Part of the port town of Oban, as seen from the Caledonian-MacBrayne ferry returning to Oban from the isle of Mull in the inner Hebrides. The Colosseum-esue McCaig’s Tower looks down over the town from Battery Hill, with the Columba Hotel on the waterfront. The stack of the Oban Distillery, and a bit of the distillery itself, is visible on the right. This was a return to Oban of a different sort, too. My wife and I spent our first rainy night in Scotland on our first trip there nearly 20 years ago at the Columba Hotel in Oban, in one of the turret rooms, while waves crashed into the pier from the storm. We had gone there so that I could pay a visit to the distillery, in no small part because I had given my groomsmen monogrammed flasks filled with Oban 14 when we got married. Amazingly, we completely missed McCaig’s Tower on that trip–didn’t even realize it was there until we were watching some Scotland travel programs while planning our most recent trip! This trip, we stayed outside Oban at a B&B about 20 minutes away, but came into Oban for meals, shopping, and our boat tour of the islands of Mull, Iona, and Staffa. We didn’t stop into the distillery this time (while I like Oban just fine, it’s not my favorite single malt, and I had already purchased my import limit at this point in the trip), but I did get to try some of the local beers and seafood. Nikon D7000 w/Nikkor 18-300mm @ 95mm, 1/180s @ ƒ/5.6, ISO100. Color finishing in Nik Viveza and Aperture. I probably should have stopped down the aperture a bit more here and compensated with a slightly higher ISO, but I’m still pretty happy with the shot.

Prince (my beloved car) and I decided to head out for the day and went in search of Oban… This is not the colleseum, but rather McCaig’s Tower, built in 1897 by local banker John Stuart McCaig, with the aim of providing work for local stonemasons, and being a lasting monument to the McCaig family. ~ …
