Hello Everyone, Today is a big day. This marks post number 1,000 for Sew'n Wild Oaks. I can't believe when I started blogging in 2008, it would take me this far. I can't believe that morning after morning, usually at or before the crack of dawn, I'm at the kitchen table in my jammies with coffee cup at hand. I sit and write about quilting and my daily life. First of all, I wasn't a quilt designer in 2008. I had just retired from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as a Geographic Information Systems Analyst. I started working at In Between Stitches just one day a week....every Monday. You know the phrase, "Will work for fabric." Well that was me. One thing led to another. The very supportive shop owners Leslie and Melissa, had me making shop samples, then I offered to design the quilt for a shop hop, and I became hooked on designing. I now have 17 patterns and a resource manual all under the Sew'n Wild Oaks name. (Insert confetti tossing here!) Blogging has opened up a whole new world for me. I've made and met so many blogging friends over the past six years from around the world. It has been an amazing experience and I treasure our friendships, our meeting, and our good times we've spent together. I also treasure that fact that morning after morning YOU, sit in your jammies and read, and comment back to me. I love to read your comments! They make my day and make me look forward to putting together another post. Half the time when I sit down to post, I have no clue what I'm going to say. Who knows what comes out of these typing fingers at 5am!! Some posts are better than others.....some write themselves......some are a struggle. Just like quilt blocks, you can't hit them all out of the ball park.....but you can try. To help me celebrate this momentous occasion, the kind and generous folks at Marcus Fabrics are donating a bundle of fabric for me to giveaway! The fabric is on it's way to my home as we speak. Hello Everyone, The House of Edgewood Lane quilt came home for a two-day visit this week. She has been on display and on the road with The Quilt House, a beautiful shop in Gardnerville, NV. Now she is on display at ThimbleCreek in Concord, CA. This is the first quilt I designed and it holds a very special place in my heart. I'll be teaching The House on Edgewood Lane at ThimbleCreek on Sept. 7th and Oct. 5th. It is a simple block and the applique isn't too intense! I like this quilt so much, that I think I need to make another one for ME! I rummaged through the magic fabric pie safes the other day and pulled out a good beginning for another quilt. I found some older Mistletoe Manor by Moda and combined it with the new Grace fabric line. Again, all of my required elements of stripes, checks, polka dots....but wait where's the plaid? Back to the magic cupboard to find some plaids. Today is day number #3 of the PICK FOUR book blog hop. creating memories one stitch at a time...
Hello Everyone, When I get up in the morning, I look forward to deciding which project I want to work on. Country Corners got the nod yesterday. I'm trying to get way ahead of everyone so I can post directions on time, the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is going to be the block for month #4, which I will post in August. You can beg, borrow or plead with me, and I will send the cutting directions to you if you really, really want them. I have quite a bit of fabric left over each month from my fabric packet. Which means the people who signed up for the program also have fabric left. So what to do?? How about cutting the leftovers into 1-1/2" strips and make some courthouse step blocks. It would end up looking something like this....a real scrappy sampler quilt. I have many more blocks to make, but I wanted to get a peek to see how this works for me. It works for me just fine! Those of you in the BOM program through In Between Stitches will have to augment fabrics from your stash. The program only includes the fabrics to make the different blocks, and not the final set. BUT you will be using every scrap of fabric from your monthly packets. There will also be some type of border. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. How about a border comprised of quilting components? By the end of this program, you will be able to make accurate components in your sleep....I hope. Soon, Lynn

Hello Everyone, Last night after finishing two sides of the binding, I tossed Heritage on the bed to get a good look at it in different light. Why is it the phone takes a better picture than my 'real' camera? It seemed as though I would never get all of the binding sewn on the quilt. Now for the hand stitching. I actually love to work on the binding. It is very relaxing and gives me a sense of completion. I guess I'm going to have to make another Heritage. One for traveling to shows and quilt shops and one for home. Mr. Joe likes this one a lot. The 'logs' in the quilt match the logs at the cabin. Two sides of the binding are done. I know I have to quit when the muscle in my arm starts to burn. It was on fire last night. Thank you all for your wonderful comments on my post yesterday. I will try to send all of you a personal thank you email today. Susie H. you leave the nicest comments but I can't get in touch with you since I don't have your email. Please contact me at [email protected] so I can thank you for all of your wonderful comments. That goes for everyone out there in blogland who is a "no-reply" status. Today I'm going to bind for an hour and write the pattern for an hour....repeat, repeat, repeat. Then maybe my arm won't fall off! In between my binding and computer work, I'll take Mazey for a walk in the woods. Mr. Joe knows that I won't use the $50 can of bear spray that he bought me. His latest plan is to buy me an air horn for Mother's Day to take with me on my walks. Don't you think I should use the air horn around 3am in Mr. Joe's ear? Hello Everyone, All good things happening here under the oaks at Sew'n Wild Oaks. My Heritage pattern is available along with a kit at Keepsake Quilting. Everything you see in the next series of pictures is sitting on the floor in my living room. We arrived back home from the quilt show in Fremont, and the bins and tubs of product and quilts made it inside the house and that is where it all sits. The booth looked inviting and charming. It is always fun to put everything out on display. I'm applying to have a booth at a prestigious 3-day show next year. I have to submit pictures and a description of why my booth should be accepted and what makes the booth unique. The pictures and written explanation are ranked by the guild members. The highest ranked vendors are assigned the largest spots, then the smaller spaces are filled by the lower ranking vendors. Everyone has to go through the same process even if you were accepted in the past. I'm a bit nervous to apply now because I was told at the conclusion of the show last weekend that most quilting is going modern and perhaps my style is too traditional and has a definite niche in that realm. I've never been a vendor chair for a quilt show, but it is my assumption that you would want to have vendors from the full quilting spectrum......modern to traditional. I'm still scratching my head over this and have had a bit of heartburn about the entire issue. Not to worry, I'm sticking with my style, my inviting booth, and my marketing strategy. The highlight of the weekend was having my granddaughter Harleigh work the booth with us. She's a quick study and figured out the cash register much quicker than I ever will. Since this was a local show for me, only a few miles from my house, many of my quilting buddies stopped by to say hello. Harleigh was amazed at how many people knew her from the blog and her adventures raising Kevin the pig. She is now knows as "Kevin's Mom". My youngest son turns 40 next week. In our family that means you get a slide show set to music of your entire life. All three of our kids have had a camera in their face since they were in the womb. I'm sifting through thousands of pictures of Kade, and trying to condense his life down to 200 pictures. I have been walking back through time and memories while pulling this together. Kade is our middle child, our rebel, our "I'm going to test Mom & Dad to their limit" kid. Kade is the reason I went prematurely gray!!! If someone had told me when he was 16 he would grow up to be an excellent husband and parent, coach to many, and all-round good citizen and person......I would not have thought it possible. He is the most loving and kind person, and we love him more every day. He would do anything for us and is always the first to offer help. Here he is with his beautiful wife Athena, on their wedding day in Hawaii. Of course these pictures are in the slide show too! Anything is fair game for Mom's slide show! Soon, Lynn
Hello Everyone, I finished another Eagle's Nest block yesterday. I have several more cut out and ready to be sewn together. This is a 6" block. Just in case you were wondering, the flying geese finish at 3/4" x 1 1/2". They are tiny but mighty when they are grouped together. I use a Bloc Loc ruler for trimming. In my opinion, it's the only way to go. If you click at the Virtual Classroom page at the top of my blog, you can find my tutorial for Flying Geese four-at-a-time. Today I'm packing up the quilts and preparing for my lecture and workshop at the Ridge Quilters Guild in Paradise, CA......my hometown where I spent the first 20 years of my life. Paradise is located in the foothills about 100 miles north of Sacramento. It had a population of around 4,400 when we moved there in the early 1950's from the San Francisco Bay Area. You knew just about everyone in town and we couldn't get away with anything! This is back in the day when you got S&H Green Stamps after you filled up your tank of gas back when gas was .25 cents per gallon. Gail and I got to lick the stamps and put them in the book. I can still taste them to this day. Living in such a small community aided in the development of our active imaginations. We had a hat for every occasion. I guess on this day we were traveling the high seas. I'm wearing our Dad's sailor hat from WWII. Gail was the captain of our ship. We put a million miles on our saw horses and galloped around the country saving the world from bad guys. I still have my cap gun that has shot thousands of rounds of caps. We watched Fury on Saturday morning and of course Roy Rogers & Dale Evans. We soon progressed to an air rifle, then learned how to shoot trap as teenagers. I never shot Gail's eye out, but once she chased me with a pitchfork! Now that's a weapon of mass destruction and it's a good thing she didn't catch up with me. We were free-range kids with definite leanings to tomboys. We had the run of 8 acres with a large sledding hill in the winter, and two streams to splash in during the summer. There were berries to pick, a chicken coop for a clubhouse, and a barn to store our trusty sawhorses. Life was good. This is all part of my lecture as I time travel back and tell my story through my quilts to the present day. It's a hoot! Hello Everyone, October Magic is a wrap! The quilt is hanging in the shop and the patterns are on the rack. I'm so happy to have this one finished in time for Fall, and the beginning of the Holidays. Fall to me is a wonderful gift of color. My gift to you is a pattern giveaway. So here's the contest. Hello Everyone, I'm teaching a class called Midnight Star next week at In Between Stitches. The pattern is from Mary's Hickey's Comfort and Joy 14 Quilts for Christmas from Martingale & Company. I made this quilt so many years ago that I needed to give myself a refresher course yesterday. There is nothing worse than to appear to be a complete idiot while teaching a quilting class! My original plan for my day was to make one of each of the three blocks. Well, 10 blocks later I finally called it a day! I would make a block and think, that's cute, I think I will make another one. The new version is going to be very scrappy. I'm beginning to think that Scrappy is my new middle name! I have limited fabric selection here at the cabin, so I make due with what I have. It has become quite the challenge that I enjoy. Note that I have included all of my required elements, polka dots, checks, stripes and plaids! I decided that I want to include a machine quilting feather and cable tutorial for the class. I haven't machine quilted on my Bernina in years.....so another refresher course for me yesterday in machine quilting. First I marked a strip of fabric with my stencil. I drew in some arrows to show the class how to continuously quilt their borders. ....and here you go, my sample of the cable and feather. While quilting on my Bernina, I remembered how much fun it is to machine quilt.....once I figured out how to lower my feed dogs. I actually had to get out the manual. I traced the design on a piece of paper so everyone in the class can have a copy. Proudly they can say, I quilted this quilt myself! Hello Everyone, Remember this quilt? I made ten more blocks yesterday and started sewing the rows together last night. If I turn them just right, they will make a nice design next to the border. It is easier to see the design when I walk across the room, and get back farther. I'll be placing puzzle pieces today from this pile. I know I will be making more blocks after I see what colors are missing on the design wall. Now I think I need to add more blue blocks. I only used Marcus Fabrics in the entire quilt. Here's an organized sample of some of the fabrics, from fat quarters to half yards. I would show you the other bin, but it's not very organized. The largest piece of fabric I need is only 5-1/4". I would like to say I'm making a dent in the stash, but it doesn't seen like I am. So let's make some dents in that stash today. I know I'm going to be rummaging around in more bins to see what I can incorporate into this quilt. I might just find some nice surprises. Soon, Lynn
Hello Everyone, This is what's on my design wall....Country Sunshine blocks. This is one of my favorites. It all begins with my block layout sheet. I made the components that run through the middle of the block, the Flying Geese, Double Flying Geese and center section, then put them on the sheet to keep myself organized. This time I got a little smarter when I made the sheet with the addition of pressing arrows. In reality, we could have a little less sunshine here. It is supposed to be 106 degrees today. The grand kids have taken up residence in our house and pool. It is amazing just how much food five, very active kids can eat in one day! It is also amazing how much sunscreen they use. I'm so glad their parents have drilled this into their brains. After auditioning several fabrics for the sashing, I decided on this old fashioned red. I still haven't decided just how large or small this quilt is going to be. I know I love making the blocks and I don't want to stop! I'm already dreaming of the machine quilting on this one. Hello Everyone, Here is the last block in the series that I made for my classroom section for The Quilt Show. Now what do I do since this is over??? Not to worry, I know I'll keep busy and you will be able to watch the series for FREE forever! The cutting directions for this block is available HERE. There really aren't too many components making up this block. This block will reinforce the construction of a square in a square, flying geese, and the square in a triangle. It's all about color and placement. You can watch the video where I explain the formula, and how to make the square in a triangle component HERE. This picture shows you four variations of this block. It is so much fun playing with the components. My blocks are almost always "spot on" when it comes to the finished size. When I'm making my components, I'm constantly measuring. When the components are perfect, the whole block will be perfect. Here's the grand finale. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the little Y-square sashing around this block. It sets it off beautifully. The video showing you how to make the Y-Squares is HERE. To my eye, the sashing and corner posts give the block a lacy look. I didn't want the corner posts to overpower the entire quilt, so I used the same fabric that I used in the sashing. What started out as blocks to use for TQS for teaching purposes is turning into a fabulous quilt. I'm going to call this one Patchwork Math on Steroids. Not really, but a name isn't coming to me yet. This quilt pattern provides very detailed directions to make this 93" x 93" quilt. It is easy to resize either larger or smaller. The quilt combines both pieced and machine appliqued blocks. This would also look great in other colorways.

Wedding Quilt
Hello Everyone, I've been asked by some of the ladies who signed up for my Party in the Garden BOM through ThimbleCreek for a basket tutorial. So here you go! This little basket is going to be in each corner of my new Buttonwood pattern too. Since I'm a multi-tasker, I'm killing two birds with one stone. I'll make a basket for the new design, while fulfilling the wishes for a tutorial. Here's the end result, a 6-1/2" unfinished, cute little basket. The following series of pictures addresses how to make the basket handle. Once the handle is made, the rest of the block is a piece of cake. Just take your time and accurate cutting is absolutely essential. Start with (2) 3" x 3" blocks cut from background fabric and (2) 3" x 3" blocks from the contrasting fabric. With right sides together, using a quarter inch ruler, mark each of the blocks like this. Stitch along the marked lines. Line a ruler up at the 1-1/2" vertical mark, which should perfectly intersect the center of the block, hold your breath and cut. Line up the ruler at 1-1/2" horizontal mark, and cut again. Now you have eight sections like this. Cut between the stitching lines. You will have a total of 16 half-square triangles. You will only need 12, but save the extra four for another basket. Press toward the darker fabric. Trim each of the 12 HST (half-square triangles) to exactly 1". With a Bloc Loc ruler, you can just slide it from one side to the other for easy trimming. You will have 12 perfect 1" HST. Next from background fabric, cut (1) 1-3/8" square and cut it in half diagonally. This is for the end of the handle. From the background fabric, cut (1) 3-7/8" x 3-7/8" square for the basket top. Cut it in half diagonally. Save the extra side if you wish to make another basket. Place each of the above pieces like this. Stitch the HST together in groups of two. Press each section carefully so you don't stretch them out of shape. Press the seams toward the top of the basket handle. This is important! Finish stitching all of the HST together. It should look like this. Then sew the triangles to the bottom of the HST strip and press this seam toward the triangle. Almost done with the handle. Cut (3) 1" x 1" squares of contrasting fabric for the top of the handle. Stitch one square to the HST strip. Press toward the 1" square. Sew left HST strip to the basket background. Have your stitching intersect the previous stitches and you will not loose any points in the handle. Press toward the large triangle. Stitch right HST strip to the other side. Press toward the large triangle. The hardest part is now over! Cut (1) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" square and cut in half diagonally. A flange is optional here. Cut (1) 1" x 10" strip of flange material, fold it in half with wrong sides together and press. Be careful not to stretch the flange. Stitch it to the basket bottom a scant 1/8" along the raw edges. Attach top of the basket to the bottom. Always trim the little dog ears off. Press flange down and back seam up. For basket base, cut (1) 1-7/8" x 1-7/8" square and cut it in half diagonally. It goes here. For the remaining pieces, cut (2) 1-1/2" x 5-1/2" rectangles for top and (2) 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles for sides. Cut (1) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" square and cut in half diagonally for bottom base. Your block should look like this. From background, cut (2) 1" x 1" square and place at the top of the basket. Make a four-patch section from the four squares. Sew basket base triangles to 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles. Press toward the dark triangle base. Then stitch to basket sides. Stitch the left long rectangle to the basket. Press toward the rectangle Sew the four patch at the top of the basket to the 1-1/2" x 5-1/2" rectangle. Press toward the rectangle. Stitch the bottom triangle to the basket base. You are finished, an almost perfect 6-1/2" basket block is your reward. No points were lost in the making of this basket! Well, almost no points.
