Another two day snowstorm. This sure is the winter of the snow. I think the sheep are pretty much ready for it to be over. When I look at these photos, it is easy to forget the snow, ice, sleet and unfriendly weather conditions. When my camera captures the moment and holds it in a digital file, I will remember back to the moment of the storm. For most of you these will just be pretty pictures of sheep in snow - as they should be. But what I will remember is being farm-bound, luckily with heat and lights, four lambs in the house, and the general anxiety that lambing season brings. Along with the snow comes snow days and an excuse to bake bread, knit and stay put. The photos here are of the yearling ewes in lambs that are in the snow covered pasture just in front of our house. It is easy for me to get out there and take photos - no driving and not a long walk. These photos were taken Tuesday and Wednesday during the storm. Thank goodness these sheep (which were born last January and February) aren't lambing yet - they will probably lamb much later when the grass is green. Snow covered mounds of sheep.... wish I could have taken them from the front but I was too lazy to wade through the several feet of snow to shoot it from the other side. Didn't want to risk losing my camera in the snow either! These two looked happy chewing their cuds. Look closely - she has icicles on her ears! This ewe was so still, I thought she might be dead. But she wasn't - when I shoved the gate open for more photos, she got up and shook herself off. Sheep are all about the food.... snow or not. This is Olympia eating - Olympia as in last spring's postcards and "Olympia's Felted Knit & Crochet Flowers!" (HINT, HINT - great idea for Valentine's Knitting - pattern available on my Shop Page here!) She is a mature ewe now and most likely will lamb in a month or so. Love this photo of the brown ewe with the snow falling in front of its face. Some other brown ewes. And this Border Leicester ewe. She is gorgeous. They're just rolling their eyes at me. Sheep with the garden shed behind. Here's what it looks like in the summer. Our house looks so cozy with the orange door and the smoke coming out of the chimney. Must have looked similar to this back 200 years ago. They say it was built in 1751. It isn't as easy for me to get the barn where the lambs are being born today. It is five miles from our house and with all the snow, sleet and ice coming down, I decided to stay put and feed the bottle lambs and hang out with Julia since school has been shuttered. She will be going to school forever with all the snow days they have had! The Farmer left early in the a.m. and we haven't seen him yet. That is probably good news since if a lamb wasn't good, he would have headed up here so we could try to bring it back to health. Looking forward to when we see real blooms on the hydrangeas again! Stay warm everyone!

I'm feeling like a broken record. Lambs, lambs, lambs, and ecru colored wool, brown mud and muck, straw, hay, and winter gray. When I look back on my blog which has become a record of my life and all the lives here at our farm, the winter months are full of these colors. I can't wait until spring breaks around here and we see something else. Busy week here. I had a photo shoot on Monday with the team of Gridley + Graves, Interior Photographers. It was a fun day watching them work and making the photos. Real professionals for sure. They shot tethered which was interesting to watch and be part of. I'll let you all know when the magazine hits. Lovely people and lots of fun stories shared. They brought me tulips - well actually they weren't for me - they were for the photos. But they left them for us. Nice to have some color in the house. I don't buy flowers so I do crave spring when I can find bouquets outside. Lambs are still coming. Four sets of twins on Monday. Hope you all are having a good week.
One of the most fun excursions during our trip to Scotland was a sheep herding demonstration. It was so interesting to watch the sheep herder call out commands to his Border Collies, who take their job very seriously. And there were puppies ! He's holding one and there is another one just off to the left. I took a video also which I will upload when a better internet connection is available... fast internet is hard to come by in Scotland !
It is reported that the Prophet Mohamed (pbuh) said, (In a dream) I saw myself following a herd of black sheep. Then a group of white sheep came (and mixed with the black sheep) until they (the white sheep) became so many that the black sheep could no longer be seen in the herd of sheep." Abu Bakr, the companion of the Prophet (pbuh) and the interpreter of dreams, said, "Oh Messenger of Allah. As for the black sheep, they are the Arabs. They will accept Islam and become many. The white sheep are the non-Arab Persians, etc. They will accept Islam and become so many that the Arabs will not be noticed amongst them." The Prophet Mohamed (pbuh) then said that an angel had interpreted the dream the same way. Zaid ibn Aslam related that the prophet (SAWS) saw a vision and told his companions about it. He said, "I saw a group of black sheep and a group of white sheep then mixed with the black sheep. I interpreted it to mean that the non-Arab Persians will enter Islam and then share with you your genealogy and your wealth." The companions became surprised by what he (SAWS) said. Then one said, "The non-Arab Persians will enter our land, Oh Messenger of Allah?!" The Prophet (SAWS) then said, "Yes. By He Who Has my soul in His Hand, if the religion was hanging on the distant star, men from the non-Arab Persians would reach it and the luckiest of them would be the people of Faris. The Prophet Mohamed spoke the truth and this is why there is this misconception concerning the appearance of the original Arabs. This is why the original dark-skinned Arabs are not clearly visible today. http://www.savethetruearabs.com/
