Another day, another collection of fascinating discoveries from medieval book historian Erik Kwakkel who previously introduced the internet to his observations on the history of doodles, color theory, and rare forms of bookbinding. Kwakkel has also been investigating how bookmakers found creative solutions around damaged parchment—thin membranes of cow and sheepskin used for printing books between the fifth and thirteenth centuries before the rise of paper. It is a fact of life that buildings, as they age, inevitably fall apart. We Americans are not quite comfortable with this. We like everything to be shiny and new: we like all our buildings and our interior finishes to have the smooth sameness of youth. But the Japanese have developed a way of dealing with this. They have, in fact, embraced the idea that sometimes fixing broken things can make them even better and more beautiful than when they were new.

Recount my experiments with the ancient art of Kintsugi. Sometimes we stow away our most prized things for fear of breaking them. Kintsugi breathes a new lease of life into cracked or damaged pieces. I encourage readers to try it for themselves, and to cast aside their fear of breakages: after all,
From the land of Wales. I studied costume design. This is all fuel for my fantasies. Used to be Casperdivine.

Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery using gold-infused lacquer to mend the broken bits back together. In doing so, this technique eschews the ever-elusive notion of perfection in favor of honoring the history of the object despite its perceived flaws. The marks of wear are seen as a sign of strength, valued as a record of events that took place during its lifespan to be honored accordingly as pieces that make up the whole. What was once broken is not lost. Oh, if we could only translate this beautiful philosophy to our writing!
Beauty isn’t just about looking good, it’s also about feeling good, and a recent report has found that we’re buying more products that support our need for simple pleasures and self-care.

Kintsugi is the century-old Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with Japanese lacquer (Urushi) dusted with powdered gold giving a new life to when otherwise items would be thrown away. In recent years this craftsmanship has been regarded as an important traditional art to influence on Modern art around the world. Philosophy Kintsugi express Wabi-Sabi philosophy, an embracing of imperfection, whilst appreciating artefact’s history and personal memories. Instead of disguising the damages and bringing them to the original state, Kintsugi emphasises the defects with gold, symbolising life.
