Teach point of view like a pro! A complete unit provides a slideshow, worksheets, and assessment for identifying first and third person perspectives. Activities were specially created for fourth grade students. Open the previews to take a closer look at the bundle and individual resources. Direct Instruction with an Interactive Slideshow Teach first and third person perspectives with confidence. An interactive PowerPoint presents the concepts. Then it displays excerpts from children’s books. Kids raise fingers to indicate first or third person. Finally, they guess the name and author of the book. Engagement is now at an all-time high! Kids learn to look for pronouns. First person is the one who’s doing the talking. The narrator uses I, me, we, and us. Second person is the one to whom the speaker is talking. The speaker uses you. Third person is outside the conversation and uses he, she, him, her, they, or them. Stories are generally written in first or third person. Look for pronouns to determine the author’s perspective. One by one, eleven short excerpts from children’s books are displayed. Kids hold up one or three fingers to indicate their choice. (This is great for formative assessment!) The class discusses clues (especially pronouns) that indicate the perspective. Finally, let students name the book’s title and author. In no time at all, this mini lesson has kids identifying the point of view and supporting their choice with evidence from the text. Afterwards, fourth grade students complete two exit tickets to show what they know. On the first worksheet, they analyze ten short passages. For first person perspective, they write “1.” If it’s told from a third person standpoint, they put “3.” For the second activity, kids read two longer passages. After telling the viewpoints, they explain with evidence from the text. Guided Practice, Independent Practice, and Assessment with Differentiated Passages These worksheets provide powerful point of view practice! Reach you teach with differentiated passages and a variety of activities. Fourth grade students identify first or third person and provide evidence from the text. Model the process. Read “Tree House,” an excerpt from Swiss Family Robinson, aloud. Discuss and annotate the text to indicate that the narrator uses first person pronouns. Additionally, he refers to others by name. If desired, model answering questions or writing a paragraph. Suggested annotations and responses are included. Next, offer practice with four one-page passages*, each differentiated for three reading levels. “Alice and the Caterpillar” from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland “Back to the Widow’s House” from The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin “The Sea Chest” from Treasure Island “The Journey to Oz” from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz For each passage, you can choose from a variety of worksheets. For the simplest option, kids circle the author’s perspective at the bottom on the passage. For the most complex, they write a paragraph to identify the author’s standpoint and explain it with evidence from the text. You can also choose from several middle-of-the-road activities, such as answering questions or analyzing a character’s viewpoint. Assess students’ skills at constructing responses about point of view. A rubric provides criteria for paragraphs. You can use it as formative assessment for each assignment, as well as summative assessment for the final story. To extend learning, ask kids to write stories from different perspectives. A variety of activities are included. The unit includes everything you need for a complete learning cycle. Lesson plans Slideshow (included as a PowerPoint presentation and Google Slides) Lesson plans Pronouns reference guide 2 worksheets, or exit tickets Opening story with modeling 4 differentiated reading passages A variety of corresponding activities and worksheets Rubric Resources can be used in a variety of ways: Whole-class reading instruction Test prep Small group work, remediation, or tutoring Homework Homeschool Your students will love this unit – and you will too! The interactive slideshow really engages kids. Finger signals ensure that everyone participates, and they love guessing the titles and authors of the books. Differentiated texts let you meet the needs of all students in your classroom. A variety of worksheets let you pick and choose. Activities address the intent of your standards. For example, if you teach CCSS RL.4.6, Texas TEKS LA.4.10.E, or Virginia SOL.R.4.5.e, you can rest assured that students will master point of view. You can choose the format that works best for you. The slideshow is available as a PowerPoint presentation or Google Slides. A PDF provides a traditional pencil and paper worksheets; Easel Activities or forced Google Slides offer digital versions.
