This is a doll quilt (or little wall hanging) I made, using a folded log cabin pattern. Oscar our Dachshund, was thinking about joining my doll I guess! It is also often called: the 'Manx log cabin', originated from the Isle of Man. Fiona of this blog post here wrote a very clear tutorial and nice story of it's history, worth reading! I added a practical little step to this tutorial. Like a regular log cabin you start with a square and add strips of fabric in a chosen width. Only before stitching the next strip, you fold the sewn strip back (mostly 2/3 of the width, minus the seam allowance). So far the same tutorial like Fiona's. What I did to make it easier to iron the fold in the strip is: I used a template (made out of a cereal box) with the desired width. In my case my strips were cut to 3,5 cm (very narrow, you would prefer to make wider strips). After sewing with a 0,5 cm seam allowance, 3 cm was left. 2/3 of 3 cm is 2 cm. So the width of the fold is 2 cm as is the template is. Here the fold is ironed down and you can take a peak under the fold. a few blocks done There is no need to quilt this, which I think is a great advantage! To join the blocks you work like a quilt as you go method ( just picked a clear tutorial by Leanne and Marci with pictures) only in this case you don't have to worry about the batting. The things I learned is to: 1st pay attention with what thread you sew, because it shows on the back. Secondly how you start and stop your sewing line, this will also show. And thirdly only sew the logs length without the seam allowances at the beginning and the end (like in the improvised drawing above). I'm referring to the last rows because this will make it easier to sew the blocks together. Sewing the background squares together I chose to do this by hand, probably the only method without sewing all through the front. The little quilt is finished with a little binding. I used mostly woven fabrics and linens. Also lots of Japanese woven fabric scraps. I love the feeling of all these types of fabrics, lots of texture! I first saw an old quilt with this pattern at a friends house in Maryland (USA). Her family called it: 'a toe catcher log cabin', a funny name, I think, but very understandable if you look at all those folds! Oscar thinking: She smells nice...may be I could try something here.... This is the beautiful folded log cabin quilt made by Grandma Langille that Edith brought for show and share at our last Guild meeting. I just love all the scrappy colours. It inspired me to make two folded log cabin blocks but mine pale in comparison. And here's a closeup Her quilt was made with approximately quarter inch folds where my two blocks were made with half inch folds. Here's an even closer look at a block. The other night at quilt guild one of our members was showing some antique quilts made by her grandmothers. A folded log cabin quilt caught everyone's interest. I will post a picture of it here once I have her permission. I went looking for the instructions on how to make a folded log cabin block and found several that used strips of fabric folded in half, but if you lifted the folded edges you would have been able to see the stitching and this particular quilt you could not. I finally found this wonderful tutorial by Ice Bear Quilts called a Manx Log Cabin. It calls for jelly roll strips or 2.5" strips of fabric and the folds come out at half an inch. Doing some math, I believe the antique quilt must have used 1.25" strips which came out at one quarter inch folds! So if you really wanted to, you could cut your jelly roll strips in half to work in one quarter inch scale. I won't go into all the details of how it's made as the tutorial is really good and gives the history of the block as well. I started with foundation fabric which I ironed on the diagonal as instructed but I also drew some pencil lines every inch to help keep me square as I went along. Here is the centre square and the first log added. I folded the corner back so you can see that there is one inch of fabric including the one quarter inch seam allowance on the back of the fold and one and one-half inches of fabric on the front fold. If you wanted your fabric to go further, you could probably take a shallower fold and still get the same effect. Here are two completed rounds. Here are three completed rounds. Here are nine completed rounds plus a tenth row attached in the regular log cabin method. Since the final folded log cabin row does not have another folded row on top of it you can see the full width of it. I plan on making a pineapple quilt with this fabric and had an extra jelly roll on hand to make some cushions to go with the quilt and decided to try out this technique. The second cushion top will sew up even more quickly since I cut the strips for it as I worked on this one. So this was my Jelly Roll sewing for National Jelly Roll Day!

Today was the inaugural Bigfork Quilts, Etc. class: Folded Log Cabin. This is the second time I've taught this class and it's fun to do and to see the results. The fabrics used and patterns created vary greatly from student to student. This is the most colorful of the group. And this block is going to be a part of an African theme. Look at how the strip print pulls these blocks together. These blocks are created from batik jelly roll strips cut down to 2 1/4". Lots of texture and color variety! If you decide to try this technique, I highly recommend "Folded Log Cabin Quilts" by Sarah Kaufman. The gallery of quilts makes it worth the price of the book for inspiration alone. I will pass along that trying the technique does take a little unconditioning of the quilter's way of piecing. As one student put it, it's an upside down and inside out way of quilting (that's about what she said LOL). Try something new and give yourself the opportunity to play with color to see what results you come up with. Blessings, Karri
