Today I turned into someone I never thought I would become. I became one of those mums. I enforced outside fun in the rain. Enforced fun! I hated these growing up. Who wants to go out in the rain? Who wants to be forced out? Well quite frankly I’m glad we did! Luke has been in the foulest of foul moods today. This morning I thought I might be able to curb some of that if he could have a good old run around. I was sort of right, we did have a lot of fun. The park is a ten minute walk from our house and it was definitely raining when we set off, Luke in the buggy and Mummy testing out her brand new Karrimor “mummy coat”! My sister also came along for the walk. Within five minutes of being in the park, “Cat” was dropped in a very big puddle and I discovered my drink had leaked all through my handbag. Oh well! Luke was being a proper stroppy one so he didn’t want to follow us or go where we were heading. We went one way around the pond and he started to go the other. Until he saw the huuuuge number of birds on our side! There was a lot of bird chasing. A lot of “quack quack”ing. A lot of “hello”, “byyyye” and the occasional “STAY!” None of the birds stayed when he told them to. We only slipped over twice. He didn’t care about the fact he’d fallen over, only that his hands were dirty. I taught him my favourite trick: just wipe it on your jeans, lad! It seemed to settle him down (we still needed an emergency baby wipe to humour him). Coming home wasn’t so much fun! In true toddler style, Luke wanted to be carried, he definitely did not want to go in his buggy. About half way home I got so sick of his complaining, I strapped him in and let him get on with it. The joys of parenting! I find going out with Luke to be enjoyable for the first 15 minutes and then it all goes down hill. I’m sure other parents must go through the same thing?! But, if you discount the tantrum, it was fun!

Everyone knows that in winter, it’s a lot harder for our wildlife to find the food they need. That’s why it’s lovely to give our birds a little helping hand and a free meal. Cookie cutter bird feeders are really simple to create and make the perfect winter activity to do with children. There’s lots of stirring, spooning, transferring and patting involved to improve those motor skills and teaching children to care for our wildlife and environment is something I am a big fan of. **This post contains affiliate links** Cookie Cutter Bird Feeders As I said before, it’s really easy to make these cookie cutter bird feeders and they’re great fun to make with children. Below is the recipe and a few links to products that I have found which will make everything a little easier for you. Please be aware that measurements are only a rough estimate as some bird feed will require more/less lard. Remember when filling up the cookie cutters that you want to aim to have bird seed sitting in lard, rather than a little bit of lard sitting in bird feed. You Will Need: Lard Bird Feed Cookie Cutters Heat Proof Bowl Freezer proof tray/chopping board How To Make Cookie Cutter Bird Feeders: 1. Melt 150g of lard in a saucepan on a medium heat. You don’t need to worry about stirring it, it will all just melt on it’s own. 2. Once melted, pour the lard into a heat proof bowl. 3. Slowly add 300g of bird feed to the lard. Listen carefully and you will hear some of the seeds popping! 4. Mix the bird feed and the lard together thoroughly. Place your cookie butters on your freezer proof tray/chipping board and spoon in the mixture carefully. Make sure you get in all the nooks and crannies and pat the bird feed down so it’s all compact. Use a pencil or straw to make a hole! 5. Place in the freezer for a few hours – this sets the lard again. Make sure the lard has set fully before removing the bird feeders from the cookie cutters. Once the lard has set, carefully remove the bird feeders from the cookie cutters and thread some twine or ribbon through the hole you made with the pencil. Hang up in your trees, on your bird houses, or wherever else your birds like to hang out and wait and watch!
