Important Art Deco Gale Turnbull for Leigh Potters table lamp, circa 1929, Leigh art ware Uncommon example of the early American streamline skyscraper design motif in bulbous form. Original tag, rare Mulberry glaze. Model #7. Some wear to brown enamel on shaft and sockets. Untested, finial missing (if any). Ceramic base alone 9.5" tall. Daniel Gale Turnbull, American art-school-trained artist of some renown working in oils and watercolor In France up to 1927, was hired in 1929 by Charles "Leigh" Sebring (Frank Sebring family of potters in Ohio) to design for Leigh a few dramatic new lines. His first and foremost design was this line of Leigh art ware, on the Classic "umbertone" base developed by his predecessor Palin Thorley in 1928 (after having been brought to Leigh from Wedgwood). By 1934, Leigh Potters had closed, facing stiff competition from Cowan and the European Modernists; Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper, Keith Murray and Jean Luce. Similarity with some jazz - age music-related Ruth Reeves / Donald Deskey themes in this line as well. There are no, more progressive, known examples of early Modernist American earthenware with architecture & cubist art designs than this line, much rarer than Victor Schreckengost's work for Cowan. Two pieces in the Dallas Museum of Art collection; search on-line and also see page 360, "China and Glass in America, 1880-1980," Venable, et al, DMA. Possibly one piece in the Cleveland Museum collection. Turnbull was also co-designer, with Rockwell Kent, of the Classic "Our America" series by Vernon Kilns. See also: Columbus Museum of Art 2005 exhibition 'Bringing Modernism Home: Ohio Decorative Arts, 1890-1960.' for an example of "Manhattan Skylines" for Leigh Potters of Alliance, Ohio, circa 1929-1930.

A museum worthy and complete "Aristocrat" demitasse coffee set designed by Gale Turnbull for Leigh Potters of Sebring, Ohio. Condition on the set is as about as perfect as one could wish for. There are a few tiny paint flakes here and there which are barely noticeable. The paint is 99.5% intact. I do not believe the set was ever used. The set includes 6 cups and saucers, a sugar and creamer along with the coffee pot. Typical of this Leigh Ware there is an overall crazing to the clear overglaze. Feel free to ask me any questions about this iconic set. Shipping in the US is fully insured and FREE> Thank you for looking!

NATIONAL BESTSELLER "Each author captures Christie—and Marple—perfectly, while also displaying just a bit of her own unique touch. . . . This new and entertaining collection by some of our favorite writers will hook a new group of readers to the formidable Miss Marple." — Rhys Bowen, Washington Post “Marple is the best loved [detective]. Also the most influential. . . . It is Miss Marple who introduced the revolutionary notion that people are essentially the same wherever one goes.” — Los Angeles Times Agatha Christie’s legendary sleuth, Jane Marple, returns to solve twelve baffling cases in this brand-new collection, penned by a host of acclaimed authors skilled in the fine art of mystery and murder One doesn't stop at one murder... Jane Marple is an elderly lady from St Mary Mead who possesses an uncanny knack for solving even the most perplexing puzzles. Now, for the first time in 45 years, Agatha Christie’s beloved character returns to the page for a globe-trotting tour of crime and detection. Join Marple as she travels through her sleepy English village and around the world. In St Mary Mead, a Christmas dinner is interrupted by unexpected guests; the Broadway stage in New York City is set for a dangerous improvisation; bad omens surround an untimely death aboard a cruise ship to Hong Kong; and a bestselling writer on holiday in Italy is caught in a nefarious plot. These and other crimes committed in the name of love, jealousy, blackmail, and revenge are ones that only the indomitable Jane Marple can solve. Bringing a fresh twist to the hallmarks of a classic Agatha Christie mystery, these twelve esteemed writers have captured the sharp wit, unique voice, and droll ingenuity of the deceptively demure detective. A triumphant celebration of Christie’s legacy and essential reading for crime lovers, Marple is a timely reminder why Jane Marple remains one of the most famous detectives of all time.
Leigh Ware of Leigh Potters in US Egert Rose Trophy charger plate. 22 karat gold trim. 11 1/4” diameter. No chips or breaks. One faded brown spot that looks to be baked in the plate. Great display piece to hang in dining room or kitchen.
This is a truly lovely genuine vintage Art Deco bowl. Stamped Burleigh Ware, Burgess and Leigh, Burselm, England. The colour is gorgeous. More orange than red, with a black interior and decorated, with yellow and white daisies round the rim. It measures 10in diameter and stands 3.5 ins high. The condition is very good pre-loved vintage. There is some light wear on the inside of the bowl, commensurate with age, but no chips or cracks. I'm afraid I can't post ceramics outside the UK due to prohibitive postage costs and potential damage in transit.
