It is a coooolllld Saturday here in Connecticut, as we wait for more snow. I agree with my friends though, if it is going to be this cold, it mind as well snow. I am excited to link up with the sweetest and most stylish teacher I know, Joanne, over at Head Over Heels for Teaching. As soon as I thought of this idea, I knew today would be the perfect way to blog about it **I am not advertising for the company, I just wanted to share my excited find with my teacher friends!** I was inspired last weekend by a new app I came across on the educational freebie page. It is called News-O-Matic. It is absolutely perfect for the classroom and I am still shocked it was free. It is a daily newsfeed for kids. It highlights multiple genres per day from sports to politics. It breaks down news stories into kid friendly language and interesting topics. The stories are obviously true extremely interesting. The app is full of games, contests, ways to write to the publisher, and even past articles. **Edited to announce: There is a subscription fee for your students to be able to use ALL of the features. It is $14.99. So far we have been using the free version, but I think I might upgrade** This week I was excited to pilot my new idea. If you have been reading my blog posts lately, you know how hard my class has been working on their writing skills. For us, school starts at 8:20, but students can come into the room at 7:50. Until then, they sit in the Cafe and read quietly. Instead of giving morning work this week, I gave some students iPads and this work sheet. (You can click on the image to download it for free!) I let students work by themselves, in partners, or in groups to read the current events on the app. They were then responsible to fill out the worksheet together and be ready to report to the class at our morning meeting. This turned out AMAZING for so many reasons! A few students started with iPads, but once others arrived they quickly unpacked and went to join a friend or group. EVERYONE was engaged and actively reading informational text. There were interesting articles for everyone from sports to politics. Kids were actually discussing and coming to a consensus in groups as to what to write down on the paper before sharing it with the class. At share time, if two groups presented the same article, the groups piggybacked off of other group's thoughts ON THEIR OWN. (A major milestone!) The questions that the students came up with on the sheet were amazing! Many of them sent them in to "Russ" on the "Write to Russ" section. As you can clearly tell the students were motivated, eager to learn, and enjoyed reading the news. Who would have thought that the shy little boy that struggles with reading and writing would ask to work alone and present his thoughts to the class on "Working for Peace in Syria??" Turns out he is really interested in promoting peace and what the United States can do to help! I was blown away with his enthusiasm and background knowledge on the topic. When the groups presented to the class we reflected the app on the SmartBoard and everyone learned together. Seriously, it was amazing experience and the kids are already asking if we can continue this new idea next week! Try this out! I guarantee you and your students will learn from this app. This quick activity hits so many standards for CCSS and CCR that I do not feel guilty giving up 10-15 minutes a day for this new learning. Happy Saturday! I am off the grocery store!

People who choose a career in the recreation or leisure fields will spend a large amount of their time in groups. Group Dynamics in Recreation and Leisure: Creating Conscious Groups Through an Experiential Approach builds skills not only in working in group settings but also in creating and facilitating conscious groups. A conscious group is one that recognizes the personal growth of its members as the main group objective. Most people in recreational activities and events are looking to meet people and take part in positive group interaction, providing recreation professionals with a perfect opportunity to develop successful conscious groups. Group Dynamics in Recreation and Leisure introduces group dynamics theory and current research as it applies to recreation and leisure settings. It presents the key concepts and terms, a brief history of the field, and the various theories and models of group development. The text then explains the concept of the conscious group, describes the nature and components of a conscious group, and applies experiential learning theory to working with these groups. Group Dynamics in Recreation and Leisure also moves beyond the theory to show students that their understanding of group dynamics can be a meaningful and realistic tool. They’ll learn to apply the theory to the practical factors and issues involved in leading and working with conscious groups. They’ll explore group goal setting; clarification of objectives and expectations; processes for decision making and problem solving; positive communication; ethics, morals, and values; effective leadership of recreation groups; and the effects of conflict, power, gender, and environment on group functioning. Students will also find a thorough examination of common issues that arise when working with groups, including potential pitfalls and strategies for dealing with or avoiding those pitfalls. They’ll learn about the strengths, weaknesses, and myths of group interaction, including signs of “illness” within groups; working with alternative groups, such as cooperative living groups, as well as involuntary groups and unwilling participants; and capitalizing on diversity and difference. Because those in recreation professions so often work with large groups, crowd dynamics is also discussed. The authors describe how individual and small-group behavior can affect larger groups and also look at mob behavior and riots. Throughout the book, case studies, scenarios, and examples from leisure services, parks, tourism, and experiential education help students better understand and apply the information. These are some other student-friendly features: Toolbox Tips on strategies and techniques for working with groups Learning activities that apply the principles discussed in the text Web sites for further exploration of the ideas in the text Group Dynamics in Recreation and Leisure: Creating Conscious Groups Through an Experiential Approach provides a new view of group dynamics with a unique focus on recreation, leisure, and experiential education settings. Through its concentration on skill development to facilitate productive group work, Group Dynamics in Recreation and Leisure renders the topic of group dynamics as meaningful, realistic, and applicable for both students and practitioners.

Current event and general interest articles are a wonderful resource for students. They can be used for researching a topic, staying informed on what's happening in the news, pleasure reading, and more. In the past I have shared some creative ways to use online articles as part of technology activities for student creativity and reading comprehension. For example: Improve Reading Comprehension with Google Docs "Black Out" - Blog Post Link Black Out Poetry with Google Docs - Blog Post Link Additionally Google recently added a new lesson to their Applied Digital Skills curriculum called "Annotate Text in Google Docs". This activity covers how to take an article, copy and paste it into Google Docs, and then make digital notes to understand the article using comments, highlighting, tables, and more. One big question, however, is where to find good articles. Over the years I have come across many excellent resources for articles that are written specifically for students. See below for my current list of these sites. Student Article Websites Below is a list of useful websites that provide current event and general interest articles for students. Many of these sites provide additional resources such as: Articles written at multiple reading levels (Lexile levels) Quizzes over the article content Discussion questions or writing prompts Options for students to leave comments on the articles Audio versions of the articles All of these sites are free, although some may require you to register to log in, or to provide your students with a code to access the articles. Some of the sites also have paid versions with additional features, but all provide at least access to the articles at no cost. This list is certainly not complete, so please feel free to share your suggestions in the comments below for additional sources for articles that should be added. *This post contains affiliate links. Please see my Disclosure Page for details. God's World News has been publishing age-appropriate magazines for children for over 30 years. Their mission is to provide news and interesting information for children which is biblical, appropriate, and vibrant! Their hope is that every children will grow in their understanding that God has the whole world in His hands. There are six levels to choose from Pre-K through highschool. Each version touches on core subjects to help students develop critical thinking they need to make sound life decisions. Each magazine contains economic, scientific, religious, historical and world event material. It's all current "real world" information, prepared with your family in mind. And best of all the current events are presented to children using a biblical worldview. A moms review: We received a one year subscription to the Early Edition which is geared towards children in grades 1st - 2nd. It was perfect for both of my children who are 6 and 7 years old. I have always encouraged our children to be interested in current events and we try to incorporate various things occurring in the world into our homeschool lessons just about every month. I recently read an article on PBS.org that said, "Students also need an understanding of the world’s economy, politics, social structures and environment in order to make the best decisions about how to live their own lives. More than ever, an appreciation for news and our civic institutions is a key step toward self-empowerment and advancement." I couldn't agree more! Over the last few weeks the children have been choosing articles out of the August, September and October issues to read at breakfast time. Each child would choose one article which I would read. Then we would discuss the article, utilize the many resources provided by God's World News and fill out this journal worksheet that I created. The worksheet was very helpful for reinforcing everything we learned in the article plus it also added handwriting, drawing and additional mapping elements as well. Download your FREE copy here. I created it to go along with the God's World News magazines however it can be used with any current event material (articles from TV, radio, newspaper, internet, etc)! God's World News magazines are filled with all sorts of amazing articles. My children were immediately intrigued as they flipped through the pages, and so was I. There are 24 pages in each Early Edition. The text is nice and large and there are lots of colorful pictures. The articles are short and to the point and each article generally takes less than 5 minutes to read, so there's no need to worry about children becoming bored and distracted. At the bottom of many of the articles are additional teaching tips to assist parents with further discussion about the topic. Sometimes there are even links to websites where you can learn more about the topic and watch videos. Throughout the magazine you will also find Puzzling Times. These are fun puzzles to build critical thinking skills. Puzzles include matching, sequencing, number/letter recognition, mapping and more. My son had a blast with these. On many of the article pages you will also find a Map-It compass which corresponds with the full-sized (20" x 30") world map that is received at the beginning of the year (September). There is also an awesome FREE digital version of the map which you can make direct edits on in a pdf writer program. This worked great on my tablet! The Map-It compass provides children with the city/country coordinates so that they can find the exact location on their locator map. There are also facts about the the city/country as well. Scriptures are mentioned in many of the articles and there are also Bible2Life sections on several articles as well. Bible2Life sections provide parents with a great way to further discuss the articles from a biblical perspective. These magazines offer something for everyone and are a perfect fit for all learning styles! The magazines can actually be used your primary social studies curriculum or used in conjunction with your current curriculum. Gods World News totally has you covered and offers several great resources on their website (some can only be accessed with your membership others are FREE for everyone). There are lessons (which correspond with various articles in the magazines, biographies, explain it, today in history and more. These resources are all fabulous and really helped enhanced our learning. My history loving daughter loved the biographies and today in history! And if that wasn't enough God's World News just finished another great website called kids.wng.org which is where you can go to view the current month magazine digitally! This website is a safe place that allows all of the current month magazine articles as well as the puzzles to be viewed on the go, which is great for busy homeschool families. The articles are broken down into the following categories: MySci (science), Creation (nature), TimeMachine (history), PeopleandPlaces (cultural, etc.), KnowMe (biographies) and FunStuff (spot the difference, mapping etc.). It is a very well done site and very easy to navigate.
