The Lancia Aurelia was an immediate success following its introduction in 1950. With an elegant design penned by the legendary Vittorio Jano, father of the exalted Alfa Romeo P2 and P3 Grand Prix cars, the B20 GT coupé featured a four-speed rear transaxle and fully independent front and rear suspension, enabling the driver to effectively use the 118 bhp provided by the 2,451-cc V-6 engine. This surprisingly potent car proved an instant race winner, with a 2nd place finish at the storied 1951 Mille Miglia and a class win at Le Mans that same year. Nineteen fifty-two and 1953 saw victories at the treacherous Targo Florio and in the Liège-Rome-Liège rally, respectively. These triumphant performances made certain that the Lancia Aurelia B20 GT coupé would be remembered as a 1950s racing icon and, consequently, is very desirable today.

Enrico Nardi’s shop known as Nardi & C. S.a.S. was based in Turin and spent a great deal of time supporting the aftermarket industry. While Nardi made parts for a whole variety of manufacturers including Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Simca, their relationship with Lancia was special. The Blue Ray (translates to Raggio Azzura) shows cars built by Lancia were given their designation after their two-tone paint scheme. The Lancia Aurelia Blue Ray I was completed in September of 1955 with the second, Blue Ray II, finished in 1958. Both Blue Ray cars were the creation of Turin-based Enrico Nardi. They were built atop a Lancia Aurelia chassis and given upgrades by Nardi. The designs were penned by Giovanni Michelotti. Under the bonnet is a Lancia Aurelia B20 engine that displaces 2.5-ltiers and produces 190 horsepower. Top speed is in the neighborhood of 140 mph. Upgrades to the engine include a cast alloy Nardi air scoop, intake manifold with double throat Weber 40DCZs carburetors, alloy radiator header, and modified camshaft, pistons, and exhaust manifolds. There is a Nardi floor-mounted gear change and a Aurelia B20 transaxle. Blue Ray I was designed by Michelotti and constricted by Vignale. The roof is of blue Perspex™ and features an air-scoop with internal directional vents. The side and rear windows are also formed from blue Perspex. Comprehensive report on the 2010 RM Auctions London auction from Rick Carey. Detailed report, analysis and car profiles from the RM Auctions London sale.
Chassis number '2848' is a desirable and rare 3rd Series Aurelia B20 GT. The 3rd Series B20 is considered by many to be the best, combining as it does much of the part-alloy panelling of the earlier lightweight cars, plus their independent rear suspension, but with the much improved and more powerful 2.5-litre engine of the later series. Most importantly for an Aurelia, the chassis, engine, sliding pillar suspension, transaxle, and steering box are all matching numbers and just as they left the factory.
“An unlikely outlaw,” is how Carfection’s Henry Catchpole describes this ravishingly protuberant Italian coupe. Indeed, you don’t see too many Lancia Aurelias lowered and chopped in the “outlaw” style. This car is unique, and seems to have multiple layers of coolness.
