I was very much inspired by a post I saw a long time ago from An Art Room Filled with Fauves for this project. I loved how simple and how many times students got to practice their figure drawing. Here is how I approached the lesson. We started by studying our mini figure models and moving our body. I'm always inspired by Rina from K-6 Art for activities like this. She get's her kids moving all the time. This group loved trying to challenge their pose. There were several parts that the students had to make to complete this project. First the tracer. We used a heavier tagboard to draw a figure using shapes. We had already practiced a lot so the kids had it down. The tough part of this project was the cutting of this tracer. I would say that 90% of the students were very successful. There were some tape repairs and I did a 'teacher check' (and in some cases teacher help) on some of them because this was the base of the rest of this project. The second part of this project I had them draw a horizon line and place their figure on it. They had to color this figure in using black crayon. I would have also had them darken in the horizon line if I was to do this one again. Then, they drew the outline on a white sheet of paper and filled int he details. They outlined and colored with crayon again. This was something to remind the students when they were doing the two final steps. Be sure to have the figure and shadow facing the same way. As the students cut and glued the projects on, we talked about placement of the figure to the shadow. You want to make sure that the figure is close and overlapping the shadow a bit. You also want to make sure that your figure is on or below the horizon line. And again, make sure that your figure and your shadow are going the same direction. I love the simplicity of these cute projects. There were small ways that students were able to show their creativity such as the image below. I have a second post to come on an experiment with this project that allowed for more creativity. Below is about as 'out of the box' students were able to go with this project.

Preschool students made mittens this week using colored squares and glue. Next they painted the background and added snowflakes! With temperatures in the single digits this week - it was a great day to make mittens! Kindergarten students created a winter forest. These birch trees and red cardinals make a great addition to our hallway walls. Our birds were made using 3 simple shapes - circle, oval, and triangle. The birch trees were made using 4 long white stripes of paper. The last step was to add snow using a q-tip... 1st grade students learned about weaving and created these fun alligators/lizards . Second grade students drew themselves and their shadows. We discussed shadows and what silhouettes are. I have to comment on have some of these second graders are super good at designing clothes - fashion creative!!! 3rd grade students painted our state bird, the cardinal. 4th grade students used oil pastels, construction paper, and glitter for this mixed media artwork Fifth grade students learned about artist Claus Oldenburg, an american artist who is known for his pop art sculptures. We discussed his "Burger" sculpture and then students got to be creative an design their own burgers. They could add anything they wanted to their burger, as long as it was food. Some of these have some crazy things in them - crabs, pizza, cupcakes, fried eggs, candy, fish, and spaghetti.. This project was a mixed media collage. We used yarn, felt, tissue paper, and construction paper.

Ruby is lately getting a little obsessed with pirates - X marks the spot and treasure maps and all that, so I thought it would be cute to make our own pirate treasure. It's a simple craft, and Ruby managed most of the steps herself. You'll need: Card (or flat plastic from packaging) PVA glue Gold or silver acrylic paint Black ink or shoe polish Begin by drawing circles for your coin shapes. Find something of suitable size to draw around, then cut out. Once you've cut out your circles, draw some basic shapes on. I just used circles and crosses. Then using the PVA glue, draw over the detail. You want to create a raised effect, and this is where using plastic can be better than card, which sometimes soaks up the glue. If this is the case, you may need to allow to dry and go over again. You can also use the squirty glitter glue pens for this as they give a good relief texture. Leave to dry thoroughly, then pain front and back with metallic paint. Finally, 'age' your treasure by rubbing on a little black ink or shoe polish and buffing. Shiver me timbers, you're all done! I’ve decided to finally buckle down and apply myself and attack one of the test questions looming over me! I am still chugging along on the Senior level of the GCW Master Weavers program, well chugging could be an exaggeration, moseying may be a better word. The Senior level has test questions #21 – 30, and this one is for question #29 entitled Colour and Weave. The question is in four sections. Part A is a briefly written piece about Colour and Weave. Part B is a briefly written piece about Shadow Weave. Part C is weave a sample of either Shadow Weave or Colour and Weave on 4 or more shafts. Part D is a record and draft of the woven piece. Sounds easy right! This is a single pattern repeat of my chosen pattern. I decided to make it easy on myself and do a 4 shaft Shadow Weave. I chose to do the piece in navy and turquoise 2/8 unmercerized cotton. My colour choice had two criteria, the first being that I wanted a strong contrast and the second is that it had to be out of my stash. I've only put on two yards and plan to get it right the first time (or two).The rules state that I must weave it a minimum of 12" x 18" finished and may not use floating selvedges (drat!).This piece need not be an original pattern so this draft came from Marion Powell’s book titled 1000(+) Patterns in 4, 6, and 8 Harness Shadow Weave. This book is without a doubt one of the best resources for Shadow Weave that I have found, I really recommend it. Here are a few facts about Shadow Weave. Shadow weave is usually set on a twill sequence threading, it is not a true twill, but rather a plain weave with two thread skips, which because of the use of two colors, one dark, one light, alternating in both warp and weft, make shadows between the changes of the hatching. Shadow weave threads run at a 45 degree angle with distinct dark row alternating with a distinct light row with the edge threads interwoven with each other in a definite feather stitch pattern. If you use an ascending progression a dark thread precedes a light thread; descending is the reverse. Shadow weave is a firm durable weave which is completely reversible. This is my guilty purchase for the year, OK maybe not my only guilty purchase, but the latest one anyway! It arrived just like this, nothing but the clear plastic wrap and my name on the side, and it was just abandoned in my carport - they must have been sure it was ment for me...I have been eyeing a steam press for a couple of years and was hoping to buy one second hand, but one never appeared on any of the sites I searched. I found this one on the internet but always talked myself out of this rather large purchase, until Ngaire found it discounted $60.00 at Costco! It was meant to be I guess! I’ve always felt that my pressing is my weak spot, I just can’t seem to press hard enough, so hopefully this will fix that problem. By the way the table cloth the steam press is siting on was made by my mother in the 1950's and it a real treasure! This press has settings for different types of fibres, from synthetic to linen, so it should fit all my needs.And it has lots of steam jets! Apparently it only needs 4 seconds in contact with the fabric to press it perfectly. I’m looking forward to giving it a try and seeing if it really performs as I hope it does. Now where, oh where do I put it!
