Job is a hard book of the Bible to teach kids, but it's necccessary. In this Job lesson for kids, we look at what to do when your friends have a hard time.
The Trinity is a difficult concept to even begin to grasp, yet Bible object lessons for teaching the Trinity to children can help any age better understand what the Bible teaches about God.
VERSES: Joel 1:1-3:21 MEMORY VERSE: Joel 2:13 "...rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD you God..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Hebrews. Write "Hebrews" on small slips of paper and hand out at the end of Bible class, so the students may take it home to memorize. PRAYER: Thank God for the wonderful food that He gives us. Thank Him for being a good, kind, and merciful God that loves us so very much. SPECIAL SONG: Jesus Loves Me (see February - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #2 on this blog) VISUAL AID: Large Activity (see below) LESSON POINTS: What do we know about Joel? Joel, like Hosea, was one of the minor prophets, which meant that he only wrote a little bit compared to other prophets, writing only three chapters in his book. We do not know much about Joel as a person, only what he wrote. His name means "Jehovah Is God." Sometimes Joel is called the "Prophet of Pentecost" because some his prophecies (Joel 2:28-32) were fulfilled in the book of Acts in the New Testament on the day of Pentecost. (Acts 2:16-47). He pleaded with the people to repent from their wickedness and return to God, like all of the prophets did before him and after him. What made Joel a little different than some of the other prophets is that, during, his warnings and pleadings with the people, there was a great pestilence. A 'pestilence' is like a plague. Remember our lessons on the Plagues of Egypt (see the lessons in April and May on the Plagues 1-10 on this blog)? A pestilence was a tremendous amount of insects that would infect the land and do much damage to the crops, so there would be a famine or no food to eat. Here, in Joel's time, the beginning of the pestilence that ravaged the land were thousands and thousands of locusts. They ate and ate and eventually they went away. Then when the locusts had eaten all they could, there was still a little bit of stalks on the plants; not much, but there was a little bit left. Next, the palmerworms , which was a type of caterpillar, came after the locusts and ate all they could, but there was little bit left. After the palmerworms, the cankerworms, which were certain types of moths and their larvae, came and ate a little bit more. And, finally, the caterpillars came and ate what the cankerworms left. Then...there was no food at all for the people. There were no grapes, no figs, no corn, no oil, no wheat, no barley, no pomegranates, no fruit of the palm trees, no apples, no seeds, no food at all for the animals or the people. The people suffered. Joel said that the reason for their suffering and the pestilence was because God wanted the people to be sorry for the wrongs that they had been doing, and to weep, fast, mourn, and tear their hearts, not their clothes, and to turn to Him again. Joel said that God was good, gracious and kind, that He was slow to get angry and was merciful to those who returned to Him. Joel pleaded with the people to do good, but they would not listen. God was ready to give the people all the things back if they would only return to Him, but they would not repent or be sorry for their wicked deeds, "Older Student" Tips: The book of Joel is written in two main parts. The first part is Joel speaking (Joel 1:1-2:17) and the second part is God speaking (Joel 2:18-3:21). ACTIVITY: What Happened In The Book Of JOEL Materials needed: 9" x 12" light blue construction paper, five pieces of white bond paper, crayons, marker, stapler, staples, scissors. Because there is a lot of writing with pictures, it might a good idea for the Bible teacher to cut both the blue and the white papers in half, lengthwise. Or, the books could even be stapled together in advance. See what is best for your size of class. Hand out two pieces of 4.5" light blue paper. Hand out ten pieces of 4.25" x 11" white paper. Place the ten white papers inside the two blue papers. Line papers up on one side. Staple on the left side of the papers. NUMBER THE WHITE PAGES ONLY ON THE RIGHT SIDE. FRONT COVER: Write "What Happened In The Book Of JOEL.'. INSIDE BLUE COVER: Draw Joel preaching. Write the word REPENT in a speech bubble. PAGE 1: Write "Joel was a prophet of God." PAGE 2: Write "Because the people turned away from God, bad things happened." Write the word, "away" in red. BACK OF PAGE 2: Blank. PAGE 3: Draw a healthy looking green plant with a few locusts eating the leaves. Idea: The Students can trace their thumbs for the bodies of the locusts, adding eyes, wings, and legs. BACK OF PAGE 3: Blank. PAGE 4: Write: "But there was a little bit left." BACK OF PAGE 4: Write "Next, the palmerworms came and ate all they could." PAGE 5: Draw an unhealthy looking greenish plant with brown wiggles for palmerworms on the plant. BACK OF PAGE 5: Blank. PAGE 6: Write "But there was a little bit left." BACK OF PAGE 6: Write "Then the cankerworms came and ate all they could." PAGE 7: Draw a stem of a plant with brown circles with a line through the, (like the "NO" sign) and brown lines for the cankerworms and larvae. The cankerworm is supposed to look like a small moth. BACK OF PAGE 7: Blank. PAGE 8: Write "But there was a little bit left." BACK OF PAGE 8: Write "Finally, the caterpillars came and ate all they could." PAGE 9: Draw a picture of hardly any green stem at all with orange caterpillars on it. BACK OF PAGE 9: Blank. PAGE 10: Write "There was nothing left." BACK OF PAGE 10: Write "No grapes. No figs. Bible ABC's: Y is for Youngest Jacob (& Esau) These lessons can be used without the alphabet theme. Consider these an update with new ideas and printables! So... I kinda went rogue and as I was writing the lesson! I couldn't stop because it seemed like chapters 25-28 all flow together. Each section is short, but is usually divided... especially for younger students. Although this contains the stew trade, the blessing switch and Jacob's ladder dream, they can be divided by chapter. Or, taught as one lesson. The Fact Wheel briefly reviews their birth, the stew trade and the birthright event. Color and black & white are included. These can be used for Jacob and any other appropriate lesson and were kept plain intentionally for this purpose. These are a reminder that God is there for us. Students can color or paint the designs on the banner, door hanger and bookmark. Stickers can be added. String or ribbon can be added to the banner to hang and on the bookmark. A Word Search for chapters 25-28 is included. A stew maze, dot-to-dot and a puzzle are included. The puzzle has been updated with the stew food and standups. Click here to download this file with these updates only. The first is a Reader Worksheet and is divided into the three sections by chapter. This can be used as one worksheet, or review, or if you are dividing the lesson, each section can be used as needed. The wording from the scripture is as easy to read as possible with sight words while keeping to the key points with easy to answer questions. The second is a fill-in-the-blank worksheet. This is sectioned by the number. Black & white only. I designed the Trip Strip to be a cut & glue timeline. This one shown has lines for the students to write about each event. Or, they can write the scriptures. There is another worksheet without the writing space. These can easily be used for mixed age groups. Cut and glue according to directions. This is not included in the application pack. Click here to download part 1 Genesis 25 'The Stew'. Click here to download part 2 Genesis 27 'The Birthright'. Click here to download part 3 Genesis 28 'Jacob's Ladder'. These Event Cards can be used as smaller visuals and they can be shuffled for the student to re-tell the events and lay them in order. The same full-page size visuals and pictures-to-color can be downloaded below. There are alphabet mazes and worksheets included. These are half-sheets and can be used in Interactive Notebooks. Click here to see a free video on how to make and use Interactive Notebooks. There is a set of 5 and 10 piece puzzles. I added this Flip Book because the students love them, and the foldable book below does not include Jacob's dream in chapter 28. It includes the color and black & white. Click here to download the lesson and application pack. There is a one-page foldable book in color and black and white. This does not include Jacob's ladder dream. These pages can also be cut apart and used as flash cards to put the events in order. Click here to download. Click here to download the updated visuals. This file contains visuals for Genesis 25-27. All are not shown. (These are not included in the application pack.) Click here to download the pictures to color. (These are the same as the visuals but are black & white.) This week we are moving forward with our lessons about King Hezekiah. The KIDDOS will be learning about King Hezekiah's life being extended. The story comes from 2 Kings 20 and Isaiah 38. I LOVE seeing our WALL of INFORMATION GROWING!!!! It make is so easy to REVIEW PAST lessons!!! I am excited about teaching this lesson. The KIDDOS will get to learn all about the Miracle that occurred with a SUNDIAL. This is such an exciting lesson. This is our "GOD'S AWESOME PLAN FOR MAN" CARD. We have two new words to add to our "WORD WALL." I want to make sure the KIDDOS understand what a BOIL and SUNDIAL have to do with this story. The KIDDOS will have a new MEMORY VERSE this week. I feel like this is a good MEMORY VERSE for this LESSON. PRAYER changes EVERYTHING!!! I want the KIDDOS to understand the BLESSING of PRAYER!!! If you would like to hear the TUNE to our NEWEST MEMORY VERSE please click the link. It will route you to the FACEBOOK page for Hands On Bible Teacher. Psalm 55:17, Memory Verse Song . We will be singing the ENTIRE SONG this week! I am excited to teach the SECOND VERSE!! YAY! If you would like to hear how this song goes please click on the link. It will route you to the FACEBOOK page for Hands On Bible Teacher. Hezekiah Was A Good and Righteous King Song. The KIDDOS TAKE HOME PROJECT is a "SUN DIAL" The sundial is made from inexpensive paper plates, scrap cardstock paper, and little printed paper suns. The KIDDOS will get to use MARKERS to color their Sundial. Then the KIDDOS will attach the "ARROW" part of the Sundial. Then the KIDDOS will glue on the little paper suns. I think they turned out really cute.....I hope the KIDDOS enjoy making them. Our REVIEW game this week is called "Shadows, Shadows Everywhere" matching game. The KIDDOS will answer a question from the lesson and then have the opportunity to turn over a set of cards and attempt to find the "SHADOW" match for the "REAL" picture they turned over. I purposefully left a SPACE between the REAL and the SHADOW...that way it will be a bit easier for the KIDDOS to know to pick one card from one side and one from the other side. Next week the KIDDOS will make this and add it to their EXPLORER JOURNAL. After coloring King Hezekiah, sick in his bed they will add a 3D crown and color and add the Sundial. I am LOVING the progress the KIDDOS are making. They seem to recalling PAST lessons and enjoying the current lessons. It is truly a blessing teaching the KIDDOS!!! Blessings, Ronda

This week's lesson is Jacob's Ladder. There are printables to make your own tri-fold visual and a mini book for Jacob's dream. We also discussed Jacob working for his Uncle Laban and marrying Leah, then Rachel. Next week's lesson will have several choices to print Jacob's family and who his children connect to. Review: Last we talked about Isaac and Rebekah. After 20 years of being married, they finally had twins. The oldest was Esau and the youngest was Jacob. Esau was hairy and liked to hunt. Jacob liked to stay in the tent. Rebekah loved him the most, and Isaac loved Esau the best. When Isaac was old, he decided to give the birthright to his oldest son Esau. When Rebekah overheard this, she told Jacob to pretend to be his brother. Rebekah cooked the food, covered Jacob’s hands and neck with goat fur and Jacob went in to see his dad. Well, Isaac gave the blessing to Jacob and when Esau went in to see Isaac and was told that his brother had already gotten the blessing, Esau was so angry, he wanted to kill Jacob! Today's lesson is found in Genesis 28:11-29:27. Isaac and Rebekah decided to send Jacob to her brother’s house to find a wife who believed in God. They didn’t want him to marry someone that worshipped idols. Rebekah also wanted Jacob to get away from his brother. Jacob traveled and when the sun had gone down, he stopped for the night. And Jacob took a stone and put it under his head for a pillow. And that’s where he laid down to sleep. Jacob began to have a dream. There was a ladder on the earth, and it reached up into heaven. The angels of God were going up and down the ladder. God stood above the ladder and told Jacob that He is the God of Abraham and of Isaac. This place you are sleeping will be given to you and your descendants. You will have descendants spread all around the earth and I will bless your family. God told Jacob He would always be with him and protect him. God told Jacob that his descendants will be like the dust of the earth... that's a lot of descendants! (Genesis 28:14) Remember, God had told Abraham his descendants will be like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. When Jacob woke up early the next morning, he said surely God is in this place and I didn’t even know it! Jacob took the stone that he had used for a pillow and stood it up like a pillar. He poured oil on the top of it. Jacob called the place Bethel which means ‘House of God’. It had been called Luz before. His grandfather Abraham had been in that same place 160 years before. Jacob continued on his journey. He came to Haran where his Uncle Laban lived. Jacob was at a well and asked the other men there if they knew Laban. They said “Yes, we do and there is his daughter Rachel coming with the sheep.” They rolled the stone away from the well so the sheep could drink. Jacob told Rachel who he was, and she went to tell her father. Laban came running to meet him. Jacob stayed with them for a month. When Laban asked Jacob what he wanted for working the past month, he said he would stay and work for 7 years if he could marry Rachel. Leah was the older sister, but he fell in love with the beautiful, younger Rachel. (Read Genesis 29:18-20) They agreed to this, and Jacob loved her so much, it didn’t seem like 7 years! When the 7 years of working were over, Jacob asked Laban to be allowed to marry Rachel. Laban had a feast for the wedding but sent Leah into Jacob instead. Remember, they wore veils and wore a lot of clothes then. In the morning when Jacob saw that it was not Rachel, he asked Laban: “Why have you done this?” Laban told Jacob that the oldest daughter needed to be married first. That was the custom of the country. Jacob stayed with Leah for a week, and then he had to work another 7 years to marry Rachel! Oh, he was not happy. He was tricked! Almost liked he had tricked his brother Esau! Yes, Jacob had 2 wives, but God allowed that back then so people could populate the earth. God didn’t like it, but He put up with it. The New Testament says to be faithful to one wife. Next week, we will study more about Jacob and his family and his 12 sons! For my visual today, I used a Tri-Fold Science Board for the background. I painted the stars and grass. I used Balsa wood sticks (1/8 x 1/2 36") to make the ladder. Then I used the angel patterns in the download to cut the angels from black cardstock. I used felt for the grass and my David doll. I added stones and 'brown felt blanket'. The stone for Jacob's pillow is a longer one with a flat bottom that I stood up to show Jacob turning it into a pillar and anointing it. Keep in mind, you can use the printables on a bulletin board, or it would look great on a door! You can print most of what you need here.
