Iris foetidissima This is a great plant for adding to woodland gardens, shady spots, cottage coastal and nature gardens, rockeries etc. It does well in fairly well drained sites in semi-shade at the front of the border, but is quite tolerant of other soil types, salt and moisture. It is an evergreen perennial growing to 80cm high and across, with glossy rich green leaves and produces small, yellow-tinged, dull purple summer flowers followed by large pods opening to show bright orange-red seeds, which persist into winter. It is known as "stinking" because some people find the smell of its leaves unpleasant when crushed or bruised, an odour that has been described as "beefy". Great for Pollinators! Iris sibirica It is a great plant for adding to borders, cottage gardens or prairie type plantings, rockeries etc and areas of well drained damp ground, bog gardens or pond and lake edges. They do well in moist but well drained sites in full sun or partial shade, but are quite tolerant of other soil types and moisture. They are best at the middle of the border, at a pond edge or even as a specimen in pots. It is a deciduous rhizomatous herbaceous perennial growing up to 1.2m tall and 50cm across, with narrow grassy foliage and branched stems bearing up to 5 Violet - Blue flowers, 6 - 7cm wide in early summer, the falls veined purple on white at the base. These are followed by short brown seed pods. Great for Pollinators! Please note the last photo is for illustrative purposes only, showing the size seeds you will receive. This contemporary flora still life photograph of a brown milkweed seed pod on a black background was made by Hudson Valley photographer, Jerry Freedner. The dried brown seed is highlighted in a way which deepens the details on it's surface, producing a beautiful contrast against the crisp black background. archival pigment print 12 x 12 inches unframed, $450 Also available in the following size: 16.5 x 16.5 inches unframed, $600 18 x 18 inches unframed, $750 Statement from the artist: In the sixties I studied photography at the New School in NYC, and then with Lisette Model. I've enjoyed many workshops and, through the pre-digital age, thousands of hours in my darkroom. As it was then and as it is now, I have an enduring affinity with nature in all of its forms. Within the last ten years my concerns have shifted to the intense fragility of this earth we share. My work is apolitical yet I hope that it might serve as a vehicle to stir a sense stewardship: to conserve the wonder and beauty about us, which is now fraught with unhappy change and threatened loss.
