Hi There! Last week I posted on Facebook about how my team's hallway needed a spring make-over. We were stuck in winter mode and the dark blue butcher paper was starting to depress me. I needed color! I needed funshine... yes... I said FUNSHINE!! This week, I had planned a lesson on self-esteem for my 4th graders. Part of our curriculum is to teach students about tobacco and alcohol resistance. I always start this conversation with lessons on self-esteem and friendships. I started the lesson with a quick powerpoint with two pictures: one of a child frowning and looking down, the other of a child smiling and looking confident. I had the students brainstorm words to describe each of the kids. Then I introduced them to the term self-esteem. We then went to kids health.org and read the article "The Story of Self-Esteem". I use kids health.org a lot. It has great articles written so that kids can understand the concepts. The website even has a read-aloud feature. My students LOVE it because it is a computer voice that often pronounces words incorrectly and they think that is hilarious! After we added our notes to our health notebooks, I introduced the "Garden of Greatness" craft. I had each student brainstorm a list of things that he or she is good at, things that made them feel important, or things that made them feel unique and special. I passed out strips of bright colored paper and circles pre-labeled with their names. Students glued between 4 and 8 of the strips onto the back of the circle. When that was done, they turned over the flowers to the front side and wrote ideas off of their list onto the strips of paper. To finish the project, I collected the flowers and stapled them onto the bulletin board. As I stapled, I wrapped each petal to the back. The finish product turned out great! Continuing my series on crafts related to the Creed... (for the rest, check out the "I Believe" activities under the Sharing the Faith tab above) Highlighting the Four Marks of the Church found at the end of the Nicene Creed, I made this craft as a vehicle for dicussing how the Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Here are some topics I would teach as I made this with kids: -One= Christ founded one Church. It was never his plan for us to break into smaller groups with differing beliefs. When He comes again, we will all be united as one. -Holy= The Church is the spotless Bride of Christ, good and holy, even though it is made up of broken and fallen people. When He comes again, the Church will enter Heaven as His Holy Bride. -Catholic= The Church is universal. Our faith is for all people of all cultures of all times. When He comes again, we will see how all encompassing the Church really is. -Apostolic= The Church is founded on the teachings of the Apostles, and continues to follow their authority today through their successors the Bishops. We are blessed to have leadership in our time by those given authority from Christ. -The Church is not a building, but is the people. We are the Church, and we make up the Body of Christ. -We believe all of these things as we say the Nicene Creed- "I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church." So, for the craft, you will need a copy of the printable (link at the bottom of the post) and one piece of black construction paper for each kid, as well as various colored scraps of paper, glue, scissors, and a circle punch if you have one. First mission: color the pieces on the printable. I chose to leave the church and "Our Church Is..." white to represent it being the spotless Bride of Christ. Then cut them out. Second mission: cut open the doors on the solid lines and fold on the dotted lines. A little trick for kids having trouble-fold the church in half length ways and clip on the line. Then open it back up and cut the rest. Here is what it looks like after that step- Third mission: lay the church in the center of the black paper and trace the opening with a white crayon. (I love finding a purpose for the neglected white crayon in my Crayola box :) ) Fourth mission: Cut or punch out circle of various colors. This is step you could do ahead of time to speed things up if you are crafting with a large group. Glue the circles inside the white rectangle. Glue the church on over the circles without gluing down the doors. Then glue on the rest of the words like this: Fifth mission: glue the "We are the Church!" and the Ephesians verse on the inside of the doors. This is to remind the kids that we, all of the people of God, are the Church, and we are one body. Sixth mission: Go share it with somebody! Here is the link to the printable:

This is a project I do at Easter time with the students. These are done by Grade 1. I also did this with Grade 4 this year using smaller beads and more complicated patterns. Click on picture to see larger. You need to do up a recipe of salt dough clay. ( 1 recipe is enough for 24 crosses using a 3 1/2 inch cutter) 4 cups flour 1 cup salt 2 cups to 2 and 1/2 cups warm water (varies depending on flour and humidity, enough for a soft dough) Knead into a soft dough Store in a ziploc bag. If not using right away you can store in the refrigerator for like forever. Just pull it out ahead of time to come to room tempertaure before using. I like to color the dough. Using liquid tempera or acrylic paint squirt some on the dough. Fold over the dough. and then knead like crazy....don't worry if it looks marbled like this it just means you have to keep kneading. It will eventually look like this. Even color throughout. Roll it out and then using a cookie cutter cut out the shape. Place a paper clip 1/2 way in at the top for hanging. I get the kids to put a bit of water on the surface of the cross using their finger and then they can start forming their design with beads. We use pony beads in different sizes as well as wood beads and large decorative beads. I asked them to try and make a pattern using color or shape. They need to push the beads in fairly firmly. I then place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. I write the name of the student on the paper in sharpie and then place their creation either on top or next to their name. This allows me to keep them straight until they are baked when I can then write their names on the back in sharpie. Bake in a 250 - 300 degree oven for about 2 - 3 hours until hard. You don't want to overbake and have them get a brownish tinge. When cool add a coat or 2 of Mod podge. This will help "glue" into place any loose beads as well as add a nice shiny finish. Keep in mind that salt dough responds to the humidity in the air. It can sometimes feel soft even after baking and sealing. Just let it be and it will dry out again. That's it. I add a ribbon thru the paper clip at the top and the kids have a great creation to take home for Easter. See you next time.

Here is the last church craft I made for this session of Kids Quest. It was pretty easy to do. It's a wheel that you can turn, reminding you that you can pray anytime: I really enjoy preparing the crafts for the children's ministry each week; even more so now that my daughter is involved in the class. It makes me feel like I'm helping out, even if it seems like a small contribution, I know that any help that teachers can get to be more prepared is a big deal. In my small way I am helping impact the next generation. I also spent some time this week reviewing some ideas for art projects I'd like to work on. I picked out a few and hope to start posting my progress soon.
