We are in our 1st week of MFW Rome to Reformation. One of the activities this week was to make a Roman tablet like school children used in Roman times. The book gives instructions using corrugated cardboard or in the Roman Empire book they suggested using balsal wood I wanted something a little simpler. We used $1 unfinished wood frames from Michael's and non drying clay I think it was $3.59 for 4 colors which worked perfect for us. My father-in-law cut out some lightweight wood to fit in the frames, I used hot glue to secure them although wood glue may be better I was finishing them up last minute so hot glue worked best for me. We then gently pressed the modeling clay into the frame and used a playdough rolling pin to make it smooth. Make sure you save the little dowel used to prop up the frame, we sharpened them and used them as the stylus. We also used old gift cards cut in half to smooth out the clay after writing on it. The kids decorated the frames with markers and have been enjoying them all day. The tutorial included in the curriculum is for a diptych or double-sided tablet. You could easily use two frames and drill holes then add twine to make a double-sided tablet. We were originally going to this for the older two but when the little ones saw the clay, I tossed the idea out and just let them each make one.

I can't believe we've already completed Week 3!! MFW 1st Grade has been awesome thus far. I wanted to share our ABC Scroll with everyone. Please feel free to ask questions if you have any. Rainbow finishing up coloring the pictures... Ladybug wanted to color, too. Almost done... We glued together the pages and attached the dowels with Scotch tape. All ready to Rock n' Roll! (pun intended) The Finished Product! It looks legit to me! Rainbow wanted to show off her ABC Scroll...she's so proud of it! She insisted I share this one...for dramatic effect, I'm sure. We used workboxes to organize the assignments in Kindergarten. It worked very well for us, but I did want to make some changes to the basic layout when moving on to 1st Grade. (Watch for later posts to go into more detail about why/how to use workboxes, how we organized K, and why my family uses My Father's World as our homeschooling curriculum.) I first got the idea for the grid style from http://www.homeschoolcreations.net/2010/07/our-new-workbox-system-workbook-weekly/ but I waited to implement it with first grade. Upon re-reviewing the site, I noticed she mentioned this site. http://ginger-snap-shots.blogspot.com/2009/08/if-at-first-you-dont-succeed.html I used this idea and modified it for me. MFW (My Father's World) is fairly repetitive for each day of the week so I thought a grid for each day would work well. Note: I labeled them Day One - Day Five, versus Monday - Friday because I didn't want us to miss a day of school for field trips, dr. appointments, etc, and then be working on the wrong 'day'. Yes, I'm somewhat OCD. 1st Daily Grid - Day One There are Velcro dots on both sides of the cards. When the workbox is complete my son turns over the card. Partially Completed Day All White = A Completed Day The Week I try to do my school planning every Saturday morning. So I like the idea of loading all the workboxes for the coming week all at one time; while I am already looking at what is upcoming. Also, this grid allows the cards to stay on the day it is likely to appear again. This saves me from having to load the whole day one card at a time from another location (what I did with K). Now I simply flip it face up and make adjustments as needed. Also, you can see quite a few of the workboxes are pictures of actual items. I found that 1st does not require a lot of bins instead I could assign homes for several items. I'm trying to take snippets of what I am doing. So it will take me several blog posts to review all of the setup. Welcome to our Weekly MFW 1st Grade Posts (we are using the first edition)! If you haven't already, be sure to check out our daily school routine and curriculum choices here. We are almost all better from our sickness and have been filling our days with school, giggles, and lots of cuddles. The weather here has been up and down, and we have tried to go outside when possible. I'm not sure who is looking forward to warmer weather more, the kiddos or me! Here's what we did MFW 1st Grade~Week 4! Calendar/Weather Chart: Yay for a new month! Ladybug decided on a "Rainbow Theme" for coloring her calendar and chart. Check out these adorable weather charts/calenders here Bible Bible: Our Proverb for the week is Proverbs 21:23 ("He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity). We discussed using our mouths to speak kind and helpful words. Ladybug and Buddy liked this song by Steve Green; and it went well with the Proverb. It's an oldie, but very cute! Ladybug and Buddy giggled while they tried to hold their tongues and sing! On day 2 (beginning in week 3) of this week, Ladybug copied the Proverb on a handwriting sheet. Click here for a cute handwriting practice sheet! We also did a Bible Activity to help Ladybug and Buddy understand who the real author of the Bible is (God). Side Note: Most MFW 1st Grade activities (that we've done) take little preparation. This is helpful when you have young children and active babies!! Pumpkin, our sweet, active, socks don't have to match, Baby Grammar: This week, we've started learning long vowels. The first day, Ladybug was a little confused. I think because she has many long vowel sight words memorized (from Reading). But after some review games (helpful games in teacher manual) and making sure she understood the long vowel "rules", we were able to move on. That's the beauty of homeschooling, isn't it? Being able to move at our children's learning pace, stop when they've hit a "snag", and watch them grasp and master the hurdle. There is nothing more wonderful than being apart of that process! Ladybug's MFW 1st Grade Workbook Page (Week 4)! Also, as part of her phonics, Ladybug created a book called "Animal Tales". She enjoyed reading/writing/illustrating the sentences each day! I laminated each page and used two book rings. Ladybug requested ribbon. Here's a few of Ladybug's pages. Math: We are using Complete Book of Math (CBOM). It's part of MFW 1st Grade curriculum. We are slowly working our way through. The reason: Ladybug likes to color.every.cute.picture.in.her.math.book. This slows down our "progress", but I feel she is very advanced in Math at this point. We also get a good dose of Math from our Classical Conversations Group (she can skip count all the way to the 15's!!...as in 15,30,45,60...etc). Ladybug working on her CBOM Book Closer look of a CBOM Page Science: We are enjoying the Science Books that are included with MFW 1st. This week we are studying trees in our "Things Outdoors" book. Unfortunately, the weather here has been on the cold side. We are hoping in the next few days to finish with our Science part. Ladybug and Buddy have been learning how to figure the age of a tree, and have already picked out the perfect tree trunk to investigate. There is a beautiful birch tree outside our dining room window. We've learned fascinating things about birch trees this week!! For instance, the most popular and well-known uses for birch wood are birch-bark canoes and indoor basketball court floors. A fully grown birch tree can produce over 1 million seeds in a year. Who knew?!? We are also watching our beans (from week 3). Lady bug and Buddy draw a picture of the changes they see in the beans every few days. I'll share more about that in the next few weeks. Our Kidney Beans ~~Day 3~~ Usborne Science Book Week 4 has went by fast. We are enjoying MFW 1st Grade and look forward to next week!

I'm so thankful to God for the 31 years he has given me, for my godly husband and children. I was excited to spend the day with my family. It was great end to the week! Here's what we did for MFW 1st Grade ~~Week 8~~ Bible: Our Proverbs for this week is Proverbs 12:22 ("The Lord detest lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful"). We discussed that we are to always be truthful and do the right thing, and Ladybug copied the Proverbs on Day 2 of this week. This week Ladybug began reading in her Bible Reader and drawing in her Bible Notebook. Ladybug's Bible Reader For our Bible activity, we learned that BC stands for before Christ and AD means Anno Domini (Latin for years after Jesus was born). Grammar: This week we did not do much of the student workbook pages. Two of the days, we did the Bible Reader and Notebook. It was a nice change! Ladybug did learn long vowel i spelled igh (as in night), and long vowel i spelled y (as in why). Ladybug's workbook Math: We are using the Complete Book of Math (recommended by MFW). This week we focused on addition! Page from the Complete Book of Math Science: This week we discussed "The Beach" and "Waves". We would love to be on the beach right now, but that's not possible. So we brought the beach to our home! Ladybug and Buddy's grandmother collects seashells. She was happy to share her collection! Our Seashell Collection One afternoon, Ladybug and Buddy spent over an hour observing the shells. With a magnifying glass and a small flashlight in hand, they carefully looked at each shell. Ladybug mentioned how each shell is unique and different. What a great reminder that God creates us unique and in His own image! We used our Draw Write Now Book (Book 6: Animals and Habitats-On Land, Pond, River and Ocean) to look at animals who live on the beach. Our pet hermit crab, Grassy, got to "visit" the beach too! We also made our own ocean so we could observe waves. It was easy and fun! Just save a 2 liter bottle (or you could any size plastic bottle). Fill with a little water and add food coloring. Then add cooking oil. I used vegetable oil (any cooking oil should work). I filled the bottle with about 1/3 of cooking oil. It really doesn't take much. Here's what our "ocean" looked like. The dark blue is the water and light blue is the oil. Ladybug and Buddy added seashells to their ocean Most waves are made by the wind. When the wind blows harder, it pushes the ripples until they become waves. This was a fun, easy school week for us. We were all thankful for that. We even made a trip to a nearby river (since we learned about that last week), and we planted a few flowers! We learned that this River goes through several states and meets the Atlantic Ocean Ladybug loved planting flowers! And Strawberries! Buddy planted cucumbers! Seeing this picture brings happy tears and a grateful heart. Buddy asked to stroll Pumpkin after we planted flowers. He strolled Pumpkin a few times and when I looked over, he had stopped and bent down to give him a kiss. I am so thankful for the amazing responsibility we have to raise these boys to know God and make Him known. Have a Great Week!

MFW: Reformation to Rome Curriculum Organization We have moved on to 5th Grade and will also be combining 1st grade (Learning God's Story) to our school year. K is excited to learn all about Rome, she really loves history. D is happy to move on to 1st grade, he says he is grown now. Below I will be showing you how I organized our new school area and the curriculum for the year. Also will add each week we complete below. Pray this will help someone out there. ROME TO REFORMATION (5th Grade) LEARNING GOD'S STORY (1st Grade) The Curriculum we will be using this semester and we will also be using a few books from our 4th grade curriculum. I've organized the ROME TO REFORMATION CURRICULUM by sections using tabs in the notebook and teacher's manual by weeks. First part of the notebook is cursive worksheets, second part are the student worksheets, then the art cards in the zipper pocket, and at the end the art cards. K will have a separate notebook for her to store all her works. For D's LEARNING GOD'S STORY CURRICULUM I already had it ready since I used it for K when she went through 1st grade. The teacher's manual and student notebook I divided it by sections with tabs by week. After the student worksheets is the memory verse worksheets, and then the art cards. Laminated all the pictures of the TIMELINE after coloring them. I cut them out and on the back wrote what week each picture is for. Got the timeline from Tasha Wiginton blog, since we don't have the wall space. Printed the timeline pages (scroll) on card stock and then laminated them, after which I taped them together to form a book. Placed the pictures in a zipper pouch to secure them. Some of the resources we will be using for our Bible time. D is using Hooked on Phonics and K will be using Spectrum Language Arts and All About Reading (not pictured) for their Language Arts and Spelling. Also will be working on cursive handwriting with both of them. For math K will continue to use Singapore math and D will use the Math workbook that comes with his curriculum and the pattern animals worksheets. Placed expanded numbers (which D will be using), Peter the Wolf cd, and memory verse I placed in zipper pouched, and we will be listening to several cd's too. Some of our SCIENCE books pictured here for K and D. Here are some of our HISTORY books pictured. Several of our reading alouds, pretty excited to start these. Top left picture holds the folders for the week and week ahead, found this at Michaels craft store, bottom left picture shows our library bookcase, several bins that holds our stamps, colored rice & pasta, and a few of our sensory manipulatives. Next to the bins are two rolling shelves that hold all of our office supplies, paint supplies, markers, alphabet materials, and extra school supplies. Right picture is a closer look of our library, we do have a lot more books just need to find a new bookshelf. In front is our awesome 10 year old puppy who always has to be near us, why we have a bed in our school room. On the top picture is our game shelf, HP printer under that hold all the Hooked on Phonics boxes, and the brown shelf holds all the curriculum books and notebooks. Bottom picture is where all our school materials is housed, manipulatives, pencils, etc... Also our keyboard is on this side which we will start practicing on and adding the famous recorder to the mix. School room is in the basement, which has been a great blessing for us. We finally have a place to store all of our school materials. Top picture is our school room without the table in the middle, lots of space. Middle picture is how it will look when we have the table and chairs out. The bottom picture is the second half of the basement, which is the game room. In the game room we also have a mini fridge and a snack bar on top of that. Next to that is our mini file cabinet and on top of that houses the puppets. Our laundry room is also in the basement next to the mini fridge. Here are our pets (my other children). Top left is our puppy Zeus, top right is our bearded dragon Larry Boy, bottom left is Coco our Cockatiel, middle picture is 4 goldfish, and bottom right is our 3 dwarf frogs. We are excited for our new journey this school year. Below I will be adding each week we finish our lesson. Praying for a smoother year compared to our last one. The kids have worked so hard and still are working hard especially in their reading. New year, new curriculum, new hope for all of us. Student workbook Bible Notebook and Reader Nature Journal UPDATE 3/2014: Since writing this we have stopped using "Drawing with Children" and use "Draw, Write, Now" Books for art. We also have stopped supplementing with First Language Lessons and just use the reading program in Teacher's Manual and phonic readers for Language Arts. First Language Lesson is good L.A. curriculum, but my boys were not reading yet so we needed to focus on phonics and the Manual and Workbook were plenty.
We started teaching the 4 year old class at our church this past week. They are sweetest and silliest group of kiddos. I love this age group. We hear all sorts of stories (good ones...it's church!). My favorite part is when they tell me all they know about our topic each week. They always surprise

Another great week using MFW Learning God's Story! We did a few art projects, made some yummy chipotle ranch, and read about several types of trees. Warning: This post contains affiliate links. Memory Verse: Proverbs 21:23- "He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity." This verse was a great one for our whole family to focus on this week. We've had a lot happen recently, and it was a good reminder to watch what we say. Squirrely Girl and Miss Bear have continued to do well with the memorization, and are relating day to day life back to our memory verses and bible stories. It makes my heart happy whenever I hear them pray for God's help in these areas! We've also started doing a little something with our memory verses this week. I love the CM Scripture memory system, and we made our own simple version. You can read about it here. Language Arts: Squirrely Girl reading her previous phonics lessons. Squirrely Girl has continued with the MFW phonics. I thought it was odd that they included -ing, -ang, and -ung together, because I thought it would be confusing. She didn't seem to have any problems, though! Her handwriting has already improved dramatically the past 5 weeks. Miss Bear is working on her ABC handwriting sheets as well as number words sheets. I used a highlighter to make her a copywork sheet for this weeks memory verse, and I've already seen improvement in her handwriting as well. Math: This is week 2 of working numbers and counting. This was needed more for Miss Bear, but Squirrely Girl had a good review with larger numbers. She also used some leaves, rocks, and seeds we found on our nature walk to work on addition, which was great practice. Science: After reading the recommended reading for trees, we did several art projects, a failed science experiment, and read in our Fun with Nature about several species of trees. <br /> We've also continued to examine our beans that are sprouting. (We didn't soak them until Monday! We had a lot going on last week!) I'm not adding that stuff until we finish it, but Bubba has loved looking at the beans. Kids were all amazed to see the tiny plant starting to grow! Art: One of our art activities was these tree ring paintings. I put several shades of paint onto a plate, and the girls used their foam sponge brushes to get some paint. They then pressed the sponge onto their paper and twirled it around, giving the great tree ring effect. We all had a lot of fun with these! We also made these My Years in Tree Rings pages. We had talked about how trees grow a ring each year. We then made these pictures with a ring for each year they'd been alive, and things they thought were important for each year. Lastly, the kids made these tree crafts. All three of them love when I tape contact paper onto the sliding glass doors. This is something that even Bubba can mostly do himself. Handicrafts: Squirrely Girl started working on her first needlepoint project this week. You can find these projects at most craft stores, and I'm sure Amazon has them as well. How was your week? Last week we did some fun things with learning the seasons. Most of our learning came from our small group books. I use Reading A-Z, so I can make the themes fit what I want usually. And it did PERFECTLY! After a few days of really learning about seasons, we did a craft idea on an apple tree. They kids should REALLY know the apple tree, right?! So that's what I like to do. I got the picture of the tree from {THIS} post. It's a JPEG download (the link is in the comments on her blogpost). After I printed it, I just used good old fashion white out to cover the season names. They colored the tree brown, then cute apart the tree. (She has them already divided up) They put the pieces back together on the paper and then I had them label the seasons, IN ORDER. Once they had them in order (they could start with whatever season they wanted), I called them back to the table to do their painting. And now they hang in our room - and I love them! Another activity they did was to write their book of seasons. I suggested they talked about the weather, the plants, what they see..... Some were a little more detailed in their writing than others... but hey, their illustrations show me they know it! Leaf Litter!! Our phrase we learned that week from our Scholastic News. I love it! We really talked about the trees being bare in the winter.... you know, in other states besides Florida. If you want this little book, you can click {HERE} to download it. Then, to end the week. they did a "My Favorite Season" writing, where they had to write to explain why...using what they like to do, what the weather was like, what the plants did and if the days were long and hot or short and cold. And we worked on having a closing statement. They drew what they would see if they looked out their window at home. What would be going on outside?? Then, depending on which season they picked, they glued it to that color background. You can grab this activity {HERE}. Living in FL, I really like stressing about the season since we don't really have seasons here. That is the one of the FEW downfalls of living in FL.
