With soaring temperatures and hosepipe bans, it's useful to know which drought tolerant garden plants will benefit greatly from the summer heatwave.
Noted for its vigor and superb elegance, Athyrium filix-femina (Lady Fern) is a lovely deciduous fern forming a large rosette of upright to arching, lacy, lance-shaped, fresh-green fronds.
Vernonia lettermannii 'Iron Butterfly' forms vigorous clumps of narrow stems with fine, feathery foliage that are topped by clusters of fluffy, true purple blooms at stem ends in late summer and early fall. Vernonia lettermannii 'Iron Butterfly' foliage resembles that of Amsonia hubrichtii. The blooms are loved by butterflies and is very nice planted with grasses and other late summer blooming perennials. Vernonia lettermannii, also known as Threadleaf Ironweed, is native to Arkansas and Oklahoma. It is typically found on gravel river bars and nearby rocky outcrops. Vernonia lettermannii 'Iron Butterfly' prefers full sun and well-drained soil, but is very tolerant of rough, sandy, infertile, dry soils and hot, dry locations. Wonderfully fragrant, Crocus Chrysanthus 'Cream Beauty' is considered one of the best spring flowering crocuses. Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit, it displays plump, creamy-yellow flowers on the outside with purple margins and a bronzy green base. Bright orange stamens add a fiery spark! This crocus is not only attractive, but also floriferous, vigorous and reliable. Blooming occurs from late winter to early spring. Growing up to 3-4 inches tall (7-10 cm), this beauty naturalizes easily and will come back year after year
50+ What a show stopper! Rudbeckia Autumn Forest flowers reach up to five inches across in some phenomenally beautiful autumn shades including yellow and shades of red and mahogany with darker centers. The flowers are great for cutting as they have strong stems that are long enough to arrange nicely in the vase. They grow quickly and bloom heavily from flower seed sown the same year. Sow Rudbeckia seeds outdoors in the spring after the danger of frost has passed. Prepare soil by loosening the top 1 - 2 inches and removing any weeds. Sow the seeds into the loosened soil and rake in. Walk over the area to gently press the flower seeds into the soil. They love being in full sun and will grow 18-24 inches tall. Keep the flower seeds moist until germination. The plants transplant well and should be spaced 12 - 18 inches apart. They form a clump that will reach 12 inches in width or more. Deadheading prolongs the bloom season. Growing instructions included. **Our Shipping costs cover processing/handling and current postal prices. Fragrant, multiple award-winner Narcissus 'Actaea' displays elegant, pure white flowers, up to 3 in. wide (8 cm), adorned with six wide petals and tiny, red-rimmed, golden-yellow cups. Blooming in mid to late spring, one flower per stem, the blossoms rise atop a clump of narrow, strap-shaped leaves. Great in the sunny border, this daffodil performs better in wet, poorly drained areas than most daffodils. Because of its sweet scent, it makes excellent cut flowers.
