László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946), Maler, Fotograf, Bauhauslehrer und Gründer des »New Bauhaus« und der »School of Design« in Chicago war einer der ersten multimedial wirkenden Künstler, der Malerei, Skulptur, Fotografie, Film und Design als gleichwertige Kunstgattungen ausübte. Als einer der wichtigsten Protagonisten der Moderne setzte er mit seinen Werken Massstäbe, die bis in die heutige Zeit reichen.Von Walter Gropius 1923 als Nachfolger von Johannes Itten an das Bauhaus in Weimar berufen, zog László Moholy-Nagy mit diesem nach Dessau um, bevor er 1933 Nazi-Deutschland verliess und schliesslich 1937 in Chicago seine zweite Heimat fand. Sowohl als Lehrer als auch Künstler folgte er seiner revolutionären Vision, die künstlerische Tätigkeit in das alltägliche Leben einfliessen zu lassen und damit Kunst und Leben zu vereinen. Seinem radikalen experimentellen Ansatz folgend, keine ästhetische Hierarchie in seinen Arbeiten zuzulassen, bewegte sich Moholy-Nagy souverän zwischen Malerei, Fotografie und Film und definierte sich gleichzeitig als Maler und als Fotograf. Sensing the Future: Moholy-Nagy, Media and the Arts considers the impact of technologized modernity by exploring how it was addressed in the work of László Moholy-Nagy--artist, photographer, Bauhaus teacher and a keen advocate for the integration of technology and industry into the arts. Moholy-Nagy felt that people needed guidance to cope with a technologized, hyperstimulating environment, and broached ideas of immersion, interactivity and bodily participation, offering a critique of modern disembodiment.
