This is an early 1950s illustration by Helen McKie showing St. Paul’s Cathedral and a City of London Police Sergeant. I think I am right in saying that the City of London force is the only force in the UK which still retains the duty armband. In the City of London Police, Constables wear a red and white armband on the left arm and Sergeants wear it on the right arm. The need for an indication that a Police Officer was on duty was recognised in the Metropolitan Police within one month of its founding. On 20th October 1829 Police Order No.3 stated “. In wishing the Police Constables not to assemble together in the streets. The Commissioners point out to the Constables that the public are now ignorant whether the Police Constables are on duty or not and when men are seen together it is said that they are neglecting their duty in not patrolling round their beats. Some distinction will hereafter be made to mark the men who are actually on duty, and those who are not on duty may then be left completely at liberty“. Signed. RM. The Police Order was signed by Richard Mayne. This intention to make a distinction between those on and off duty was followed by a Police Order of 8th March 1830 which stated “In issuing to the Police Force the new badge to be worn when men are on duty the Superintendents will read No. 3 of the order of the 20th October last, and will fully explain that the object of view is to prevent the constant complaints that would be made by the public on seeing those of the Police Force who are not on duty, walking or talking together, which they will now be able to do without that unpleasant consequence, the badge will be worn on the left arm just above the cuff“. The Metropolitan Police abolished the wearing of the duty armband in 1968, although I joined the Metropolitan Police after 1968 I can still remember older officers wearing raincoats which still had the armband loops on the left arm. I have always been envious of the City force, their uniforms were always of a much better quality than the Met.
