I have used this worksheet as a guide to follow along with major plot points, and science behind an outbreak. With current events and COVID-19 Pandemic, this may be a good teachable movie opportunity. I would recommend for 8th grade and up. Movie Background: The film, Outbreak (1995), portrays the efforts of an army virologist, Sam Daniels, to prevent a global biological disaster. A rare virus from the African jungle has started an epidemic in a small northern California community. The virus has a high mortality rate. The film follows the scientists and army officers as they trace the epidemic and seek to contain it. The story in the film is fictional. Link to make a copy of this file to your Google Drive is included, so you can edit as you see fit. Please also find links to the CDC site for more information and Teaching background, as well as a link to my Kahoot! Review Game that accompanies this resource. This individual student current event research project and guided discussion strategies in the classroom can be adapted for each quarter, term, or semester, as well as to support and explore the themes throughout your curriculum. This choice-based research project, presentation, and interactive discussion strategies come with step-by-step directions. Students will do their own research on a given topic, focused note-taking, write an informative essay using in-text citations, prepare and deliver a class presentation, and, most importantly, lead their peers in a larger, interactive whole-class discussion with higher-order thinking questions they will have developed themselves using the question-and-discussion-techniques provided in this resource. Put students at the center of their own learning and exploration by having them lead the rest of their class in a discussion on current issues and controversies! Each student will: Choose a topic for which they will become the class expert Independently research to find current(within the last two years) and relevant news sources Read at least two current articles (or videos) on the issue of their choosing using critical reading skills Write an informative essay that summarizes and analyzes their findings Prepare and deliver a presentation to their class that presents and explains the key issues as well as reviews the relevant news Develop their own discussion questions Facilitate an interactive whole-group discussion using their unique higher order thinking questions and newly acquired expert knowledge This resource includes all student materials, instructions, rubrics, and student feedback forms you will need to set up and assess this entire unit, plus you can give them this guide for taking outline notes to help them along as they research their assigned topic!
