda Bake Shop book, Did Someone Say Cake which was released earlier this year. If you have not checked it out yet, you need to! It features 12 quilts made with layer cakes which are precut 10" squares. I have a quilt in the book called Spice Cake, which you can see below. I made that quilt over a year ago using Cider by BasicGrey. That fabric may be difficult to come by now. This pattern is very versatile and looks great in many different fabrics, but I know it can be hard to visualize what a particular fabric collection will look like in a pattern. I used my Electric Quilt 8 software to mockup Spice Cake in a few more recent fabric collections. Now I want to make them all! The first refreshed quilt features the newest Fig Tree collection called Stitched. Joanna of Fig Tree never disappoints and I love the cheery look of this collection! Several months ago, I had created mockups using fabric that had recently been released at that time. This book was supposed to be released in late 2021 so I had originally thought I would be writing this blog post a lot sooner. The publication date was delayed and then the day job kept me from getting this blog post written until now, but I decided to go ahead and share those refreshed versions anyway. These fabric collections are not super old, so you can probably still find them (they are all available at Fat Quarter Shop as layer cakes as of when this post is written). You might already have them in your stash! Cozy Up by Corey Yoder was one of my favorite collections from last fall. If you want a fall quilt but can't find Cider like I used, Cozy Up would be a great alternative! Fall not your thing? How about the soft, romantic colors of Love Note by Lella Boutique? If you loved her Nest collection, Love Note is similar in colors and feel! Are you a Bonnie and Camille fan? Make a bright and happy quilt with their One Fine Day collection. This collection is full of their signature prints and colors! I've become a bigger and bigger fan of Moda's Ruby Star Society fabrics over the last couple of years. I refreshed Spice Cake in a few of my favorite more recent releases. Stay Gold by Melody Miller isn't super recent, but there are still layer cakes to be found. This collection is a lot brighter than I am typically drawn to, but it keeps growing on me! Unruly Nature by Jen Hewett is a bit more muted and is a collection I can't wait to sew with! I plan to make a future quilt sample with the fabric that I bought, but it would also make a great Spice Cake quilt! Camellia is a recent Ruby Star release by Melody Miller and is bright and happy with cute tea cups and spoons, pretty butterflies, and large florals. I'm sewing with this fabric right now (can't share yet!) and I love it! I would love to see it in a Spice Cake quilt. Ruby Star also has several basics collections. One of them is Hole Punch Dot by Kimberly Kight. The rainbow of colors means that even as a basic, these fabrics still result in a colorful quilt! I've mostly stuck to Moda fabric collections since this is a Moda Bake Shop book and is affiliated with Moda Fabrics, but I couldn't resist refreshing Spice Cake in Shine On by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery Fabrics (be sure to check out one of my previous blog posts here if you missed my Friday Fabric Refresh post featuring Shine On). Art Gallery does have precut 10" squares, but Shine On has several low volume prints and if I were to make Spice Cake with Shine On, I would probably use fat quarters instead. The pattern does not include fat quarter instructions (it is a book about layer cakes, after all) but you could use 12 fat quarters in place of the 36 layer cake squares. Don't cut 10" squares from your fat quarters though or you won't have enough! Instead, skip to the instructions for how to cut each layer cake square. You will be able to cut enough pieces from each fat quarter to equal three layer cake squares or three blocks. Another recent fabric line that I'm loving these days is Martha by Andrea Patton for Figo Fabrics. There are 12 prints in this line so one fat quarter bundle would be the perfect amount to make this quilt with fat quarters! Finally, I couldn't resist seeing what this quilt would look like in Daybreak, the debut collection by Fran Gulick of Cotton & Joy for Riley Blake Designs. This fabric is so pretty and is a perfect springtime palette. Riley Blake does have precut 10" squares that they call 10" Stackers. Now for the fun surprise that I mentioned at the beginning of this post! If you follow me on Instagram, you may have already entered my giveaway that I posted about yesterday. If you missed it, you can see that post here. Today I'm giving you an additional chance to win! I have a new post up on Instagram about this blog post. After you read this entire blog post, go back to that IG post and comment with your favorite refreshed quilt from this blog post. (Make sure you're commenting on the right IG post; do not post your favorite on the IG post where you tag a friend; that's a separate entry). All the rules can be found on the Instagram posts. Good luck! Whether you are entering the giveaway, buying the book, or already have the book, I hope these refreshed versions have inspired you to make your own Spice Cake quilt! Until next time, Amanda
I am taking part in something so fun this summer and I'm really excited about it! I hope you will join in on the fun! Some of the Moda Bake Shop chefs have come together and designed a really amazing quilt along. The quilt along is a mystery quilt along and we are calling it a Choose Your Own Adventure quilt. We are making a medallion quilt and every week during the quilt along we will release two patterns and you get to pick the one you like the best to make in your own quilt! How fun is that?! Join our Facebook group: Moda Bake Shop Bakers to chat with other members and get inspired. Also, on Instagram, tag all of you posts #chooseyourownadventureqal #campodamay #mbsqal I am going to be editing this post as we go so that you can find all of the posts that are associated with the quilt along. Hi fellow quilters! I'm excited to share a new pillow tutorial with you today at the Moda Bake Shop! ** Link updated to PDF download -- Original Recipe missing from the Bake Shop ** It's made with the fabulous new fabric line, Heart's Content, by Laundry Basket Quilts for Moda. I fell in love with the soft colors and delicate prints of this line created by Edyta Sitar. * This cute home deco pillow will add a touch of class to a couch, loveseat or bench. What's neat is with a single Jelly Roll and a bit a yardage you can make two of these beautiful pillows -- one for you, one for a Christmas gift ;) You know me -- no project would be complete without looking though my stash of Aurifil threads dreaming of ways stitch with these sweet threads. I was thrilled with the outcome! To top-stitch I choose Aurifil 12Wt Mako Cotton in two different colors. It added such interest to the pillow flange. For the free motion quilting I used Aurifil 28Wt and 50Wt threads. The 28Wt served to outline the beautiful prints on the First Kiss fabric and the 50Wt thread was perfect to echo stitch the background. Beautiful threads combined with Quilter's Dream Wool batting equals instant texture! Love, love, love! * I had planned to include wool applique on the center panel of the pillow, but once I started working with the fabric I realized it didn't need applique -- it was beautiful as printed. Now what to do with all the beautiful wools I had purchased from Bunny Hill Designs? Who can turn away from a cute flower accent made from wool? Such Fun! Be sure to stop back and I'll show you how easy they are to whip up. * I may even need to share some of my leftover wool ;) Now be sure to hop on over to the Moda Bake Shop and checkout the tutorial. I would love to hear what you think. * As always I would also LOVE to see anything you create from the tutorial. Wouldn't this pillow be sweet with Christmas fabric ? * Thanks for stopping by today and have a blessed day! Karen PS - A big shout-out to those of you that have been following and encouraging me on Instagram. Sharing the sneaky peeks is fun! Thanks so much for your support.
Once upon a time there were five happy little blocks with happy red centers and happy red diamonds at their corners. They stood out from their neighbors, and were nicknamed “jumping jacks.…
Solids rock. There isn't much I can write about solids - Bella Solids - that you don't already know. They're a basic, a staple. Quilts made entirely with solids can be very traditional or very modern, or both. (See above.) When I started quilting, they were easily found in every color available... probably because there weren't that many colors and if a shop didn't have solids, they didn't have that many bolts. It's much harder now that every fabric manufacturer has a line of solids and that there are so many more colors available. Did you know there are almost 300 colors of Bella Solids?
