Pottenstein with its castle in the Franconian Switzerland, Franconia (Bavaria) Some background information: The little town of Pottenstein in the so-called Franconian Switzerland looks back on a long history, as it was already mentioned in a document in 918. In 1323 it received the town privilege and at the same time became a bailiwick of the bishopric Bamberg. During a town fire in 1736 60 houses burned to the ground and also the parish church was heavily damaged. In 1803 as a result of the German Mediatisation Pottenstein passed to Bavaria. Nowadays the town has more than 5,000 residents together with all its 35 incorporated villages, whereas the core city has about 1,500 residents. Due to its scenic location and its approval as a climatic health-resort, it also became a very popular tourist destination. Pottenstein Castle is one of the oldest castles in the Franconian Switzerland. It is located high above the town on a rock between Puettlach and Weihersbach Valley. In 1050 the settlement of Pottenstein was in possession of margrave Otto von Schweinfurt. After his death in 1057 it demised to his daughter Judith, who married count palatine Botho of Carinthia still in the same year. In 1070 Botho, who came from the noble family of the Aribonids, renamed himself Earl of Pottenstein. So it is believed that Pottenstein Castle, which derives its name from Botho (Pottenstein meaning "Stone of Botho"), was built between 1057 and 1070. Its main use was not only to be a home to Botho and his family, but also to protect the area between the rivers Obermain and Pegnitz. It is also believed that Botho sold the the castle to the bishopric Bamberg in 1102. That’s why in the following centuries Pottenstein Castle was looked after by episcopal ministeriales. In 1125, during the battles between king Lothar III and his antiking Conrad III from the Hohenstaufen dynasty, the town of Pottenstein was burned down, but its stronghold couldn’t be taken. From 1227 to 1228 the castle served Saint Elizabeth of Hungary as a residence. In 1525, in the course of the German Peasants’ War, Pottenstein Castle was occupied and plundered by peasants, but again not burned down. In 1553, in the course of the Second Margrave War, it was indeed fired at and damaged by the troops of Albrecht Alcibiades, Margrave of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, but only the castle church was completely destroyed. In 1634, in the course of the Thirty Years War, Protestant Swedish forces failed to raid the castle: To make the garrison lower the castle’s drawbridge a Swedish trumpeter was sent to the castle by the Swedish commander-in-chief and passed off as a delegate of Catholic imperial army. But the commander of the garrison got scent of the Swedish troops who were waiting outside in concealment. So the trumpeter was let in, the drawbridge was again pulled up behind him and the pretended delegate was executed almost immediately, which made the Swedish troops leave without having achieved anything. In 1703, during the War of the Spanish Succession, a garrison was again established in the castle, but since then no acts of war with the castle involved were reported to the present day. In 1918 Pottenstein Castle was bought by the baron von Wintzingerode and nowadays it’s still in possession of his ancestors. It’s open to the public and hosts a museum.
