Ever since 2009 when our oldest two boys were just seven and eight years old (they are now thirteen and fourteen!) they have put together a Playmobil Way of the Cross during Holy Week. Last year, instead of pulling out the Playmobil, the boys created LEGO scenes for Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. This year they expanded […]
This empty tomb Lego building lesson will get your kids creatively engaged in the Easter story. Includes story suggestions, questions, and prayer.
Here’s a fun Easter activity for kids – build a LEGO® Resurrection Garden! I love the beautiful Resurrection Garden ideas online that use real rocks and grass to create a table centerpiece with a scene of the cross and the empty tomb. This isn’t quite the same, but I was honestly surprised at how pretty […]
A mashup of early renaissance frescoes. Thanks to Giotto and the other guys for inspiration :)
Institution of the Lord's Supper (Matthew 26:26-29) 26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."
Reading and playtime. They are two powerful forces that shape our minds and tug at our hearts. Read great books to your kids and you ignite the imagination. Encourage play and you take that imagination to a whole new level that cements learning into long-term memory. When it comes to the Easter season, I love […]
The Resurrection (John 20:1-18) 1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him." 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." 16 Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Aramaic,"Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"--and that he had said these things to her.

A couple of weeks ago I saw this book in my local book shop and bought it as a surprise for Surfer Boy (he who collects lego mini-figures) He was rather bemused that I had bought him a bible - neither of us being religious - but he appreciated it all the same. Can you imagine putting together the entire Bible in Lego figures?! The funniest thing about this book is picking the Lego characters that he has used - Moondoggie picked up that Jesus is actually the body of Anakin Skywalker! This is not all that suitable for children as some of the stories are depicted quite graphically (it's amazing how often the bible men had sex with prostitutes.) but it is an absolute wonder and rather hysterical. Today is Maundy Thursday, when Christians remember the meal that Jesus had with his disciples on the night he was betrayed, and he "took bre...
Our version of the famous Brazilian statue of Jesus has all the robes built sideways tio preserve the detail of the folds and fabric. The real Statue sits atop Mt Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro in Brazi and is over 30m tall. It famously has a hot dog stand near its base that sells "Jesus Dogs", so we had to include one in ours! Our model took 70 hours and just over 9,500 bricks to build and was designed by Ryan McNaught Built by Claire Ashworth
Capturing the forms of the folding and overlapping robes proved an enjoyable design challenge. While I had never attempted such a holistic human sculpture, the language is certainly an extension of that used for my model of Mount Rushmore National Memorial earlier this year.
LEGO is great. You can make anything, right? Well actually, maybe you can. A friend of a friend has a son who uses a wheelchair, and he made it onto his local Wheelchair Football Team. As a surprise for him our friend enlisted our help to make a LEGO minifigure to celebrate his achievement. You don't reinvent the wheel (or the wheelchair) if you don't have to, so to start us off we had a quick look around and there are lots of designs of wheelchairs that people have made using LEGO, and some of them are excellent, but we didn't see anything spot on for this young man's electric wheelchair. My partner set to work and his initial design which was mainly to work out 'how it all came together' looked like this....version 1. Once the basic shape is sorted out, it's all about refinement... Now it really was starting to come together....and a bit of internet searching brought up photos of his team, so we could check out the kit... It uses one 'illegal' technique (something that causes stress to a LEGO piece) to make the joystick on the armrest, and the rubber hose is strictly Technic and ours is a vintage part, but it's all LEGO, and his Mum made it all worthwhile by posting a thank you on Facebook... So to the instructions......We actually created a booklet for our young friend, just in case his wheelchair footballer ever needed repairing. Each page shows the pieces required and how it goes on to the model - hopefully enough like real LEGO instructions that you have no problem following it! These are the parts you will need.... (see bottom of the page for advice). And the instructions....Emmet style.... A novice masterbuilder can easily play around and adapt the front to remove the protective bumper, or change the headrest or battery, or anything else so that your wheelchair can really be YOUR wheelchair. We managed to find the pieces to make our wheelchair footballer, but we had to replace a couple of them because they were rarer and from sets. There are various places around the internet where you can buy LEGO elements individually, possibly the biggest and best known is BrickLink - an online market which is open to anyone to buy and sell their spare LEGO. It's where we've always bought our odd pieces of LEGO, and it's always been awesome. Thanks to Brett for being lovely enough to think of the idea, and for asking us to join in....feelgood factor x 20.
