Projetado e construído pela “Lockheed Aircraft Corporation” sob rí­gidas especificações do lendário Howard Hughes, o “Super-Constellation” deu iní­cio, a uma nova era no transporte aéreo mundial. O projeto original, encomendado por Howard Hughes, accionista maioritário da extinta “TWA - Trans World Airline”, era de uma aeronave de longo alcance, capaz de voar sem escalas entre New York e Los Angeles, com autonomia transatlântica (3.500 milhas) e com uma capacidade mínima para 40 passageiros. Foi desenvolvido pela equipe de projetistas liderada por Clarence L."Kelly" Johnson, que tinha sido anteriormente responsável pelos modelos “Electra I” e pelo “Lodestar”. No final de 1939, surgiu o projeto definitivo do novo avião, equipado com motores «Curtis Wright» R-3350 de 18 cilindros e 2.200 hp de potência, equipados com hélices de três pás, com quase cinco metros de diâmetro. A forma da fuselagem do “Super-Constellation” é ainda hoje considerada uma das mais graciosas e elegantes já concebidas. Ao projeto da asa foi dada especial atenção: sua forma foi baseada no projeto do caça «Lockheed» P-38 Lightning, proporcionando uma performance que surpreendeu até mesmo os engenheiros da Lockheed. Entretanto com o começo da II Guerra Mundial, os aviões que estavam sendo construídos para a TWA, seriam convertidos em aviões de transporte militar e o primeiro, versão C-69, voaria a 9 de Janeiro de 1943. Primeiro “Super-Constellation”, na versão militar C-69 em 9 de Janeiro de 1943 Em Dezembro de 1953, a primeira administração da nova “TAP - Transportes Aéreos Portugueses S.A.R.L.”, resultado da passagem de empresa pública a empresa privada, apressou-se a promover um estudo visando a remodelação da frota da empresa, com vista a poder oferecer um serviço de transporte aéreo moderno, de qualidade e compatível com as necessidades crescentes da linha de África, onde ainda operava com os velhos e obsoletos «Douglas» C-47A (DC3) Dakota. A reconversão dos velhos «Douglas» C54A (DC4) Skymaster adquiridos à KLM, em 1954, foi uma medida transitória, entretanto tomada, enquanto se procediam a esses estudos para a selecção de um avião moderno para o longo curso. Futuro «Lockheed» L-1049G Super Constellation “Vasco da Gama” Havia,pois, urgentemente que aumentar a capacidade, reduzir os tempos de voo e melhorar a qualidade do serviço. Foi assim, que a TAP encomendou, em 1953, à “Lockheed Aircraft Corporation” três “Super Constellation L-1049G”, também conhecidos na gíria aeronáutica por “Connie’s”, ou “Constellation’s”. Para a TAP iniciava-se a era dos “Super-Constellation”, representando um salto qualitativo importante, já que cada novo avião significava em tonelagem e capacidade de transporte correspondente a dois «Douglas» DC-4 “Skymaster” ou quatro «Douglas» DC-3 “Dakota”. 7 de Julho de 1956 O «Lockheed» L-1049G Super Constellation, “Super G”, com o prefixo CS-TLA, e batizado de “Vasco da Gama”, foi entregue em 15 de Julho de 1955, em Burbank, na Califórnia. Inicialmente sem radar de tempo, e tendo-o recebido apenas em 1961, foi o último aparelho da frota da TAP a ter este tipo de equipamento instalado. O vôo teria escala em New York e Santa Maria nos Açores. Esta versão veio com maior capacidade de combustível, janelas quadradas e novos quatro motores "Curtis Wright" «turbo-compound» de 3.250 cavalos cada. Deslocavam 62 toneladas, à velocidade máxima de 600 Km/h, sendo a velocidade de cruzeiro 500 Km/h, Estas aeronaves estavam destinadas a serem utilizados na linha de África, nas rotas Lisboa-Accra-Luanda-Lourenço Marques, tendo sido iniciadas em 27 de Novembro de 1955. O tempo de duração do vôo Lisboa-Luanda passou de 22 horas de voo para 15, e para Lourenço Marques passou de 31 horas para 22. Nessa linha foi utilizada a versão de 69 passageiros. «O viajante terá na cabina do "Super-Constellation" mais a sensação de que está instalado num moderno hotel, do que própriamente num avião a que nem falta a confortável sala de estar.» 1961 Autocarro da TAP e aeronave Escada com coberta feita para o “Super-Constellation” A sua cozinha, funcionando a electricidade produzida por geradores, estava apta a fornecer 140 refeições quentes, além das intermédias. A tripulação técnica era composta palo Comandante, Co-Piloto, Mecânico, Navegador e Radio-Telegrafista. Em 1957, os «Super-Constellation» são introduzidos nas linhas de Lisboa-Paris (Orly) e Lisboa-Londres (Heathrow), ao mesmo tempo que é contratada a compra de três aviões britânicos “Vickers Viscount” para o médio curso. Em 1958, dá início às ligações aéreas com Bruxelas e restabelecimento da escala de Leopoldville na linha de África. Em 1961 são estabelecidas as ligações Lisboa-Beira (Moçambique) e Lisboa-Bissau. Esta versão, basicamente idêntica ao modelo “G”, possuía a fuselagem da versão militar de carga 1049 F, tendo o chão da cabina reforçado para utilização de carga, e o seu peso em vazio era bastante superior. A aquisição de dois L1049-G em segunda mão em Maio de 1961, permitiram à TAP adicionar novas rotas e outros destinos a este equipamento. De salientar a particularidade destes aviões virem munidos com radar de tempo, que lhes acrescentou um nariz mais comprido, e tanques suplementares nas pontas das asas, os designados “tip-tanks”. O nariz alongado incorporando o radar de tempo, foi mais tarde introduzido nos três primeiros aviões da empresa, aumentando a sua segurança e operacionalidade. «Lockheed» L-1049G Super Constellation “Vasco da Gama” em Leopoldville «Lockheed» L-1049G Super Constellation “Salvador Correa” no Rio de Janeiro Em 8 de Julho de 1961 foi inaugurada a rota Lisboa-Goa, operada pelo L-1049 CS-TLA “Vasco da Gama” e pilotado pelo Comandante José Sequeira Marcelino. Este vôo fazia escalas em Beirut, Damasco e Karachi, sendo a rota quinzenal. Com a invasão da Índia portuguesa pelas tropas da União Indiana, a rota é encerrada nesse mesmo ano, em 18 de Dezembro, cinco meses depois de ter sido iniciada, com o “Super-Constellation” da TAP a levantar vôo de Goa, pouco tempo depois do Aeroporto ter sido bombardeado. A 27 de Maio de 1966, o Presidente do Conselho, Dr. Oliveira Salazar, efectuou a sua única viagem de avião no voo TP104 Lisboa - Porto, a bordo do “Super Constellation” L-1049 “Mouzinho de Albuquerque”, quando se dirigia a Braga para as comemorações do 28 de Maio de 1966. No final da viagem, terá desabafado ao Comandante António Abel Rodrigues Mano: “não gostei!”. E realmente foi a única vez que viajou de avião. Depois de, em 11 de Julho de 1965, um “Super-Constellation” da TAP ter estado presente na inauguração do “Aeroporto de Faro”, em 14 de Setembro de 1967, chegaria a Lisboa, pelas 17h 35m, e proveniente do Rio de Janeiro o último voo da era “Super Constellation” na TAP. Era o CS-TLC “Gago Coutinho”, que tinha entrado ao serviço em 19 de Setembro de 1955, sendo comandado pelo Comandante Costa Cabral. “Super Constellation” na inauguração do Aeroporto de Faro em 11 de Julho de 1965 No Aeroporto de Santa Catarina no Funchal em 1964 «Lockheed» L-1049G Super Constellation “Gago Coutinho” e sua tripulação à chegada a Lisboa Assim se fez a história dos “Super-Constellation” na TAP, ao longo de 12 anos, com cerca de 16.000 voos efectuados num total superior a 33 milhões de quilómetros percorridos. Os "Super-Constellation" que estiveram ao serviço da "TAP - Transportes Aéreos Portugueses" foram os seguintes: Matricula: CS - TLA Nº de Série: 4616 Nome: "Vasco Da Gama" Período de serviço: 1955-1967 Matricula: CS - TLB Nº de Série: 4617 Nome: "Infante Dom Henrique" Período de serviço: 1955-1967 Matricula: CS - TLC Nº de Série: 4618 Nome: "Gago Coutinho" Período de serviço: 1955-1967 Matricula: CS - TLD Nº de Série: 4808 Nome: " ---------" Período de serviço: 1958-1959 Matricula: CS - TLE Nº de Série: 4677 Nome: "Salvador Correa" Período de serviço: 1961-1967 Matricula: CS - TLF Nº de Série: 4672 Nome: "Mouzinho de Albuquerque" Período de serviço: 1961-1967 Uma curiosidade: o atrás mencionado “Gago Coutinho”, depois de ter sido vendido à “International Aerodyne Incorporated”, que o transferiu para Miami, foi posteriormente, vendido à “Jack A. Crosson” a 21 de Novembro de 1968. Contudo o avião já estava a ser usado na ponte aérea do Biafra. Posteriormente viria a ser comprado pela “Phoenix Air Transport”, e baptizado de “Endeavour”. Mais tarde, é abandonado em Faro a 13 de Novembro de 1969. Em 1978 foi vendido por 350 Libras esterlinas a um sucateiro, que posteriormente o vendeu aos irmãos Hohbert que o recuperaram e transformaram em restaurante - o “Super G” - junto à aerogare do Aeroporto de Faro, de Maio a Setembro de 1981. A documentary, 'Secrets in the Sky: The Untold Story of Skunk Works,' on A+E Networks' HISTORY, which premieres on June 9, looks at its aviation contributions and its founder, Kelly Johnson.

Today's aircraft are loaded with computer systems doing all kinds of tasks previously done by the crew. If you see a picture like the one below, you realize the evolution that has taken place in the cockpit. Apart from four cabin staff, there are six (!) cockpit crew members. It is very well possible that the character of this flight, it was the first KLM flight from Amsterdam to Tokyo via the polar route, was the reason to have a couple of extra crew members on board. But on this DC7C-flight you see the captain, the co-pilot, two navigators and two flight engineers. If you compare this number with the current flight deck crew of two, you'll appreciate the changes that have taken place there. First flight from Schiphol to Tokyo via the north pole on Nov. 1, 1958 with captain A.D. Snitslaar left (names of other crew known as well). To celebrate a first flight KLM, and other airlines as well, issued first flight envelopes. Although I have a lot of those myself, the one below does not belong to my collection. It was carried on the return flight from Tokyo to Amsterdam on Nov. 4, 1958. KLM first flight envelope. Shortly after WW2 KLM started a training for radio telegraph operators. Their first call sign was PI1KLM. And still today there are some devoted KLM amateur radio enthousiasts who go on the air every Sunday on frequency 3785 khz. Their call sign is PI9KLM and they have their own website. A radio operator* in his Douglas DC6 "office" probably close to the end of the fourties . *Update May 19, 2016: A year and a half ago I received an email from Mr. Joop Witbaard, 85 years old at the time and a former KLM radio operator. He had an idea about who the radio operator in the above picture might be. But since he wasn't certain he promised to let me know when he did. Yesterday he informed me he could tell with 90% certainty that this is Mr. C. Hoefnagel who started with KLM back in 1939. He died near Rhein Main airport in Germany on March 22, 1952 when his DC6 PH-TPJ was in the final approach and the aircraft flew into a forest. The cause of this crash was never found. Joop also has a theory that this picture was taken in a Lockheed Constellation L-049. His idea is based on the picture below. It shows the lay out of the identical L-749. He feels the photo is taken from where the red square is drawn. From that angle you almost have to see the back of the flight engineer seat as it is also visible in the picture. Update Sept. 17, 2016: There is now definite confirmation that the radio operator shown above is Mr. Cornelis Hoefnagel. Today I received a comment from his son Kees. He said: "It was a nice surprise for me to find the photographs of the "unidentified" radio operator in "Saved from the dustbin (8)" and the recent update with information by Mr. Joop Witbaard, who is very right! I can tell you, now with 100% certainty, that the radio operator is my father, Cornelis Hoefnagel and that the photo was indeed taken in the cockpit of a Lockheed Constellation. The photograph was made for a KLM promotional campaign in the U.S.A. and has appeared in Time Magazine in the late forties and was also printed in the KLM Board Magazine Holland Herald of November 2013. The text of this advertishment read "His ear never leaves the ground". Subsequently Kees send me both publications. In his email he said: "As promised, I send you the relevant page from Time of 5 April 1948, as well as the reuse of the photograph in the Holland Herald of April 2014. I remember that I was on my way from Amsterdam to Bucharest and leisurely scrolling through the KLM Board Magazine, when all at once I was confronted with this photograph of my father, 66 years after it was made. As I was only 3 years old, when my father died in the crash of the DC-6 "Koningin Juliana" near Frankfurt, I am always looking at old aviation photographs and reports hoping to find something about him. This is how I came onto you blog and I very much appreciate what you did with everything you saved from the dustbin! When we had the terrible KLM/PAA crash in Tenerife on March 27, 1977 one of the many victims was KLM captain Mr. J. Veldhuyzen van Zanten. At the time he was involved in a KLM advertising campaign among others shown in the Holland Herald issue on board of the aircraft crashed in Tenerife... After this terrible incident it became policy not to show crew members in advertising campaigns any more. Apparently this policy was long forgotten when the picture of Mr. Hoefnagel was published in 2014. And I doubt whether the editor realized how he met his fate... Captain Jacob Veldhuyzen van Zanten in the 1977 Holland Herald [end of update] ________________ Airline people tend to regard everything that is taking place in the cockpit as the center of the world. However, also cockpit staff will have to admit that it is rather difficult to operate an airline without the benefit of passengers (and shippers for that matter) willing to foot the bill. So passengers have to be pampered. And that can be done in various ways. Beauty sleep in a Douglas DC6. KLM started operating the DC6 in 1948. The word 'marketing' did not even exist then... And do you still remember airline ads for first class service? Haute cuisine and superb wines at high altitudes. I have always wondered what the effect is on those superb wines when an aircraft races over a runway with a speed of say 200 miles/hour... KLM Royal Class service in a Douglas DC8. Speaking of ads, one of the earliest ads in colour was a picture postcard of this Super Constellation, to my mind still one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built. This one was registered in KLM's name on Dec. 22, 1955. KLM Super Constellation PH-LKE "Pegasus". Not surprising the Constellation was affectionately nicknamed "Connie". A line up of unpainted Super Constellations, probably near the factory at Burbank, CA. All of the above pictures have been saved from destruction by my colleagues Aris Zwart en Bert Besseling. This time round, I’d like to take you back to a legendary KLM hotel. A presidential residence in Bangkok.

The Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation is an American aircraft, a member of the Lockheed Constellation aircraft line. The L-1049 was Lockheed's response to the successful Douglas DC-6 airliner, first flying in 1950. The aircraft was also produced for both the United States Navy and Air Force as transport, electronics, and airborne early warning and control aircraft. Since 1943 Lockheed had been planning a stretched variant of the Constellation family. The first was an L-049 with a fuselage lengthened by 13 feet (4 m). The next was an L-749 lengthened by 18 feet (5.5 m). Neither was built due to the lack of suitable engines on the civilian market. The idea was relaunched after a rival aircraft appeared, when Douglas launched a stretched version of its DC-6 airliner as a cargo transport, designated DC-6A, for both military and civilian operators. Douglas was soon to launch a passenger version (the DC-6B) of this new aircraft. The DC-6B could carry 23 more passengers than Lockheed's current production L-749 Constellation.
