Senza Einstein, non avremmo il GPS. E niente WiFi, se Stephen Hawking non avesse scoperto i buchi neri. «La ricerca spaziale rivoluziona la vita di tutti i giorni», dice il cosmologo Roberto Trotta che abbiamo incontrato al Web Summit di Lisbona. «Ma potrà anche un giorno dare una risposta alla Grande Domanda: perché esistiamo?» Roberto Trotta è diventato famoso un libro (The Edge of the Sky, Basic Books).che racconta come funziona l’universo usando le mille parole più comuni della lingua inglese, e ha un personaggio che sembra uscito da Harry Potter (The-All-There-Is, cioè “il-tutto-intorno-a-noi”). E, proprio grazie alla chiarezza del volumetto, la rivista americana Foreign Policy ha inserito il 41enne cosmologo teoretico ticinese, che insegna all’Imperial College di Londra, tra i cento Global Thinkers che cambieranno il mondo. Eppure mentre parliamo con Roberto Trotta al Web Summit di Lisbona (di materia oscura, multiverso, monete che cadono misteriosamente tutte con la faccia all’insù) ogni tanto perdiamo il filo. Che vergogna. Putroppo le lezioni di fisica sono, per chi scrive, non un ricordo da rinfrescare. ma un incubo da dimenticare. «No, no, la colpa è mia», dice lui. Clemente. Come mai è così difficile per gli scienziati spiegare quello che sanno? «Perché devono considerare irrilevante il dettaglio. Che è l’opposto di quello che devono fare quando lavorano. Per essere comprensibili bisogna fornire uno sguardo a volo d’uccello e poi riportarlo a terra, chiarendo perché quello che sembra lontano e irrilevante non lo è». Mi illumini, la prego. Mi sono sempre chiesta che senso avesse calcolare la differenza di età tra un gemello nello spazio e l’altro sulla terra. «Il senso è capire che il tempo non è assoluto e il suo scorrere dipende dal sistema di riferimento con cui lo si misura. È una teoria – quella della relatività di Albert Einstein – che lei sfrutta ogni giorno senza saperlo. Stamattina, per esempio, ha probabilmente usato il navigatore satellitare per venire al nostro appuntamento. Senza Einstein sarebbe arrivata a 10 km di distanza. Perché il tempo, dove volano i satelliti, scorre in modo diverso rispetto a qui. E gli smartphone usano un algoritmo basato sulla teoria della relatività di Einstein per tenere conto dello scarto. Per questo ci portano a destinazione». Senza Einstein niente GPS, dunque? «Esattamente. Anche se Einstein non si sarebbe mai immaginato un’applicazione del genere. La storia della scienza è piena di scoperte all’aspetto puramente teoriche ma che poi portano – decenni più tardi – a innovazioni che rivoluzionano la vita di tutti i giorni». Mi faccia un altro esempio. «Non potremmo usare il wi-fi se Stephen Hawking non avesse predetto, nel 1974, che i buchi neri evaporano nel tempo». Roberto Trotta Che c’entra il wi-fi con i buchi neri? «Negli anni ’90 John O’Sullivan, un ingegnere australiano, ha sviluppato un algoritmo che eliminava le interferenze radio.mentre cercava un modo per “ripulire” i dati dei telescopi usati per individuare il segnale predetto da Hawking sulle esplosioni dei buchi neri. Senza questo algoritmo, non potremmo usare il wi-fi. E senza disturbare Hawking, anch’io, nel mio piccolo, sto applicando l’astrostatistica a problemi più terra-terra». In che modo? «Con la startup Utonomy, uso metodi che ho inventato per l’analisi di potenti esplosioni stellari (le Supernove) per predire le fluttuazioni nella richiesta di gas metano. Per chi lo distribuisce, adattare l’erogazione significa ridurre la pressione sulle tubature.e di conseguenza le fughe, che costano 200 miliardi l’anno nella sola Inghilterra. Senza contare l’effetto serra. Uso anche i metodi statistici che scoprono eventi anomali nell’universo per analizzare i dati sulle carte di credito. Così è possibile individuare le transazioni sospette». Roberto Trotta Ci ha convinti. Ma perché è così importante per gli scienziati coinvolgere un pubblico allargato? «Perché la ricerca spaziale è spesso accusata di irrilevanza. Soprattutto quando ci sono tematiche pressanti e complesse, come il Climate Change o la perdita di ecosistemi, che finalmente sono diventate di pubblico dominio. Perché dovremmo spendere risorse ed energie sullo spazio? Perché i giovani matematici dovrebbero perdere tempo con l’astrofisica, quando possono diventare ricchi usando la statistica nella finanza? La risposta a queste domande la devono dare gli scienziati. E una di quelle possibili è spiegare, come abbiamo fatto ora, che questa ricerca si è sempre rivelata fondamentale per migliorare la vita sulla terra». Se questa è una delle risposte possibili, quali sono le altre? «Quelle meno pragmatiche ma più affascinanti. Chi studia l’universo lo fa perché comprenderne la natura ci farà capire qual è il nostro posto nel cosmo. Ed è grazie a queste ricerche che un giorno, ne sono certo, capiremo perché siamo qui». Quindi saremo in grado di spiegare il senso della vita? «Fondamentalmente sì. In quanto fisici, la domanda che ci poniamo come punto di partenza è: com’è possibile che le leggi dell’universo siano tali da permettere l’evoluzione di entità biologiche come la nostra?». E la risposta? «Quella che sta prendendo sempre più piede, ora che siamo in grado di analizzare un numero enorme di dati che vengono dall’universo, è probabilistica. E detta anche del multiverso. Cioè che l’universo non sia unico ma una collezione di sfere, sotto-universi che funzionano ognuno secondo leggi differenti. E che questi siano così tanti da fare sì che, in base al calcolo delle probabilità, uno presenti esattamente le leggi fisiche che servono per la vita». Roberto Trotta L’universo sarebbe cioè uno dei mille possibili ma anche l’unico in grado di farci vivere? «Se dice mille per indicare un numero molto più grande, sì. Ma per farle capire di che cosa stiamo parlando le chiedo di immaginare di entrare in una stanza e trovare 400 monete su un tavolo, tutte con la “testa” in su. Penserebbe mai che siano state lanciate a caso? Ovviamente no. Le probabilità sarebbero infinitesime. Ma le stesse che ha il nostro universo di avere parametri fisici come quelli che possiede. Viviamo quindi in un universo molto improbabile. E per spiegarlo abbiamo due vie. O poniamo che qualcuno – Dio – abbia messo tutte le monete a faccia in su sul tavolo seguendo un design precostituito. Oppure accettiamo l’alternativa probabilistica: un numero di stanze così enorme, che in ognuna di queste le monete siano state gettate in aria. Prima o poi ne troverai una con le 400 monete tutte rivolte nella stessa direzione». A questo punto mi gira la testa. «È normalissimo. Perché è stato calcolato che il multiverso contenga 10 alla 500 sfere. Cioè un numero di sfere pari a 10 seguito da 500 zeri, un numero inimmaginabile. Ma è quello che ci serve per poter garantire che almeno uno abbia le condizioni giuste per la vita». Ma non è quella della scienza, che invece ne dà una di natura probabilistica. La risposta è comunque aperta perché anche la spiegazione scientifica non è provata. Per ora». Roberto Trotta Come si studia qualcosa di cui si ipotizza solo l’esistenza? «A piccoli passi. Io e il mio team lavoriamo su materia ed energia oscure che rappresentano il 96% del cosmo. Capire di cosa siano fatte e come funzionino ci aiuterà a capire il destino dell’universo. Sappiamo, infatti, che ha iniziato a espandersi dal Big Bang (30,7 miliardi di anni fa). Fino a non molto tempo fa si pensava che l’espansione fosse in fase di rallentamento, con l’energia sprigionata dal Big Bang che si esauriva per effetto della forza di gravità. Invece è stato provato (dal team di Adam Riess, Nobel per la fisica 2011) che l’espansione sta accelerando. Le ipotesi su perché questo avvenga sono diverse, ma vertono sul ruolo della materia e dell’energia oscura. Sarebbe l’energia oscura che, vittoriosa sulla forza di gravità, sta portando le galassie ad allontanarsi. La domanda allora è: l’universo continuerà a espandersi? E se fosse così, finirà per “strapparsi”? Oppure la forza gravitazionale prenderà il sopravvento sull’energia oscura e l’universo si raccoglierà su se stesso in un Big Bang alla rovescia, il cosiddetto Big Crunch? Grazie all’astrostatistica possiamo fare ipotesi più informate sul futuro dell’universo, sul multiverso. ma anche sulla natura fondamentale della materia di cui siamo fatti». Roberto Trotta La matematica si usa da sempre nella fisica. Che cosa è cambiato oggi? «La scala: abbiamo dati più complessi che richiedono manipolazioni matematiche più articolate. Lo studio dell’universo non si fa guardando in un telescopio ma scrivendo programmi che manipolano, interpretano e analizzano dati che nessun umano potrebbe mai comprendere a occhio nudo. È grazie all’astrostatistica che oggi siamo in grado di “visualizzare” la luce dopo il Big Bang, le esplosioni delle stelle più lontane (le Supernove) e la dissoluzione delle galassie. E di simulare la distribuzione della materia oscura nell’universo». Torniamo sulla terra. Ha già convinto i suoi figli a studiare lo spazio? «Emma ha 8 anni e vuole fare l’astronauta. Ben ne ha 3: è spericolato e adora le storie. Sono sulla buona strada». Roberto Trotta Forse la aiuteranno a realizzare i sogni di scienziato. Qual è il più grande? «Quello di tutti quelli come me. Trovare la teoria del tutto. L’equazione che spiega la natura del cosmo. La stamperei subito su una maglietta, perché nessuno dica più che la scienza non è pop». La forza vivente o coscienza collega tutto ciò che esiste e colpisce tutti noi e alcuni di noi possono manipolare la forza e altri individui così come gli oggetti. La forza è consapevole dei cambiamenti del cosmo e si sforza di equilibrare come se fosse viva e pensante. Tutto nell'universo è cosciente. La coscienza è una parte fondamentale della materia.

Chè a sperticarsi in cielo come stella non conviene, genera quel caos di vertigine sul nulla. Signora Perfezione, sono spiacente: l' utente da lei chiamato risulta inesistente. Il giorno ed il mondo perfetto non esiste, perciò non aspettare, potresti ritrovarti con il nulla ad invecchiare. Non crearti alibi a cui credi e poi ti appoggi, il giorno perfetto è quello che vivi oggi. Ed il tempo reca in sé una benedizione se sai abbandonarti al flusso delle cose.
