Top Cat foi criado pela talentosa dupla de cartunistas William Hanna e Joseph Barbera. Juntos, trabalharam como Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Inc. e Hanna-Barbera Enterprises, Inc. arrecadando vários prémios. Quando Hanna e Barbera formaram a empresa, em 1944, eram directores de animação da MGM. Top Cat é um gato amarelo, líder de um bando de gatos vadios e o seu “braço direito” é Benny the Ball. Choo Choo é um gato alto cor-de-rosa que é, por vezes, o segundo na cadeia de comando. Fancy-Fancy é um gato bem-falante que gosta muito de conversar com as “gatinhas”. Esta personagem (e a sua voz) é inspirada em Gary Grant. Spook é parecido com Fancy-Fancy, também um grande conversador e uma personagem um pouco "beatnik". O agente Dribble é um pobre polícia que tem que lidar com Top Cat e o seu gang. A série animada Top Cat foi para o ar pela primeira vez, no Reino Unido, no canal ABC, num total de 30 episódios (de 27 de Setembro de 1961 até 18 de Abril de 1962).
