The Wisconsin tradition of tall tales came out of a practice of storytelling around campfires and in the bunk houses of logging camps. The exaggeration of these stories had to be tempered with elements of humor, adventure, and an understanding of the human condition in order for them to be of lasting interest and persistence in the oral culture. A native of Wisconsin, Fred Stonehouse is widely known for his depictions of a cast of invented characters which heartily nod to his local folkloric predecessors. His subjects, like those of the old tall tales, are hybrids created for their narrative value, often humorous in their imaginative absurdity. Stonehouse presents fragments of personalities, conflicts, fables, and surreal settings, always giving the sense that a fantastic story lies just beyond what can be gleaned from the image alone.
Jana Brike is a remarkable storyteller. Narrative is the very life and soul of her work. Much akin to the tribal folklore of Jana's Latvian heritage...
Popular lowbrow artist Isabel Samaras' work is populated with pop culture icons, erotic tableaux based on mid-century TV shows, and riffs on the old master painters. This is the fist monograph to highlight her witty, sexy, surreal work. Featuring delightful and enlightening text from art writers Justin Giarla and Colin Berry, fellow-lowbrow luminaries the Pizz and Shag, and erotic novelist Lucy Blue, "On Tender Hooks" is at once a serious contribution to the world of contemporary art books and a hell of a lot of fun.

The only two English words on the Facebook About page for Argentine art duo Pool & Marianela are “Lowbrow art.” Their portfolio is loaded with exquisitely detourned children’s toys, mostly Barbie and Ken dolls refashioned into Catholic icons. If you just rolled your eyes, I totally get why, but take a look at this stuff—this is no mad-at-daddy art student hack job. All the details in the garments and packaging are thoroughly considered and painstakingly well executed. Unsurprisingly, the duo has sparked controversy in heavily Catholic Latin America. The works will be exhibited in Buenos Aires, starting on October 11, in a show called “Barbie, The Plastic Religion.” The pair are clearly quite keen to agitate—they’re also known for making inflatable punching bags of Argentine public figures. Lastly, check out their St. George slaying a My Little Pony. I actually laughed aloud a little bit.
