It is native to North America, where it occurs throughout the plains of central Canada, the central United States, and northern Mexico. This perennial produces one or more erect stems 14 to 85 cm (6 in to 2 ft 9 in) tall. They grow from a thick taproot 1.3 to 5 m (4 ft 3 in to 16 ft 5 in) deep that produces rhizomes. The heads contain several flowers which are usually purple, but sometimes white. This species is long-lived, with specimens estimated to be over 35 years old. It is drought-tolerant because of its deep roots, though it does become less abundant in times of drought. Chapman's blazing star (Liatris chapmanii) is a species common to upland habitats throughout Florida. Found primarily in sandhill and scrub, it is very adaptable as long as the soils are well drained. Chapman's blazing star is easily recognized from others in this genus. The needle-like leaves are curved upwards toward the flower stalk and partially cover the developing buds. Unlike many other blazing stars, the leaves are prominent nearly to the tip of the flower stalk and the buds are held close to it. This makes the bloom spike appear quite dense. Chapman's blazing star is somewhat variable in size. In extremely poor soils, it is rarely taller than 2-3 feet, but in better soils, it may stand as tall as 4-5 feet. When it reaches these heights, it is prone to falling over; especially when grown in the open conditions it favors. Blooming occurs a bit earlier than most other members of this genus. Most specimens begin in late August to very early September and are finished before October arrives. The blooms are especially attractive to a wide variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies and the rich lavender color is aesthetically interesting. We have grown Chapman's blazing star in our wildlfower gardens for many years and have found it to be one of the easiest species to maintain. Give it plenty of sun and deep sandy soils and it will thrive. Plant this specimen in clumps and place it in the middle of the planting. If your soils are more fertile than pure scrub sand, place it near some other plants to give it structure and to help keep it from falling over.

Northern Blazing Star is native from Maine to Wisconsin and south to Alabama. It prefers medium to dry soils, especially with a sandy or rocky component. It can grow between 2' - 3' tall; taller in rich or moist soils. The purple flowers are thistle-like and are typically about 1” across. The flowers grow in columned bunches that can extend up to 18” of the overall plant stem. Flowers bloom from the top of the plant toward the bottom, so may fall over unless tied to a stake. Rough blazing star is one of the shorter species in the genus liatris, topping out for us at 3' tall, when it bursts into flower for us in late June (NC). The zig-zaggy stalks are clothed with wavy green leaves, held at 90 degrees to the stem. The flowers resemble large shaggy purple buttons along the top 2/3 of the stalk...a wonderful garden specimen in our trials. This incredibly drought-tolerant species is native through most of the central US, from North Dakota south to Texas, where it provides nectar/food for an array of butterflies and bumblebees. Our offering is seed grown from a Wade Roitsch collection near the southern end of its documented range in Bastrop County, Texas.
